A summary of things you should know about Profit Hacking according to Steven Daar:

Introduction

In this episode Steven Daar shares his book, Profit Hacking, where he gives online entrepreneurs a 3 step formula for marketing and growing a business.

In his book Daar shows you exactly how to hack and scale each of the 3 steps showing you the leverage points hidden in your business and the fastest way to double your monthly profits. The goal of the book is to teach you how to significantly increase traffic, grow your business on a massive level, maximize every marketing activity you do, and stop wasting your time on ineffective business strategies.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who currently own an online business that is struggling to see a consistent increase in digital traffic, conversion rates, and profit.

The Book’s Unique Quality (4:18)

I believe this book is almost like a piece of art. The designs that helped with the book did an incredible job. This book is also very focused on action and gives very clear bite size action steps for people to do.

The Best Way To Engage (5:38)

Ideally this book is one that you can refer back to over and over to continue to get value from and grow your business from the principles I give in the book.

The Reader’s Takeaway (12:26)

It would be that traffic conversion and economics are all extremely important and they all need attention but a lot of people outweigh the percentage of their time and resources to getting traffic. Even if you just take 20% of your time of your traffic generating activities and give it to working on A/B testing or conversion optimization as well as figuring out how else to serve or further monetize or give value to your customers you will do your business so many favors.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (7:12)

The subtitle of the book is the entrepreneur’s three part formula for maximizing success and that three part formula is traffic, conversion, and economics.

The very first part of the book is about trying to change the mindset of the reader. What I see a lot of times with entrepreneurs is they creating their website for their business and website is just one big assumption. So everything from the layout, the design, colors, copies, and the images. They are all just guesses as to what is the most effective thing to show to the visitor that will get them to want to engage further. People build their website and think that now they need to drive traffic to it. Driving traffic to a website that you never continue to work on, test or improve to make it more effective at converting visitors, you’re not going to get the full return on investment of the time and/or money that you spent trying to bring traffic to that site. The thing is trying to convince people that they often don’t have a traffic problem but the truth is if you were really good at conversion and economics then traffic would almost never be a problem. A huge lesson of the book is that traffic becomes a lot easier every time you increase your conversions and every time you get stronger at your economics. The two things that increase your revenue per visitor are increasing your conversion rate and increasing the average order value or average customer value. Getting more traffic will never increase that side of your equation or increase your revenue but once you are break even or profitable then traffic is just gasoline that you want to put into the engine of your business.

Notable Quotes From The Book (13:38)

“Books don’t work, people do.” – Steven Daar

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:55)

I was basically born and bred entrepreneur and I started my first business really soon after college. I had the passion, drive, and good ideas but I didn’t know that much about marketing and sales. It came clear soon after that if I was going to make this original business successful I would have to learn how to reach the people that I wanted to talk to and speak to them effectively. I got really deep into learning how to do those things specifically on the internet and eventually that lead to me writing Profit Hacking.

The inspiration behind writing this book was it was the book that I wished I had five and a half years ago when I started my first business. If I had this book it would have saved me a lot of time, frustration, and lost money. A big part of the mission and purpose of the book is to inspire more entrepreneurs to not only learn how to drive more traffic, convert it and monetize it so that they are more profitable, but also how to leverage that into more good done for the world.

Realizing the answer to this question is often a difficult task. And often, it takes a series of hurdles for you to identify this trait in your personality. But how do you know whether it is right for you to quit your day job and start on a venture of your own? Well, there is no easy answer to this.

The good thing is that most entrepreneurs share certain characteristics. If you can identify with these, chances are high that you may have that entrepreneurial spirit in you. But don’t despair if you don’t fit them all.

Let’s take a look at some ways to tell if you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur:

You have a passion to do something. Passion for what they do is what drives the successful entrepreneurs. Edison tried and failed 10,000 times before he could design the light bulb. We may have had to do with candles still if he had given up. But he had the passion that drove him to success. Do you have the same?

You have a seriously poor employment history. Have you quit more jobs than you can remember? Not because you were not good but because you felt you were stuck – maybe even at the top when even success gets stale. If so, the next best thing is to start on an endeavor of your own where you can effectively and efficiently manage yourself.

You have the nerve to take risks. Fred Smith nearly failed his business management course when he developed a business model that focused on express delivery service. But this did not deter him from putting his thoughts into action. And FedEx was born. All entrepreneurs aren’t overnight successes. But they have the courage to follow their dreams.

You think outside the box. When the worst financial crisis hits the world, many entrepreneurs cowered in front of it. But Sarah Lavely saw an opportunity. She offered people the opportunity to vent out their frustration and relieve stress in an amazing way – throwing stuff at a wall after you buy it.

You have a broader perspective of security. For some, a secured job is a good enough thing. For others, there is no security at a job that depends on others. You never know when a silly or spiteful decision of a boss or a mess-up of the board of directors will screw it. For such souls, security is only in a job where you yourself are responsible for everything.

You have the determination to get back on your feet even after a bad fall. If you mope after every little failure, it’s best to avoid entrepreneurship. Successful entrepreneurs get back on their feet immediately after they face failure. Take Bill Gates for example – his initial Traf-O-Data was a super failure. But he moved on and became a success.

You have the support of people close to you. No entrepreneur is a success on his/her own. They need the support of their family and friends to make it through the tough times – and there sure are enough of those! Also, successful entrepreneurs never surround themselves with “yes-men”; instead, they depend on truthful advisors who can tell all at their face.

It doesn’t take a superhuman to succeed in business. But it does require the right traits to be happy and successful at it.

If you fit all these seven signs, then you have the most of what it takes to be an entrepreneur. If you don’t, no worries! There are no sure formulas to success and you may turn out to be an amazing entrepreneur even if you had a successful career as an employee. In the end passion and motivation are the key aggregators of a true entrepreneur.

A summary of things you should know about Virtual Freedom according to Chris Ducker:

Introduction

In this episode Chris Ducker takes a deep dive into his book, Virtual Freedom, where he provides the ultimate resource necessary for building a business with the help of virtual employees.

In his book, Ducker gives you a step-by-step guide to figure out the jobs you should outsource along with hiring, training, motivating, and managing virtual assistants. The goal of the book is to show you how to buy more time, become more productive, and build your business through virtual assistants.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs that have outgrown their daily tasks, are thinking about hiring other people, and are operating with a small, limited budget.

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:51)

I don’t think there are too many books out there that really cover this topic properly. There are a few books that mention outsourcing but they failed to actually show you how to do it. This is your essential guide on finding, hiring, training, managing and working with virtual staff to help you run, support and grow your business.

The Best Way To Engage (6:10)

You can jump in and out but it’s always best to read straight through.

The Reader’s Takeaway (15:52)

Without a doubt it would be the 3 list to freedom exercise. The reason why this is the one thing that I would want people to take away from the book and take real action on is because it changed my life.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (7:20)

In the introduction of the book we talk about my personal burn out story where I hit burn out after working 16 hours a day for three to four years. I was building my business and had about 100 employees at the time and I hit a brick wall. It became very, very evident to me that I was no longer running my business, my business was running me. We put a plan in place by the end of 2010 to remove myself from the business and become a virtual CEO. Which is what we achieved and I have been doing it ever since. I only work four days a week, I have a three day weekend and I work five to six hours a day maximum. It wasn’t always like this so in the book I talk about my struggle and my demons in regards to that micromanagement and superhero syndrome. From there we set about helping the reader overcome their superhero syndrome that’s within them.

Section one of the book is all about finding and hiring virtual staff. We go through everything from being very real and mentioning the facts that although we would love to just hire one person to do everything in our business, it’s not possible. You have got to hire for the role not for the tasks. And then we start off the entire book by introducing our 3 lists to freedom. The first list is a list of all the things that you hate doing every day. The second list is a list of all the things that you struggle doing and the third list is all the things that as an entrepreneur you feel like you shouldn’t be doing

In section two we go through the actual training of your virtual staff.

Section three is all about managing your VA and we go through all the different types of VA roles and how to manage them properly. We talk about the difference between tasks and projects and how they are managed differently.

Section four is about going overseas or staying local and the pros and cons of doing that.

Section five is my favorite section of the entire book because it starts to really level up everything you are doing from an entrepreneurial perspective and building a real team.

We wrap up with a bonus section where I talk about the most frequently committed mistakes by entrepreneurs when they start building virtual teams and how to avoid those as well.

Notable Quotes From The Book (20:46)

“Work on your business and don’t be trapped working inside your business.” – Chris Ducker

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:33)

I am originally from London in the UK. I am a sales and marketing guy and was in the publishing business for a long time over there. I came over to the Philippines to deep dive into the outsourcing world in 2000. In 2004 I set up my first business and sold that in 2008. After that I dipped back into the 9 to 5 for almost two years and then in 2008 I decided to go ahead and start that entrepreneurial journey again which I’ve been on ever since. We now have almost 300 employees and are a multi seven figure business annually. I have a blog, a podcast and speak as well.

I have been involved in the outsourcing business for a long time and particularly since the 4 hour work week came out I have become more active online. It had become very evident to me that there were a lot of people in the same space claiming to be gurus that really had no idea what they were talking about. There were so many false truths being pushed out on the internet that it was actually starting to cause me problems in my business. I wanted to write those wrongs that were everywhere online and provide a resource and an essential guide to finding, hiring, managing and working with virtual staff to build your business.

A summary of things you should know about The Suitcase Entrepreneur according to Natalie Sisson:

Introduction

In this episode Natalie Sisson takes a deep dive into her book, The Suitcase Entrepreneur where she reveals the ups and downs of traveling while running a business.

In her book Sisson takes you through 3 different acts where you will learn about freedom and adventure, how to build an online business you can run from anywhere, and how to live out of a suitcase.

This book is perfect for the entrepreneur who wants to choose their own adventure in order to do whatever they want in life including traveling the world.

The Book’s Unique Quality (2:19)

I think there are a lot of books about making money online and travel books but I really have become known as a person who gives practical and inspirational advice on exactly how to do this for yourself. I’ve made it practical for people who have hit their sweet spot and want to turn it into a business they can run from anywhere. I also provide real life practical examples and case studies of other people doing it and it’s very much based on evidence and application throughout.

The Best Way To Engage (3:09)

I explain in my introduction where you should start based on where you’re at in your career/life. I do feel the reader can jump in and out and it’s been called a bible because people have bookmarked it for various stages of where they are at.

The Reader’s Takeaway (13:31)

It’s one of my favorite quotes which is a principle of Yoda…”Do. Or do not. There is no try.” I have lived my life by this principle and I feel it comes across throughout my whole book. Just take action. It can’t wait for tomorrow, do whatever you have been putting off now because tomorrow may never come.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (5:05)

In a nutshell it is broken up into three Acts and it is perfect for people who want to choose their own adventure. It’s when the reader is at a point in their life where they want to start their own business that allows them to do whatever they want in life. It sounds like a big promise but I truly believe that you get to live life on your own terms and that’s what this book takes you through.

Act One is all about welcoming you into the new world of digital nomads and what that means. What freedom and adventure in life really is and whether you’re cut out for it because it’s not for everybody. I give you four things you need to be free and tell you real case stories of other people living life on their own terms.

Act Two is about building an online business you can take anywhere, the future of work and becoming a citizen of the world. People always ask me what becoming a citizen of the world looks like and how I set up my business and run it from anywhere. I explain the legal implications, how to do banking and show you the best systems and online tools to run your business.

Act Three is about how to become a suitcase entrepreneur. I know nobody really wants to live out of a suitcase like me but I show you how to become a pro at being homeless, deciding on where you want to travel and what you should actually pack. I also give travel hacking tips.

I feel like there is something for everybody depending on their stage of where they are at in business and life. The biggest thing that the book talks about is the reality of this. A lot of people sugarcoat the lifestyle of running your own business and being able to take it anywhere. I really try to give you the honest look of why this is an amazing lifestyle to lead, when you get to choose how you want to live life on your own terms but also the realities of it. But also the fact that people who are living conventional lifestyles may not agree with what you’re doing, they might not understand it. You might feel lonely from time to time and that’s a big thing that I didn’t consider when I started out running my blog which turned into a business. This is where you will need mentors, advice and masterminds of supportive people. Running a business is one thing and making it successful requires a lot of effort initially and it’s a huge challenge that is not for everybody but trying to do that while you’re traveling the world is even more challenging. There are all sorts of ways for living life on your own terms, it doesn’t have to be my way or the highway but you do need to be prepared mentally and physically for what you’re going to encounter because it is an adventure. I tell people to take their own path and route based on their sweet spot which is what you’re really good at, what you enjoy doing and what people will pay you for.

Notable Quotes From The Book (14:34)

“You can lead a contented life without taking risks but you’ll be unlikely to live a truly, wildly, happy one, if you don’t.” – Colin Wright

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:43)

I have been traveling and living out of my suitcase for four full years now. I have no home and am the suitcase entrepreneur. I love to create a ton of freedom and adventure in my life and those of others. I’ve build a brand and a business based around doing that and helping people build profitable businesses they can run from anywhere.

I have been doing this for such a long time now and I felt I finally had a book in me to write about. I wanted to share my journey and how people have been doing this for themselves, building crazy awesome lifestyles but also very successful businesses, in a book format. I’ve always wanted to write a book and I finally felt I had enough knowledge and expertise to share. I am very much action focused and that’s what I wanted my book to be, the most practical guide for creating a business you love from anywhere.

A summary of things you should know about Lifestyle Entrepreneur according to Jesse Krieger

Introduction

In this episode Wade meets with Jesse Krieger, author of Lifestyle Entrepreneur. If you are an entrepreneur that that believes in the motto “passion before profit” or are at a battle between the style of entrepreneur that describes you then “Lifestyle Entrepreneur” is for you.

The Book’s Unique Quality

I’ve founded or co-founded over 5 companies, helped dozens of Entrepreneurs start businesses and so I bring a firsthand perspective from being “in the trenches” at any given time working on the starting and the launch or growth of 2 or 3 business. So I’d like to think that I know what I’m talking about and I’m speaking from experience. It’s a collection of firsthand account stories of being in different lifestyle context mixed with how-tos and frame works that readers can use to put into practice in their own life and businesses.

The Reader’s Takeaway

The one thing I would want a reader to take away from this book is that you can go from not believing that this is possible for your life to firmly, fully believing that you have agency to create the lifestyle that you want to build a business based on your interests and passions. If there is just one thing that you can take away is that this is possible, it’s been done, that this is both my life and many of my closest friends’ lifestyles. So opening a door into a new way of business and proving it’s possible.

A Deep Dive Into The Book

I take you right into being in the middle of a book tour in Malaysia and literally hiking in the jungles of Borneo one day and then speaking on stages in front of 100 people the next day. It starts with a sweeping overview of how I see the world changing today, specifically with the ability to hire and manage teams from anywhere in the world and the ability to work anywhere in the world with a laptop and internet connection. By the time you are a third of the way through the book, the reader should have a lot more clarity on not only what’s possible but what’s the ideal case for them. It allows specificity for the reading without telling people what they should do, rather giving the opportunity for the reading to discover and empowering them to think bigger within the context of what’s possible in this day and age. As we get closer to the end I give very specific recommendations on tools, software to use and ways to set up a workflow. By the time you get to the end of the book my goals is that the reading has an expanded view of what’s possible in life and business and now has the tools, resources, next steps and action plans to make it real.

Notable Quotes From The Book

“When you know what you want, it becomes clear what must be done, as you do eventually you come to be and that is your identity.” – Jesse Krieger

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author

My inspiration is the result of not knowing how to answer the question ‘what do you do’ because it changed frequently. It started as a shorter piece but as I was writing and got additional inspiration, I decided to expand it out and do a full book that’s a mix of how to and stories/strategies for success as well as some featured lifestyle entrepreneurs that also embody this ethos; to be able to travel freely and frequently, to live a life of passion and purpose.
