A summary of things you should know about Anticipate according to Rob-Jan De Jong:

Introduction

In this episode Rob-Jan De Jong reveals all his insights on his book, Anticipate, where he discusses the 2 skills that are key to mastering the art of leading others.

In his book De Jong provides a guide with practical techniques and inspirational stories that are designed to show you how to expand your visionary capacity when it comes to leadership. The goal of the book is to help you see things more clearly, rejuvenate your imagination, and manage from a birds-eye view in order to develop a strategic advantage on your competitors.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who are managing the operations of a business and need help realigning their management strategy to predict the future of an organization.

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:58)

My book not only tells you how important having a vision is in a leadership role but more important I explain how you go about developing that vision.

The Best Way To Engage (5:47)

You can read the book straight through or jump in and out where needed.

The Reader’s Takeaway (15:25)

The core takeaway is that vision is not something you are born with, it’s something you can develop.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (7:06)

The book is broken down into four areas.

The first area is your visionary content – how you go about trading ideas.

The second area is your visionary development – how you go about growing that capacity. Here I propose a developmental framework that really consists of two different dimensions, one is your ability to see things early and the other is how to in a responsible way put that together in a big picture story. I talk about the importance of envisioning multiple futures as you’re developing your big picture through techniques such as scenario planning.

The third area is about yourself and the productive behaviors that you must master in order to make this work. So there are things that you need to reflect on in terms of what builds my capability of doing this from a behavioral and mindset point of view. As you are reflecting on yourself it is equally very important to understand what it is that you stand for as a leader and the things that you truly believe in.

We bring it all together in the fourth area of the book and look at what it requires in order to make your vision fly as you communicate about it. In order for a vision to become powerful you have got to look at three different dimensions which you will find in the book.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 07:06

Notable Quotes From The Book (16:52)

“Everything is the same until it is not.” – Ellen Langer

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:35)

I am the father of twin 10 year old boys to whom I am also their soccer coach so I do a lot of work with leadership and put it to practice with 10 year olds. Professionally I work a lot with leadership teams and trying to get them to engage with their strategic agenda. The second thing I do is teach about this subject and I am involved in various executive education programs.

My inspiration comes from about seven or eight years ago while I was doing a lot of work in the field of leadership and at some point I asked the audience what’s the one word you find in the definition of leadership. Immediately they fired back the word vision. From there I asked all these leaders what their vision was and nobody could raise their hand and tell me because they didn’t have one. I didn’t understand how it could be that something we all know is important to have as a leader but yet we don’t have one. That fascinated me and was what inspired me to look into this subject and I wanted to share my discoveries of what I found over the eight years.

A summary of things you should know about Body of Work according to Pamela Slim

Introduction

In this episode Pamela Slim shares her book, Body of Work, where she gives you the tools to tie your story together in order to have a meaningful career.

In her book, Slim teaches you how to find the right connections for your accomplishments, sell your story, and continually reinvent and re-launch your personal brand. The goal of this book is to guide you through today’s complex career landscape to better understand the importance of the work you do.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who are struggling to understand their true passion while working multiple jobs and need a way to find fulfillment, joy, and inner peace.

The Book’s Unique Quality (5:09)

On one hand it really is a different way of looking at work. I am the kind of coach were I feel fiercely passionate about not being totally prescriptive. I feel so strongly that people need to be designing a life and work situation that fits for them and their particular situation. I think it’s easy to be prescriptive sometimes and tell people what to do and I didn’t want to do that with this book and it’s what sets it apart.

The Best Way To Engage (6:30)

I wrote it to have real stories of real people who are demonstrating the key skills that I talk about. I wanted to make it interesting to read, engaging and conceptually understandable which is why a lot of people tend to read it all the way through first to understand how the pieces fit together. It is a way of looking at the world of work that may not make too much sense if you jump in in the middle of it.

The Reader’s Takeaway (19:56)

The heart of the book for me is to create and innovate. When we are able to clearly define what it is that we want to create that is the skill that will be the most important for you as an entrepreneur. It’s also very important to share your story.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (8:06)

The first chapter lays out the overall concept of Body of Work. My premise is that our body of work is everything that we create, contribute, affect and impact throughout the course of our lives.

Then we begin to dive in piece by piece at what you can examine in order to build the body of what is going to be personally meaningful and significant and also have a good impact in the world. The piece of that is defining your roots which are identifying your values, beliefs and the problems that you want to solve. We go through a process of the things that are going to drive your work forward.

The second piece is name your ingredients and this is where you go in to understanding specifically your skills, strengths and experiences.

From there we go in and explore different work modes.

That moves us in to create and innovate which is to me the heart and body of work. I think that we realize our potential and contribute the most when we are creating specific projects.

The next section is what I call Surf the Fear. If there is one thing I know over working 20 years with people around their work lives is that any kind of change and transition involves fear, doubt and uncertainty. I do not believe that we need to ignore or crush fear but rather learn to harness positive components of fear.

The next chapter is on collaborating and this is a skill that is so useful and important. It covers everything from collaborating with our market and it’s also about being very specific about how you are collaborating with people in order to strengthen yourself.

The next to the last session is on your definition of success. This is where I have seen many people fall into unhappiness which is where they are not conscious about what truly defines success for them in their life and business. This chapter focuses on how you can create a definition of success that really works for you and makes you happy while you are building it.

The final chapter is about sharing your story. Once you do have this very clear understanding about the work you want to do, your unique strengths, your purpose and why you are doing the work, you have a strong consistent story. One thing that I find with many entrepreneurs who have many interests is they have a hard time explaining exactly who they are and what they do. You need to figure out a way to take all of your diverse ingredients and offerings and communicate it in such a way that people can clearly understand what you do.

Notable Quotes From The Book (21:00)

“But I say to you that when you work you fulfill a part of earth’s furthest dream assigned to you when that dream was born and in keeping yourself with labor you are in truth loving life. And to love life through labor is to be intimate with life’s inmost secret.” –Kahlil Gibran

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:36)

I am a speaker, writer, business coach and a very happy mom. I have spent time in just about every work mode that you can possible imagine. I spent time as an employee, a nonprofit professional, volunteer executive director, a consultant and independent business coach. I find great joy and interest in figuring out how people express themselves through their work.

My inspiration came from the work that I was doing specifically for about nine years which was working with people who were in corporate jobs that wanted to leave and start a business. Operating in the startup phase for nine years I began to see specific gaps and things that were missing from the way of framework for understanding the new world of work.

A summary of things you should know about Own Your Future according to Paul Brown

Introduction

The message is the book’s title Own Your Future. You’re the one who has to control your fate. If you do in fact Own Your Future you will have more control over what happens to you. Paul B Brown gives you real-life insights from stories about successful entrepreneurs and answers the questions that you have when facing uncertainty.

The Book’s Unique Quality

What really makes it different is I set out to figure out who are the best people at dealing with uncertainty and it turns out that the people who are best at dealing with it are entrepreneurs. There is nothing more uncertain than starting a business and these people are masters at it. I asked myself if there was a way to figure out how they think and is the way they think applicable to the rest of us. I have noticed that they all figure out what they want to do, they take a small step towards that goal, and they pause after taking that step to see what they’ve learned and then repeat. If you want to reduce it into a formula it becomes act, learn, build, repeat and this is the way the best entrepreneur’s deal with uncertainty. Then I asked myself if this is the best way for us to manage our careers and I think it is. That is what makes it different from the others regarding this topic.

The Reader’s Takeaway

I’ll give you three words… Action Trumps Everything. If you want something to happen you have to take action in order for it to happen. If you just sit there with this wonderful idea but don’t do anything with it, all you’ll have is a wonderful idea. If you want to Own Your Future you need to take some action towards that goal.

A Deep Dive Into The Book

I started with trying to find common ground for everybody and I keep this part really short. The premise of the book begins with different examples of how the world has changed. After that I answer the questions what do you do in the face of uncertainty and what is your first step. You have got to stop being a deer in the headlights. The thing that stops just about everybody from owning their own future is that they are petrified. I think that this is the hardest thing that people have to overcome. We spend a lot of time with what it’s going to take to get you going. The idea is to take one small step, at a time, towards your goal. And sometimes we have to remember that the first or second step we take doesn’t always go so well. I’ll teach you what to do when your steps don’t work as well as planned. As we get towards the end I talk about how important it is to have a backup plan. Some people aren’t exactly interested in being an entrepreneur themselves but it’s always safe to have a backup plan just in case of an emergency. I end the book in the same way I started. The message is the books title Own Your Future. You’re the one who has to control your fate. If you do in fact Own Your Future you will have more control over what happens to you.

My career started as a newspaper reporter with Forbes, Financial World and Business Week. While working there I started writing book nights and weekends when it eventually shifted to a fulltime job about 20 years ago.

It was a combination of what do you do in the face of the unknown and what I personally experienced, after losing my job suddenly, that got me to sit down and write Own Your Future.

Other Books Recommended By The Author

Not exactly a book but the information I find interesting to read tends to be in newspapers and magazines.
