A summary of things you should know about The Prosperous Leader according to Jacob Engel:

Introduction

In this episode Jacob Engel reveals all the insights on his book, The Prosperous Leader, where he provides a comprehensive look into how smart people can achieve success independently.

In his book Engel gives you 24 simple, actionable steps to realistically analyze your personal strengths and weaknesses so you can create your own path to economic success. The goal of the book is to help you maximize your strengths while developing the actual skills you need to strengthen your own leadership and management abilities.

This book is perfect for aspiring entrepreneurs who are having trouble cultivating their own unique abilities and need help maximizing their strengths to become effective leaders and smart managers.

The Book’s Unique Quality (6:22)

I would say what I bring to the table is a few different things. Number one I’ve ran a business myself and been involved in growth so I’ve got the practical experience. The other thing is that everything in my book is practical, useful, and step by step doable for the reader.

The Best Way To Engage (8:15)

Every chapter stands on its own so you can jump around.

The Reader’s Takeaway (28:56)

If you did not make it through college or didn’t make the A/B grades don’t despair! Read!

A Deep Dive Into The Book (8:57)

One of the greatest challenges that I see with entrepreneurs and business owners is that they seem to be going around and around in circles. Meaning they start a business, have a good concept, they build on it, and then all of the sudden things start to fall apart and they are back to square one. Many entrepreneurs have not figured out what it is that makes them successful or prosperous.

In the beginning of the book I write about the foundations that a person needs in order to build a successful enterprise or organization. I start off with the concept that you have got to know yourself and understand your strengths, abilities, and weaknesses.

The second chapter that I go into is nature vs nurture. Are we nature or do we learn and acquire things as we go through life? What I argue here is that there is a third component and that is called choice. I try to define the different choices that a person can make.

In the third chapter I move over to effective communications. I walk through the three types of communicators which are passive, aggressive, and assertive and each one has its own issues. What you really want to achieve is assertive and effective communication.

In chapter four I talk about emotional intelligence and what that means is when you hire people there a two parts to the hire. There are technical skills and then there are the soft skills. And as a business owner you must know how both of those work.

In chapter six I talk about time management. Time management is a challenge for almost everybody and it’s a great tool for effectively managing your time for yourself and others.

Chapter seven I discuss smartphones and if they are really smart in the work place.

In chapter eight I speak about a very interesting subject which is known today as ADD/ADHD. Many business owners have it; some of them realize it and other don’t. I help coach business owners and managers through the issues of ADD.

In chapter 10 I talk a lot about goals and creating them.

Chapter 11 I speak about critical thinking and how people don’t like to think too much.

I also cover how to be the right type of boss, why every business owner needs a coach, and how to build trust with your people.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 08:57

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:35)

I was born in Brooklyn New York and still live in New York. My father came to this country with no family, money or language and was lucky enough to find a job in a little spice shop. My dad eventually moved to Brooklyn to open up his own spice shop in 1955. I joined the business in 1975 and we were doing about 10 million dollars in sales which was very significant at the time. My dad passed away in 1995 when the business was doing over a hundred million and eventually the business grew close to two hundred million. I realized that I was in the people business and that intrigued me. Entrepreneurs have great advantages but it also comes with disadvantages and I figured out how to build on our strengths and how to mitigate our weaknesses. And that’s how I got into understanding everything about starting a business, running a business, and building a business.

I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d be a writer or a speaker. I was really motivated and inspired by my mentor who is probably one of the greatest people that studied and understands entrepreneurs. He told me to write a book and share my experiences and tips. So I spent about two years writing and rewriting.

A summary of things you should know about It’s Not The How Or The What But The Who according to Claudio Fernandez-Araoz

Introduction

In his book, It’s Not the How or the What but the Who, Fernandez-Araoz makes the reader aware that we are not yet equipped with the knowledge to make positive people decisions in professional environments. Simply put, it is the who that matters in the team you build around you.

The Book’s Unique Quality

I think it’s a unique combination of experience, research and passion for the topic.

The Best Way To Engage

It can be read separately but also independently. It’s also for ADD type of readers with it being a short read and you get some practical recommendations on how to achieve greatness.

The Reader’s Takeaway

The point that whoever you surround yourself with should not be left to chance.

A Deep Dive Into The Book

The format is very engaging and made up of four short chapters. It starts with an introduction, moves on to the four chapters and ends with a conclusion. Each of which start with a fascinating personal story and I come up with five practical recommendations on how to succeed by surrounding ourselves with the best.

The first section starts with The Enemy within. All of these biases that we have inside of us sabotage our people relationships. We are unprepared to make great decisions because unfortunately we have the wrong brain. Our brain is basically a piece of hardware that didn’t have any major upgrade for the last 10,000 years. We made it to these days by making our big decisions based on three criteria, similarities, familiarity and conflict. Unfortunately these types of criteria are not what we need today to be great teams. Great teams need complementary skills which imply variety and diversity which are the opposite of similarity and familiarity. We are hardwired to make world decisions therefore I make the reader aware of all these biases because if you can avoid the traps, you have won half of the battle.

The second section is entitled Outside Obstacles and Opportunities and here I summarize many of the challenges we face when making big decisions. One of the chapters I label Bad Candidate, Great Reference. I describe the problems when people afraid of being sued sometimes sugarcoat their references. I illustrate what the best practices to getting references right because references are more important than an interview.

The third section continues telescoping out to the right people and I describe what the right people are made of. I introduce the concept of potential and I tell a story of a survivor of a dramatic accident back in 1972. In this chapter I describe what the indications of potential are and how you can relate with them.

In part four I move from the great people to the bright future. In the essay titled Teaching a Turkey to Climb a Tree I explain how some people say that you can train a turkey to climb a tree but they would rather hire someone else to do it. Organizations do frequently hire from outside and they should invest many more resources in identifying their high potentials and helping the best become even better. I am convinced that we can change, advance and progress much more than we think.

In the fifth section of the book I move from individual greatness to collective greatness. Many times I have been approached by a human resources leader contacting me for research and when he or she would start going through the list of specifications it looked impossible for anyone. You cannot get the perfect individuals; you should be able to make the best of your individuals by setting up highly effective teams. In this section I introduce the six dimensions for team effectiveness which are balance, diversity of skills, alinement, energy, resilience, openness and effectiveness. I explain how different challenges require different think compositions and I explain how to achieve this.

In the sixth section I move from collective greatness at a team level to a better society with applications of all of the above at the highest levels. I speak about Russian roulette at the top, true leading boards and then thriving on crisis. I also speak about sustainability-the virtuous circles and electing country presidents.

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author

I am a global expert on hiring promotion decisions as well as leadership assessment and development. I’m a frequent speaker at business gatherings in the Americas, Europe and Asia. I’ve been working for almost three decades as an executive search consultant for the firm Egon Zehnder and a regular guest lecturer at Harvard Business School.

For almost three decades I’ve been working as an executive search consultant and seven years ago I published another book called Great People Decisions. Great People Decisions was basically about hiring and as a result of the success of that book I’ve circled the world up to ten times a year and became convinced that all over the world the key for organization and success is to surround ourselves with the best. I decided to write a book about how to succeed by surrounding ourselves with the best and helping them thrive.
