A summary of things you should know about Disruption by Design according to Paul Paetz:

Introduction

In this episode Paul Paetz takes a deep dive into his book, Disruption by Design where he shows you how to create products that disrupt and then dominate markets.

In his book Paetz provides a handbook of lessons that describe the differences in innovation techniques as well as examples from successful innovators that have disrupted markets and ones that should have but failed. The goal of this book is to teach you how disruption happens, where to look for disruptive opportunities, what it takes to be disruptive, and how to market disruptive products.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs or intrapreneurs who have ideas big enough to change the way we live, but need help developing and launching their product into a specific market.

The Book’s Unique Quality (5:29)

In Disruption by Design I have my own outline of methodology for predicting when disruption is likely and I provide a how-to guide that walks you through building a product, marketing strategy, and a business model that will enable your company to be disruptive. It’s also the only all in one book that summarizes everything from the theory, to prediction, to the practical how-to information and then gives you tips on how to stay on top after you’ve succeeded.

The Best Way To Engage (6:28)

It has been written in a way that there is a flow from one section to the next but you can also jump in and out where needed.

The Reader’s Takeaway (10:16)

The key idea is that you can design a company and a product to be disruptive and if you understand what the causal factors. If you follow these steps and design your business model correctly anybody can build a disruptive innovation from the ground up.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (8:32)

I hope entrepreneurs and innovators get a solid understanding of what causes disruption and how to do it on purpose.
The first section of the book is primarily about summarizing the theory and how to predict disruption.

The second section is the nuts and bolts of creating the product and marketing strategy and business model. I identify job to be done theory and how you identify products. And then I run through all the key marketing strategy points of segmentation position, pricing strategy, and so on.
And the third section is about what to do after you put the strategy in place and you’ve started to succeed at disruption.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 08:32

Notable Quotes From The Book (10:44)

“The product is what you are for not what you do.” – Paul Paetz

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:41)

I have been in the technology business over 30 years now and the first 2/3rd of that I was at a number of different startups and companies. I went out on my own after that and started a marketing services company and then joined a friend who was building a company providing services in disruptive innovation. From there I started Innovative Disruption which is a company that I run today providing services to disrupters and companies facing disruption.

There are a ton of books out today on disruption and most of what you see in the media is incorrect. The majority of startups aren’t in a position to afford my services and I think anybody can afford the $30 that the book cost.

Is innovation essential for your start-up? The answer is short and simple – YES! And it’s not just in the product that you need to innovate; you need to promote innovation in the workplace. And this is only possible if you have the right attitude.

How do you promote innovation in the workplace? Before you take the steps to attain this goal, you need to understand the basic difference between creativity and innovation. Creativity involves ideas while innovation implies the implementation of these ideas.

Let’s take a look at the steps you need to take to promote innovation at the workplace.

Step 1: Cultivate the right attitude. If your employees are just too afraid to speak up in front of you, they won’t bother to share their ideas with you. Cultivate the right attitude; not that of a ‘boss’, but that of a ‘leader’.

Make sure your employees look up to you, and feel free to discuss whatever innovations they think will do good to the organization. It will open the floodgates of ideas and approaches; and your business will benefit from their endeavors.

Step 2: Hire the right people. Individuals who love what they do and look forward to work are the best choices. Hire them. Look for passionate, focused people who believe in dreams and have the capability to achieve them too.

Also, keep in mind that your team members share the same vision about the organization, the product and the service. This will align their goals with yours and the team will work together as a single unit instead of an assortment of individual units.

Step 3: Re-imagine workplace environment. Today’s workplaces are maddening – what with the continuous emails, calls, conferences. Make sure the work environment is relaxed and cheerful. It will ensure the best from every team member.

Rethink the conventional pattern; a 9 to 5 routine in an office with whitewashed walls may not be the best place for innovative thoughts. A flexible approach works out to be a better option. Consider how to get the best from your entire team.

Step 4: Encourage employees. Put together a team of individuals with different capabilities, approaches and backgrounds. And welcome solutions to innovate sectors of the organization. It need not be about the innovation of the product only.

Allocate time for brainstorming sessions and urge people to be part of them. Training sessions to learn innovation techniques such as mind-mapping or lateral thinking may also prove to be advantageous for the employees at your organization.

Step 5: Reward innovation. Just persuading people to be innovative won’t do; you need to offer an incentive for them to do it on their own accord. An awards scheme to recognize the innovation in your employees can be an ideal way to do it.

It is not the reward but the recognition that matters. And also keep in mind that you need to enhance your tolerance levels to put up with mistakes. Give people the opportunity to learn from their mistakes. Don’t put off innovations, even if the ideas don’t always work out.

With a little effort, you will be able to create a work environment that promotes innovation.

Successful businesses don’t depend on a handful of people to come up with improvements. Instead, they create an environment conducive to the promotion of innovation. And this results in their success – not only in their products or services, but in every aspect.

Encouragement and empowerment of employees is important to attain this goal. And you need to have the right approach to make it real. Focus on how your employees can be at their best; and they will do their best for the organization too.

For a great book in reference, we recommend Ken Tencer’s piece entitled “Cause A Disturbance.”

A summary of things you should know about Cause A Disturbance according to Ken Tencer:

Introduction

A lot of books deal with steps to innovation and they argue whether seven steps are better than twelve. Cause A Disturbance delivers a very practical way of understanding your business a little better, to understand your customer and to understand how to keep engaging with new, better and improved ideas. If you are an innovative entrepreneur, this book interview is for you.

The Book’s Unique Quality

I think this is written from a very practical and entrepreneurial voice. A lot of books deal with steps to innovation and they argue whether seven steps are better than twelve. This is just a very practical way of understand your business a little better, to understand your customer and to understand how to keep engaging with new, better and improved ideas.

The Reader’s Takeaway

Well it’s in the title, cause a disturbance. You always have to be thinking about your next step, your next opportunity, the next way you can reengage your customers. If you don’t, your competitors will.

A Deep Dive Into This Book

There are four parts to the book. The first one describes why I wrote it. It’s all about simplifying innovation. I start with a very simple example of a cake pop. It’s like a piece of cake formed like a lollypop on a stick that a baker created out of some leftovers. It’s gone on to sell millions of units around the world. It just shows people that innovation doesn’t have to me monumental. It’s not just about products and services, it’s also about processes. Once you understand part one of the book, I get into defining your core business. A lot of people actually don’t understand what business they are in and what I mean by that is they talk to the commodity like “I make chairs” or “I sell pencils”. I use the example of Starbucks a lot of the time. The reason it’s grown is because Starbucks didn’t focus on the fact that it was selling coffee, it focused on the fact that it wanted to be an incredible meeting place. Moving from thinking about a cup of coffee to the human dynamic, how people want to meet, how they want to relate to one another. That enabled Starbucks to become this giant successful company when so many others are still one off. I think that getting away from the commodity, that thinking about your purpose is really important and it doesn’t matter what business you’re in. In part three of the book we go through six steps to the process behind causing a disturbance. We also have some ways to build teams and get things to market. The fourth part of the book we call the next ten percent. It’s my basic philosophy of getting up in the morning ask yourself what the next ten percent is. What is the new idea that you are going to bring to market? That turns the six steps that we talked about into an everyday function in our business. You have to get up every day and think about how you are going to delight your costumers one more time.

In the last part of the book we give you tips and ideas for you and your team on how you can do just that so that it becomes as natural as accounting or selling or anything else you do in your business.

Notable Quotes From This Book

“Don’t forget to change the oil” – Ken Tencer

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author

I started, built and sold a manufacturing firm 20 years ago and moved on to services where I help other entrepreneurs understand a little bit about the opportunities they have in front of them. I know what it’s like to get something going from scratch and all the fun and games along the way.

The inspiration comes from lot of people I’ve spoken to. I’ve been very fortunate since our first book came out in 2010 to speak to and to do workshops with thousands of people around the world. One thing that stuck out was they all seemed to have this mystical idea of innovation that it was monumental; that you had to be a large company and I just didn’t see it that way. I really wanted to let people know that it’s just not that hard.
