Who is Jon Gordon and what you can learn from him:

For the budding entrepreneur, there are many lessons that can be learned from the teachings of Jon Gordon. No matter how old a person is or what their level of business experience is, they are able to gain important perspective by practicing what he preaches. The following are the five key lessons to be learned from Jon Gordon.

1. Discover Your Passion

Gordon is consistent with his message, telling his acolytes about the importance of discovering what they are passionate about and pursuing it. He believes that we are all put on this planet for a specific purpose and that life is meaningless unless you take the time to chase it.

Fortunately, he also teaches people that their passion may not reveal itself immediately. While you may not know what your passion is at the current moment, you must live your life in a way that increases your chances of finding it.

The best way for a person to find their true calling is to seek certain jobs and experiences that will nurture their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. Everyone has a gift, something that they were born to accomplish. Identifying that gift and allowing it to blossom is crucial to a person’s long term success and happiness.

2. Beware Of Your Hobbies

When people are trying to figure out what their gift is and how to fulfill their purpose on this planet, they will often select hobbies as their default strength. Jon Gordon teaches us that just because we love spending time doing something, this does not mean that we will be able to make a career out of it.

Someone may truly enjoy spending time on their social media pages, but this does not mean that they should be working for Twitter or Facebook. You may enjoy making food for your friends and family. However, this does not mean that you have what it takes to be the next top chef.

It’s important to zero in on the aspect of the hobby that you truly love the most and focus on that. For example, a person who enjoys restaurants and fine dining may believe that they need to own a restaurant in order to realize their dreams.

There is a way for every person to participate in their hobby, without simply trying to monetize something that they would do for free anyways.

3. Learn From Past Experiences

Even if the current job or career that you have is not totally fulfilling, there is no reason why you should not be able to gain valuable lessons and insight from it. Every experience that you have, no matter how good or bad it is, prepares you for the future in ways that you are not able to currently imagine.

Being forced to take a job that is below your current station or is not related to the field you’d truly like to be working in can be a tough blow. But the person who dedicates themselves to the task at hand and focuses on how they can help the company or business they are a part of can open up doors to new opportunities down the line.

Nothing in life is permanent and the person who realizes this fact and decides to simply gain as much as they can from the situation they are in positions themselves for bigger and better things. Each moment of our lives, even those that seem truly insignificant, prepares us for what’s to come.

4. Your Dream Job Isn’t The One You Dreamed Of

Jon Gordon teaches us that the first step towards our dream job is to quit the one we have. But, he preaches the importance of quitting that job for the right reasons. Our dream job will not materialize just because we get frustrated with the job we have and walk off in a huff.

People spend their whole lives preparing for a job that they’ve envisioned in their mind’s eye since they were young. Life does not tend to work out that way. Most times, we tend to end up with a great career that is unlike the one we spent our lives dreaming about and preparing for.

The dreams we have during childhood and throughout our formative years can help to guide us, but should not be seen as a blueprint for living. Keeping your options open allows you to end up with an amazing career, one that you did not see coming.

5. The Future Can’t Be Rushed

We are always in a hurry to move on to the next thing, before we’ve even figured out the present moment. Jon Gordon believes that there is a seed inside all of us and that the process of nurturing this seed so that it can grow into a proper plant should not be rushed for any reason.

It is human nature to want things to happen for us right now. People tend to be very impatient, not realizing that if they get what they want before they are truly ready, they may not be able to rise to the occasion.

There is a certain process that must be adhered to and work that needs to be done along the way. The path to achieving your purpose does not occur in a linear fashion. Allow the process to prepare, shape and mold you, so that when opportunity finally does knock on your door, you are prepared to answer.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who have a hard time accepting the everyday challenges that come with life and are searching for a way to eliminate negativity from their lives.

The Book’s Unique Quality (4:18)

I think the fact that’s it’s a fable and it was one of those first books to really talk about the importance of positivity and overcoming negative energy.

The Best Way To Engage (5:16)

A lot of people read it from front to back within a day or two. And then after you read it you will find an action plan in the back of the book.

The Reader’s Takeaway (7:16)

In the book I tell you about the man who goes to a village to speak to the wise man and he says to the wise man that he feels like there are two dogs inside of him. He has a positive and generous dog but also a mean spirited angry negative dog. These dogs fight all the time and he doesn’t know who is going to win. The wise man tells him that the dog that will win will be the one he feeds the most, so feed the positive dog.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (6:01)

The Energy Bus is 10 rules for the ride of your life. It’s about a guy name George who is miserable and negative, his team at work is in disarray and he has problems at home. George gets on the bus and meets Joy the bus driver who calls him Sugar and shows him 10 rules for the ride of his life. These 10 rules not only help him become a more positive leader but a better father and a better husband. George learns these 10 rules and then applies them to his business, life and work.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 6:01

Notable Quotes From The Book (8:44)

“The goals in life is to live young, have fun, and arrive at our final destination as late as possible because the goal is to enjoy the ride.” – Jon Gordon

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:22)

I am a writer and speaker, I consider myself a writer first. I love writing fables that inspire and encourage people. I am a husband and a father to two teenagers.

I was walking, praying, and struggling in my own life and the idea just came to me. The idea of a bus driver who inspires their passengers to change their life and to become a better leader at work just came to me. And I wrote the book in about 3 and ½ weeks of pure inspiration.

A summary of things you should know about The Carpenter according to Jon Gordon

Introduction

In this episode, best-selling author and epic storyteller, Jon Gordon paints the perfect picture in how to properly create a start up from the ground up. Jon’s book The Carpenter highlights many success stories and business strategies for the entrepreneur looking to outlast others alike. Jon presents a strong main idea that you shouldn’t focus on building your business, you should focus on using your business to love, serve and care and with that mentality your business will grow exponentially.

The Book’s Unique Quality

I don’t think there is another book that takes these concepts of love, serve, and care and really dives into them. If we love what we do, serve others and care what you produce we’ll make the difference.

The Reader’s Takeaway

I would go with Care. It would have to be caring more. We could all work harder but to work harder you have to care more. You have to care so much about what you’re doing that you don’t allow yourself to be distracted from doing your best. People want to do business with people who care about them and I really believe that when you look at the great companies, they stand out in ways of showing that they care.

VIDEO: Wade’s Two-Minute Takeaway on The Carpenter

A Deep Dive Into The Book

I’ll take you through some of the main principles in the book. The first one starts with designing your masterpiece, before you build something you must design it. You need to figure out what it looks like and what are you doing at your best. If you are succeeding but you don’t have time for your kids and family, that’s not what you want your masterpiece to look like. You need to focus on your priorities a little more to create your masterpiece.

The next chapter goes into being a craftsman. A carpenter builds things but a Craftsman creates a work of art. It’s not about doing things the fastest and the cheapest, it’s about doing things the best. I believe if you really take pride in your work and you see yourself as a craftsman, you’ll stand out. We show the difference between people who are just building and those who are building the work of art with their life and their work.

We then move into the mindset and belief to build something great. Optimism and belief have to be a part of anything you’re building because you’ll change and face challenges through the building process. I write about great ways to approach it from the right prospective and right thinking.

From there we move into the three greatest strategies of all. Love, care and serve. If you focus on these three strategies you’ll stand out from anyone and everyone who doesn’t practice these three principles.

Notable Quotes From The Book

“Don’t focus on building your business, focus on using your business to love, serve and care and your business will grow exponentially” – Jon Gordon

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author

I am a writer and a speaker who has written a number of books notably The Energy Bus. Most importantly I’m a husband and a dad to two children who are now 16 and 14. I also work with a lot of professional sports teams, college teams, companies, school districts and I am really passionate about developing positive leaders, organizations and teams.

It all started with a carpenter that came to my house for some work. It was during the recession and I asked him how business was with the expectation that it probably wasn’t doing so well. It was his response that took me by surprise. He had been busier than ever. Average Carpenters weren’t doing well, but the great ones, the ones who stood out in the market place, they were thriving! He cared about his work and cared about his clients and I realized that the greatest success strategies of all are to love, serve and care. Those who care more, do more. So the idea of caring more and the idea of how to stand out more in your work was the inspiration behind writing this book.
