TEL 241: Shark Tank MOMpreneurs Take A Bite Out Of Publicity with Rachel Olsen

A summary of things you should know about Shark Tank MOMperneurs Take A Bite Out Of Publicity according to Rachel Olsen

Introduction (0:43)

I’m Rachel Olsen and I live in San Diego, California with my husband and two daughters. I’ve had over 20 years of marketing and media experience, starting my career in corporate America. My recent book is a number one Amazon Best Seller and Barbara Corcoran called it a “must read.” I’m also the founder of bestmomproducts.com, which is a media consulting firm with mompreneurs learn how to get the buzz that they deserve for their business.

The Book’s Unique Quality (04:05)

It’s one of the few books that isn’t written by one of the actual sharks and it’s interview based. It also focuses on media instead of funding for your business. It’s the only book endorsed by a shark, Barbara Corcoran, and it’s also the highest rated book on Amazon (that a shark didn’t write).

The Best Way To Engage (04:51)

It’s one of the few books that isn’t written by one of the actual sharks and it’s interview based. It also focuses on media instead of funding for your business. It’s the only book endorsed by a shark, Barbara Corcoran, and it’s also the highest rated book on Amazon (that a shark didn’t write).

The Reader’s Takeaway (10:30)

I would want that to be that any type of media or “media fame” doesn’t equal overnight success but it does provide validation that every business needs to gain credibility. Media is something ongoing that you need to do for your business to stay at the top of customers minds. I know this principle isn’t new for many, I think entrepreneurs tend to think that if they can just land one big media placement that the trajectory of their business will change. Sometimes it does but more often it’s something that they continually need to do.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (05:45)

It’s a short easy to read book, it’s an entertaining behind the scenes look at getting on and succeeding on the reality hit entrepreneur show Shark Tank. But it’s equally about learning how to pitch and present yourself to media and the realities of getting national exposure on the major hit show. It’s just six short chapters and you start out getting to know each mom’s story.

I’ll briefly introduce each one: the first one is Tiffany Krumins of Ava the Elephant (now Medimals). She was a nanny for a special needs child when she came up with her idea for a talking children’s medicine dispenser. She was Barbara’s first investment on the show so the book kind of goes through that.

Amber Schaub launched RuffleButts and it’s a ruffled baby bloomer and she did this before even having kids and it was one of the top fastest growing companies on the Inc 500 list. She went from being in real estate to being in the baby market and then having children and going down that road.

Another story I want to point out is Shelly Ehler because her story is a quintessential Shark Tank story. She started a 4 in 1 towel, her husband had lost his job and they were struggling financially and she kind of woke up in the middle of the night with her idea after being at the pool and trying to change her kids and struggling to do so. She looked around and realized that all the moms were struggling with the same thing. So she had to overcome so much because people were nay sayers so it was a total entrepreneurial emotional journey for her. She really takes you through in her story all the highs and the lows of being an entrepreneur. What actually happened is her deal that she received on Shark Tank actually dissipated after the show and she never got the check.

So I feel like looking at these stories that any entrepreneur can relate to this. The book is really their stories with some commentary on how they prepared for their pitch and kind of the reality of what happens afterwards which is not all roses all that time. I just kind of wanted to shed some light on the reality of that.

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (01:56)

I was a huge fan of Shark Tank and at the time it launched I was bringing a consumer product for parents to launch at market and I was pretty much obsessed with the show. I would see the mompreneurs go on (it’s a hybrid of mom-entrepreneur) and they were both managing babies at home and had these ideas and started businesses and at the time I just felt like I was just in the throws of baby-toddlerhood and I was just so impressed with how they were doing it. So I started a podcast and I was interviewing the mompreneurs because I wanted to learn how they were doing it and get the tips they had, and I noticed that most of the women I was talking to thought that getting a one time media placement would change their business overnight. So they would say things like “if I could only get my product on Good Morning America or Ellen or be one of Oprah’s favorite things then my business would just take off!” I knew from being in media that it had nothing to do with the one time placement, that PR and marketing are an ongoing process, but instead of being a nay-sayer I wanted to do it in a positive way. So I saw these trends and I knew I was going to write a book.
