A summary of things you should know about How To Quit Working according to Jeff Steinmann:

Introduction

In this episode Jeff Steinmann reveals all his insights on his book, How To Quit Working, where shares a simple plan to leave your job for a life a freedom.

In his book Steinmann provides flexible strategies, examples, and step-by-step instructions on what it takes to create your own business with the smallest amount of repercussions as possible. The goal of the book is to teach you innovative strategies for becoming an entrepreneur, how to overcome typical marketing barriers, how to develop a business idea while working, and how to find your ideal market.

This book is perfect for aspiring entrepreneurs who are currently working for someone else and are ready to take their entrepreneurial journey to the next level.

The Book’s Unique Quality (2:30)

I tried really hard to eliminate all of the business words and just talk in plain simple English. I try to be really practical and tailor all of the information in the book to someone who is working a full-time job and trying to get out and start their own business.

The Best Way To Engage (3:53)

I specifically designed the book to be read from front to back.

The Reader’s Takeaway (12:13)

The concept that I want the reader to take away is to get away from this whole thought of success and failure. You have got to start to think about everything you do in terms of a hypothesis.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (5:01)

The most important thing for those working a full-time job and trying to quit and start a business is changing the way that you look at starting a business. You have to get away from what I call the idea mentality and the idea mentality is perpetuated by shows like Shark Tank. You have to get away from that idea and move towards the concept of figuring out what it is that people are already gravitating towards you for and that’s where your business has to start if you want to be successful and remain sane. Once you come up with your idea you will need to get the word out via social media or bulletin boards or church groups or any other way you see fit. From there you will want to figure out what problems people have with that particular topic and find ways the meet those needs and fix those problems. Now that you have that hypothesis you need to go out and test it and the way you do that is by asking people if they want to pay you money to do it. Your hypothesis is not proven until someone offers you money and it isn’t until then that you know you have an idea that is worth something.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 05:01

Notable Quotes From The Book (13:09)

“If social media is changing your life than you are on it too much.” – Jeff Steinmann

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:36)

I am kind of like everyone else in that I went to high school and college and I thought there was no better option but to get a job. So I fell into a career in technology and did that for about 15 years and tried many times to escape the gravity of the corporate world and was unsuccessful many of those times. April 15, 2012 I was finally successful and I have been doing business in marketing consulting, real estate investing, and also building this great platform around how to help people quit their jobs and start a business.

The inspiration was to share the difference in terms of mindset, approach, and all those different kinds of things when wanting to quit your job and start your own business.

A summary of things you should know about The 30 Year Paycheck according to Sander Biehn:

Introduction

In this episode Sander Biehn takes a deep dive into his book, The 30 Year Paycheck, where he discusses what makes corporate America so demeaning and why employees put up with it.

In his book Biehn where he tells the story of the narrator who strives to avoid the 30 year paycheck, but faces a personal toll while trying to remain employed, raise a family, and save for retirement. The goal of the book is to teach you lessons that help employees, mid-level managers, and executives find a path needed to grow personally.

This book is perfect for aspiring entrepreneurs who are trapped in a full-time job and need a guide to help them work around the pressures that come with working in corporate America.

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:22)

I put my book in a narrative format so that people could really approach it and read it like they would a piece of fiction but learn something from a business perspective. The advice and wisdom that you find in the book is really in between the lines a little bit. You watch this character as this character goes through a career and you learn from the mistakes that this character makes. You see the character change and see the character realize a path forward and I think that’s a very powerful way for people to learn.

The Reader’s Takeaway (9:51)

No matter who you are or what it is that you know how to do, you have the gifts to be enough and not only to be enough but to be superior at who you are. I believe it’s in the heart of every person to be something amazing and to do something absolutely spectacular with their lives and career.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (5:05)

The book starts out with a young person who is in college and graduating with a degree in classical studies of philosophy. This degree doesn’t have a lot of meaningful path forward as to what to do with it as you get out of school so this character falls into a career in sales. The question we are trying to answer is why does the character stay in this sales position that wasn’t necessarily a dream job in the first place? This job is a safety net for the character and what we find is that when you stay in that safe spot you start to lose the innovation that’s in your heart and the ideas that you have.

As this character moves through his career he starts burying the way he sees the world and starts to adopt seeing the world in the way that he thinks his superiors want him to. In the end we find that that doesn’t serve him very well and it limits his career inside this large company. In the end of the book the character decides to go back to his roots and do things his own way.

He finds that large organizations really aren’t suited for people marching to the beat of their own drum. People that have this entrepreneurial spirit, there are ways that they can innovate inside of organizations.

I talk about a number of things that organizations need to do to evolve and it concentrates on what we as individuals need to do to bring us back to our roots. In this case this individual decides he needs to move on and create his own thing. I think what’s really important about this is it talks about the evolution and what happens to most people as they fall into a career. Very few of us end up actually going after what we really want to do straight out of college.

I talk about the best thing that we can do to not only be successful but also happy is to follow who we are and what it is that excites us. By not doing those things we start to limit ourselves and eventually it starts taking away from a piece of who we really are and enabling us to be the best that we can be.

Notable Quotes From The Book (11:25)

“I was trying to act like my boss but really I was just a cheap knockoff of who my boss was and I was totally forgetting who I was.” – Main Character in the book

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:37)

I have worked for about 20 plus years for a very large telecommunications firm in sales. I have always been in sales since I got out of college to almost up to the present. About a year and a half ago I left the company and decided to start my own business in social selling for business to business sellers.

I was doing a bunch of traveling as a sales person and I was hearing a lot of the same types of people complaining about things about their work. I was hearing these same kinds of complaints everywhere I went and I started realizing that I had some answers to these complaints which led to the book. The other thing that inspired me is that I wanted to write a different kind of business book. I wanted to make my book an overall good read and I felt that that was missing in the world.

A summary of things you should know about You Can Retire Sooner Than You Think according to Wes Moss:

Introduction

In this episode Wes Moss share his book, You Can Retire Sooner Than You Think, where he gives a five-step process for getting on the fast track to a great retirement.

In his book, Moss uncovers his findings of an intensive study on retirement revealing that it does not take financial genius, millions of dollars, or high end investment skills to have a solid retirement. The goal of the book is to show you how to determine what you need retirement money for, figure out how much you need to save, and develop an income stream from multiple sources.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who are successfully running a business and are looking for a quick, painless transition from work to retirement.

The Book’s Unique Quality (5:07)

I have determined that there are some concrete financial benchmarks that Americans need to set their sights on.

The Best Way To Engage (22:43)

You can jump in and out. I would love for everyone to read the whole thing but if you just read the first 3 chapters, chapter 8 and the appendix you will get a whole lot out of this book too.

The Reader’s Takeaway (24:19)

I want people to understand that contrary to popular belief being able to stop working and being in a financial position of security is more accessible than most people think.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (7:14)

My answer to the question does money buy happiness is yes but only to a point. Throughout the book you will find different financial thresholds to get to. In my study I found that the happy people needed to get to around 82,000 in income. This is a really important prevailing theme that goes throughout the book.

Another interesting part of my data found is that if you chart out the number of years to pay off a mortgage, relative to levels of happiness, very clearly in my data you’ll see that as the years come down the level of happiness reportedly goes up. So the lower years you have to pay off your mortgage you will find greater level of happiness. I have a whole chapter in the book on how to figure out a way to get rid of your mortgage as soon as possible.

Another thought in the book has to do with multiple sources of income. What I have discovered in the book is that there is a real sense of happiness as we increase the number of different income sources we have. There are a lot of psychological benefits from knowing that if one of those incomes goes wrong you have a lot of others to replace it with. I talk about that as we evolve in the next 20 or 30 years we must really understand and think about possibly not having multiple ways to earning your income.

This really is a book about how to make the right decisions that will lead you to retiring and hopefully retiring earlier than you think.

Notable Quotes From The Book (27:24)

Instead of a favorite quote I have a favorite chart and that is the relationship between happiness and years left to pay off your mortgage.

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:38)

I have been in financial media and the investment business for about seventeen years now. I have been a part of WSB Radio in Atlanta for the better part of six years and really have had a lot of fun in the last year after writing You Can Retire Sooner Than You Think.

I have always wondered if money could really buy happiness. As entrepreneurs I think we have all had this fear of running out of money. About four years ago I heard Dave Ramsey talk about a study at Princeton about money and happiness. I wanted to take this study a lot further and answer the questions about the financial levels and habits of happy people.

A summary of things you should know about The Art of Resignation according to Steven Feiner:

Introduction

In this episode Steven Feiner gives a deep dive into his book, The Art of Resignation, where he shares his detailed strategies and talking points for quitting a job.

In his book, Feiner takes you through the full cycle of the resignation process in a practical, down-to-earth way with suggestions, examples, templates, and scripts. The goal of this book is to help you learn when to quit, understand the logistics and timing of quitting, prepare yourself for resignation day, and get inside the mind of your boss.

This book is perfect for aspiring entrepreneurs who want to quit their current job and need the proper guidance on resigning without burning any bridges in the process.

The Book’s Unique Quality (4:37)

It’s not just another leadership book or a negotiation book. For me resignation is much more than just a letter and I looked and found that there wasn’t really anything out there that I thought was good advice about this topic.

The Best Way To Engage (6:41)

You can skip around to whatever best fits your needs. Reading it cover to cover works too.

The Reader’s Takeaway (23:26)

Resignation is negotiation. Don’t burn your bridges, be rational and calm.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (7:44)

This book presents at a high level the resignation framework taking you through the full stages of resignation. Resignation is more than just a letter and it can be done is a very artful and classic way.

Chapter one is about when to quit. This chapter kicks off with the reassurance that if you have ever thought about quitting you are not alone. From there we go through the signs that it’s time to quit. We ask the reader to go through this checklist and really evaluate for themselves if they are ready. The next section of the book is a journaling exercise that I got from a course on meditation called search inside yourself. In this meditation we ask the reader to picture where they will be in five years and to just write. What you write about your career is so telling and it’s important to what you’re thinking about in the future and where your career is and isn’t in that picture. From there we go in to the financial implications of quitting and how you are going to support yourself financially. This also includes insurance, impact on your retirement savings and the relocation.

Chapter two is about the psychology of quitting and we go deep inside the mind of your boss. We introduce the concept of a slow breakup and how to address your boss with this issue. It’s important to let your boss know that this is about you and your career. Next we go in to the difference in top performer’s vs average to low performers and then what your coworkers are thinking. You are going to get questions and we help you know how to respond to those questions. Next we go in to managing your mindset and I think this is one of the most important sections because resignation is really just a negotiation. In any negotiation you always get the best outcome when it’s about the other person and your emotions don’t cloud anything. By managing your mindset and staying calm you are able to change the effects of the negotiation and resignation.

Chapter three is about timing and how much notice you should give. We talk about leaving if you are in the middle of an employment contract and the potential legal liability the company might have. We answer bonuses, stock options and other financial matters.

Chapter four is all about logistics. This talks about if e-mail resignations are ever acceptable and how to go about doing this. We talk about the best time of day to quit and when to tell people in the office that you are quitting.

Chapter five is about the actual day of resignation and we give tips on how to cope with the stress and dealing with second thoughts. We talk about what to expect and the importance of always being prepared. Knowing what to expect and having answers built in is really valuable and will make you more prepared and help you get better outcomes.

Chapter six is about the last few weeks of your job. This chapter covers how to deal with your coworkers after your resignation and we give you a checklist of what you should and shouldn’t do. We talk about how to handle the goodbye party and how to leave in a gracious way.

Chapter seven is about post-resignation contact. This chapter talks about staying in touch with your former employees and bosses and how to go about doing that.

Chapter eight is about resigning in special instances and we cover briefly about quitting in different cultures.

We complete the book with a nice resignation summary. We conclude with a few tips and tricks so make sure to read this last chapter and print it out the day of your resignation or a couple days before.

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:37)

I am originally from New York and started working in consulting in Chicago. I decided to move and work for Google in San Francisco. I have lived in now six different cities and have been to just about 40 different countries.

Coming out of college my first job was for IBM and my parents were very proud of me and everyone knew the name IBM. Everything was great except I was really interesting in doing strategic consulting. So two month in to my first job coming out of school I decided to quit in favor of a better job offer. Having this conversation with my loved ones didn’t seem to be going over too well. I realized there was so much stress involved in this resignation and I didn’t want to ruin my career prospects by doing what I thought was the right decision. After I quit IBM I moved on to a firm called LEK Consulting and I eventually got recruited away to a startup. As I was leaving consulting I realized I really enjoyed my time there and I wanted the option to be able to come back to my consulting firm should the startup fail. The normal way you get out of consulting is from being completely burned out and I realized there needed to be a better answer to this problem. I researched and figured out how best to do the perfect resignation. One that takes the stress out of it and one that really allows you to cherish the relationships you have and keep the bridges in tacked.
