A summary of things you should know about The Metronome Effect according to Shannon Susko:

Introduction

In this episode Shannon Susko takes a deep dive into her book, The Metronome Effect, where she reveals many effective ways to turbo charge the growth of any business.

In her book Susko provides a customized step-by-step action plan based on the best practices and tools that helped scale some of the most successful businesses today as well as ones she helped grow herself. The goal of the book is to teach you how to operate a company, how to scale a company dramatically, how to hold employees accountable, and how to organize a business into a smooth process.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who have a solid understanding of the best business practices and are in need of an easy, systematic way to tie them all into one cohesive framework.

The Book’s Unique Quality (2:48)

The biggest difference I wanted to make was to be prescriptive. This book will give the entrepreneur a step by step, here is what you should do, and when.

The Best Way To Engage (3:20)

Readers can definitely read it from front to back but they can also jump in and out where needed most.

The Reader’s Takeaway (10:30)

The one thing that I would recommend that the entrepreneur and leader look at within what they are living today is coming up with what I call setting your metronome. The leader is the metronome of the business and it’s important to set some expected habits that are going to happen every day.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (4:04)

There is a picture in the beginning of the book that I call The House. Every entrepreneur is focused on building a great house so that their organization can grow, scale, and really set out on the success that they are looking to achieve within the business. And at the very foundation of the house is the entrepreneur and the leader of the organization and that leader needs to be absolutely in tune with their own core values and their own purpose. And that then drives to ensuring there is clarity both for the leader and the rest of the organization around the core purpose of the organization. What follows that are the core values of the organization which is absolutely in tune with the core values of the entrepreneur and the leader of that organization. From there is knowing what your big goal is for the organization. This is a 10 to 30 year goal that will guide the organization and the leader to where they need to drive to. The other piece of the strategic thinking process is the execution plan and really creating a way for an organization to have a collaborative brain, peer accountability, as well as setting up a rhythm within the organization that will beat daily, weekly, quarterly, and annually. This creates the habits needed for an entrepreneur to think less about the next thing that we need to do and think more about what we need to do within our business.

With every chapter we step through, starting with the leader, works through every piece that I go through. At the end of every chapter are actions that are recommended, books to read, as well as things you can do if you are challenged in a particular area.

The goal was to bring forth a way that the entrepreneurs and the leaders can easily and practically execute and grow their business within a time where they usually feel they don’t have another minute.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 04:04

Notable Quotes From The Book (11:45)

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act but a habit.” – Aristotle

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:37)

I’ve been building high growth technology companies for the past 20 years and within that time I have very much found a great framework that I think others can learn from. Since the time of leaving my last organization I have been working with entrepreneurs and helping them scale up their own organizations.

The inspiration was to support other entrepreneurs in their journey in growing their company. While developing my first company I was looking for a silver bullet for myself to overcome that growth and sadly enough I came across many great tools but not one great framework that could pull it all together. This book allows an entrepreneur to understand that there is a framework available that you can bring in all the different tools that we learn along the way. I wanted to show entrepreneurs that there is a way that you can put this into play practically and grow your business at the same time.

A summary of things you should know about Building Your Booming Business according to David Mitchell:

Introduction

In this episode David Mitchell reveals all his insights on Building Your Booming Business where he discusses 5 foundations every organization must have to succeed.

In his book Mitchell delivers step-by-step business strategies and advice that will not only take your business to the top, but will help you systemize your business, build an effective team, provide high quality customer experiences, and drive more sales. The goal of the book is alleviate the consequences that come with unmotivated employees, escalating business issues, and an overworked schedule.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who own a business that is experiencing stagnant sales, a lack of employee motivation, and an inability to scale.

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:32)

In my book I write in a conversational tone so I use a lot of examples both from my own life and from some of my client’s lives. I gather all the information and put it in one place where a business owner can pick it up and have the basic nuts and bolts they need to create a business that’s going to be successful. A lot of the business books that I have found out there are very niche oriented and I wanted a book that ties it all together.

The Best Way To Engage (4:48)

I tried to create a progression that if someone were to sit down and start at page one they could read it all the way through. But I also structured it in a way that you can jump in and out where needed.

The Reader’s Takeaway (12:06)

In everything that you do in your business you need to be thinking about the next step.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (5:48)

The subtitle of the book is The Five Foundations Every Organization Must Have to Succeed. Everything that I do is built around five foundations which are Marketing, Leadership and Management, Operations, Finance, and Systems and Controls.

I started the book with Marketing and the reason why I started it with this topic is because nothing happens until somebody sells something. We don’t have a business until we put it out on the market and somebody pays us for the value that we provide them. I help the reader walk through everything from defining their product well, understanding who their target market is, pricing it appropriately and also creating marketing strategies that actually encourage action.

When I go into the Leadership and Management section I really dig deep into the leader verses the manager. They are two very different skills, a leader leads people, and a manager is somebody who manages things, processes or systems. But in order to move your organization you have to do both and sometimes you do have to manage people. At the same time you need to help inspire them so I talk about how to do that and how to develop leadership styles that are appropriate for the stage of team development.

Operations are about working with your clients to develop operations and create one that not only delivers a great experience but also is able to deliver consistently.

In the section on Finance I talk about how to get more consistently with your clients and I also discuss cash management.

The Systems and Controls section dives down deep into how to get all of these different sections to talk to each other.

At the end of the book I throw in an extra foundation called Your Personal Foundation. This discusses things like building your integrity and how people don’t judge us on our intentions but rather on what we do. So we discuss how to follow through, time management, and rounding it all out with how to prioritize between work and family.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 05:48

Notable Quotes From The Book (13:10)

“As business owners we are plate spinners and as plate spinners we can’t start all 20 of our plates that we are trying to get spinning at the same time.” –Unknown

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:39)

I am a business coach, consultant, and professional key note speaker. I take an entrepreneurial and business view to business leaders, owners, and entrepreneurs to help them build their business.

As I was working with business owners, entrepreneurs, and leaders I found that I was saying the same thing over and over again. So I took the same concepts and principles that I taught to my clients and combined it all in one book.
