A summary of things you should know about YouthNation according to Matt Britton:

Introduction

In this episode Matt Britton gives an in-depth preview of his book, YouthNation, where he shows what it takes to stay connected, agile, authentic, and relevant in today’s marketplace.

In his book Britton provides an effective marketing plan with practical advice and strategies for keeping your business brand relevant to the new economy of youth-driven cultures. The goal of the book is to teach you how to use psychographics to target younger markets, craft a brand story that will attract new target markets, build highly engaging online communities, and stay ahead of the competition.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who run a business that deserves the attention of millennials, but are having difficulty marketing, hiring, and communicating with the younger generation.

The Book’s Unique Quality (2:51)

I think that I’ve had a very unique experience in spending a lot of time in the board rooms of major corporate marketers and because of that I’ve been able to understand their challenges and needs. I’ve also spent a whole lot of time on college campuses, nightclubs, and places where this culture is really being built, and so I think the experiences I’ve had within being on both sides really has led to an invaluable resource.

The Best Way To Engage (3:35)

I think every chapter provides a unique set of value in its own way and so the reader can go in and look at individual chapters and be able to get an understanding of the key principles. The front half of the book is written about the cultural changes that are being driven by millennials and the back half of the book talks about the marketing and advertising implications to that. So I think the reader can just look at the front part or back part depending on where they are looking to gain the most insights.

The Reader’s Takeaway (13:13)

I would want it to be that anybody who wants to succeed in business right now really needs to fully understand and embrace youth culture to do so. They need to understand that young people are changing the world and the decisions and lifestyle habits are the ones that are disrupting every industry. And in order for them to succeed they need to understand what’s going on with young people and stop ignoring it.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (4:18)

There is massive change going on now in the business landscape and it’s being driven by cultural changes in our population. Right now the big changes are being made not by decisions made in the boardrooms but by movements that are happening on the sidewalks by young, empowered millennials that are leveraging technology and social media to really change the world. These disruptions are causing changes in all corners of our economy and business world and I’ve broken them down to different principles which need to be understood by businesses and understood by marketers in order for them to succeed.

The first major changes that I’ve written about in the book I call from status symbol to status update and that’s basically talking about how millennials and the driving consumer is much more consumed than obsessed with experiences verses the possession and material items. So retailers and providers of goods really need to change the way they come to market and not so much focus on unique selling proposition of their products but of the experiences and stories that can be told from the consumption of their products and services.

I talk about changes in music and popular culture and the huge explosion of outdoor festivals driven by popularity in electronic dance music and how electronic dance music is a massive trend that’s not going away anytime soon and how brands can jump on it.

I talk about since the shift is moving away from the consumption of physical items to the consumption of experiences; young consumers are now focusing on the access of good verses the ownership of good. So it’s the rental or sharing economy and what does that mean and what companies have really thrived by creating marketplaces for the items instead of just traditional retail models.

I also talk about microeconomic changes that are being driven by millennials such as them not wanting to move to the suburbs and instead staying in major cities and the implications for them staying in the cities in terms of them being about to transact with one another. I talk about careers and the evolutions of careers and what millennials want from them.

I talk about the power of the crowd and how the crowd is an invaluable resource for companies that want to source best in class thinking and wisdom.
Lastly I talk about what all these changes mean to the future of marketing and advertising. I stay with television and how the television model with the adoption of all these new technologies is starting to become broken and how companies that have relied on the age old television model really need to reinvent themselves.

I talk about some of the new ways, since we can’t rely on television as much anymore, to reach consumers such as the creation of content and the value of storytelling. I talk about how brands can use data, the social and interest graph, and social media data to be able to actively target consumers.

Lastly I talk about the importance of people needing to be brands and personifying their brands.

My book is really a holistic view of all these changes that are going on and what I found in talking all over the world is that there is such a disconnect. Things that are sort of household names and household habits of millennials who are changing the world are still so out of reach and largely misunderstood by business decision makers and I am hoping this book provides a great resource to tie it all together.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 04:18

Notable Quotes From The Book (13:55)

“Experience is the new currency” – Matt Britton

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:07)

I am the founder and CEO of MRY which is an advertising agency focusing on digital and social technology to really help brands break through and be remarkable with their consumer.

I work with a lot of major corporate marketers and what I found over and over again with big brands is that there seems to be a major disconnect behind their knowledge of the marketplace as they exist today and really what’s going on in terms of the disruption and change that’s already being driven by youth. For me the book is really meant to be a roadmap for marketers and business decision makers to understand how to navigate the complex changes that are brought about by these youths driving the economy to ensure they are not left in the dust.

A summary of things you should know about Unstoppable Entrepreneurship according to Ilkka Lavas:

Introduction

In this episode Ilkka Lavas takes a deep dive into his book, Unstoppable Entrepreneurship where he shares his experience on what makes an entrepreneur unstoppable.

In his book, Lavas reveals over 18 years of experience as an entrepreneur and addresses the successes, failures, and tactics that took him from a 17 year old web designer to a 35 year old serial entrepreneur. The goal of the book is to teach you new ways to be successful, overcome hurdles, take your business to the top in the digital age we live in today.

This book is perfect for aspiring entrepreneurs who are in the early stages of startup development and are learning from the success stories of experienced entrepreneurs.

The Book’s Unique Quality (2:55)

If you read management or self-help tip books they all are around the same topics about what makes you successful and how you set your goals. In my book I open with how to become unstoppable and I also share my biggest lessons and failures along the way.

The Best Way To Engage (4:02)

The tips and chapters in the book are fairly easy to read. Many of my readers have said that they read this book in two hours.

The Reader’s Takeaway (9:11)

As an entrepreneur one of my favorite ideas is that if you want to be successful you must understand that you have to be successful every day. I believe that we shouldn’t be waiting for that one day when we become successful; we should be living for the moment.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (4:48)

The book starts from 12 years ago when I was 23 years old and I had 17 people working for my company. The first chapter is about never giving up. When the IT bubble burst my company’s volume of orders fell and we had a serious cash flow crisis. Things became much less pleasant, less fun and exciting. I couldn’t sleep because I was worried how I could pay salaries for my employees. I had to make the choice to either file my company for bankruptcy or try and continue the business. I didn’t want to give up so I started thinking about what the worst thing was that could happen to me if I failed trying to save this company.

I realized that if I failed or didn’t even try saving the company the worst case scenario was that my company would go bankrupt. I calculated that I could save the company by downsizing the amount of employees and by handling all the sold and still open cases as well. So I called the tax officers and talked about the payment terms and they took some of our office furniture as a payment of the bills. With a heavy heart I had to lay off 12 people including some very close friends. After not paying my own salary for many months the challenge in downsizing finally ended 14 months later when I paid my last unpaid tax payment. I was exhausted but I didn’t give up and I survived my first big business challenge.

Chapter two is about the things that make you unstoppable.

Chapter three is about reflecting your life habits. It’s very important to know what your strengths and weaknesses are in life.

Chapter four is about managing your own self. You must manage yourself or someone else will.

Chapter five is about how to create new competitive advantages.

The biggest idea of my book is how to go from a state of crisis to a state of success.

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:59)

I am 35 years old and a serial entrepreneur. I am involved with 10 companies and I have around 100 people working in my companies. I started my first startup when I was 17 years old so half of my life I have spent as an entrepreneur.

I have been teaching entrepreneurs here in Finland for the last 10 years. I wrote my first book seven years ago about positive things about entrepreneurship. Since then I have been growing my businesses based on that book and because of that I now have many successful companies. I wanted to write down the principles and management tips that I have learned in my life as an entrepreneur. I have been teaching myself about being unstoppable and this book will help others do the same.

In today’s world entrepreneurship is all about the process and being driven. A lot of books on this topic are from authors who are at the end of their journey. In this book we are just in the middle of our journey and explain to you what leads people to live a purpose driven life. In the book we talk about entrepreneurship as a mindset and you can have a mindset of an entrepreneur even if you won’t have a business. We invite you to not only read the book but also play the game as you read it.

The Best Way To Engage (11:00)

This is a book that is written with fun in mind so each chapter is its own bite size playable lesson. You can read a chapter here or there to get different takeaways to apply to your life or you can read the entire book.

The Reader’s Takeaway (33:28)

Simcha – Life is right now. You have everything you possibly need at your fingertips as long as you have the right mindset of how you see things.

Ronen – I advise people to take the win to win concept. Understand that everyone can win, because everyone is playing their own game and it’s not a competition. This is your life and you’re on this planet because you have a very specific purpose and no one else can do it for you.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (12:25)

We open up with the analogy that we have been living in a great world up until now. All of the sudden you take a moment of thoughtfulness and mindfulness to climb the tallest mountain and when you do, you look out and see that there is another mountain. Another island a little further away that has very similar technology but you’re able to get better results, you go further, smarter, faster and better. The only reason you go further, smarter, faster and get better is because you think differently about it. Our goal in the book is to build the bridge that takes people from the old island to the new island, the smarter island of the new entrepreneurs.

Ronen opens up where he shares his personal journey of coming up with this idea of creating a FreshBiz game, a game that trains people on multidimensional winning. Winning through collaboration as opposed to all the old school games that all of us have been brought up playing that were based on competition. We think that you have to kill or be killing and so often we bring that mindset to school, business and relationships and all of the sudden we end up damaging people because we think that life is one massive competition. We need to realize that the world has changed completely and in the new shared economy every one of us can all win our own game, we all have unlimited resources at our fingertips. Ronen shares his personal story which involves him actually having to sell his house to print and produce the first thousand games. And even though it was challenging, he explains why it wasn’t a very scary risk for him.

We talk about the life hackers and the games. When we talk about hackers we don’t mean people who are illegally breaking into programs, we mean people who are literally hacking life, business or marketing and are able to get better results while accomplishing things that most people ordinarily couldn’t accomplish.

We also talk about the evolution of entrepreneurship, why it’s changing and how it’s possible. We take the readers through our FreshBiz language. We talk about the win to win power which just means a higher winning for everyone, winning in many dimensions and not just the dimension of money. In today’s world we don’t want to just win the money game, we also want to win the relationship and business game.
After that we talk about what we call action card. Action cards in the game of FreshBiz are unique abilities and talents. It’s important to know how to identify each action card in life and how to use them. Action cards are a way of opening up the distinction that we have tremendous amount of things at our fingertips and we need to get really good at assessing what they are.

One of the chapters in the book is called Red and Green titles. Red titles are mandatory, they are actions that you must take and green titles are optional, things that you can do. An example of a red title in life is you must pay taxes. An example for a green title in life is going to college. We take people through the process of starting to distinguish for themselves what really is optional and what is mandatory.

Smart Business is another chapter in the book and is one of the more powerful chapters. We talk about how it takes three things to be considered a smart business. The first thing is it has to meet your lifestyle. It is really important that you create something that is sustainable and really allows you to flourish. The second thing is it has to be win to the win power, it’s got to have multidimensional winning. If your clients are winning but you are losing, that doesn’t work. The third thing that you have to have to be considered a smart business is it has to be purpose driven. Do something not just because it makes money but because it is an extension of who you’re meant to be in the world.

The All-In chapter is about becoming someone who you are willing to go All-In for.

Another chapter is called You Already Won the Game. It is important that people have a context for when they do things in their life, to do it from a place of confidence. When someone has already played the game a few times and sits down the play it again, they already know that they are capable of winning. Knowing that you can already win a game that you are about to play brings confidence and fluidity. This allows you to have fun, be creative and invite others to play it. We have so many resources and so many free sources that we need to start using.

The last chapter of the book talks about solving the world’s greatest problems. This chapter is basically about how the new entrepreneurs can be a major step forward in solving these problems. When I talk about entrepreneurs I am not saying that in order to be one you must have started or be starting a business. Entrepreneurship is for people who want to play life in a different way.

Notable Quotes From The Book (35:18)

“Education is teaching our children to desire the right things.” – Plato

“The rat race is over and the era of new entrepreneurial thinking is here.” – Ronen Gafni

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (4:05)

My name is Ronen Gafni, I am 42 years old, have two kids and live in Israel. I developed a game called FreshBiz, it’s the game for development of independent real thinking. It’s been a journey for the past 10 years. Simcha and I have been touring the globe playing the game with over 20 thousand people from 20 different countries bringing the message of a new mindset towards business and entrepreneurship.

My name is Simcha Gluck. I’m the Chief Fun Officer of Fresh Biz, I co-author the book with Ronen and I’ve been a serial entrepreneur since I was 20 years old and am currently 35. I am originally from New York but now live in Israel with my wife.

While traveling and training entrepreneurs all over the world in different communities we started to see that entire face of what entrepreneurship has typically been over the past 10, 50 or 100 years has completely changed. It was important to us to write a book that features a new way of looking at things and living in the new shared economy that we are in. That is the inspiration for The New Entrepreneurz, the new people who literally are changing the way they play life one game at a time.

The Art of Shouting Quietly: A Guide to Self-Promotion for Introverts and Other Quiet Souls by Pete Mosley

The Art Of Shouting Quietly is about helping people name the beasts that hold them back – and to systematically engage with and overcome them.

This book illustrates how this can be done – with insights into what the blocks actually are, how to take responsibility for them, and how to stop blaming others for your own lack of progress. Every reader, I’m sure, will find something in the content that they will relate strongly to in respect of the obstacles and challenges in their own life.
With a solid foundation beneath it, however, confidence becomes significantly harder to rock and easier to recover when it is shaken. These foundations have many components – many more than I list here – but here are the most important ones.

    Belief in yourself.

Understanding your place in the world – and what you were put on the planet to do.

Being true to yourself and your values.

Knowing that you have the power and freedom to shape your own sense of what is (and is not) possible.

Having a strong sense of plan and purpose.

    Knowing where your support lies.

Developing the skill of asking for help in a structured way and understanding that this is not a sign of weakness.

Knowing how to show up and share your gift in a way that sits comfortably with your values and mindset.

Traction: A Startup Guide to Getting Customers by Gabriel Weinberg and Justin Mares

The number one traction mistake founders and employees make is not dedicating as much time to developing traction as they do developing product. This shortsighted approach has startups eventually trying random tactics — some ads, a blog post or two — in an unstructured way that will most likely fail.

We developed our traction framework called Bullseye with the help of the founders behind several of the biggest companies and organizations in the world like Jimmy Wales (Wikipedia), Alexis Ohanian (Reddit), Paul English (Kayak.com) and Alex Pachikov (Evernote). We interviewed over forty successful founders and researched countless more traction stories — pulling out the repeatable tactics and strategies they used to get traction.

Ben Arment’s Dream Year is a powerful launching pad for that mental reboot. Start here.” —Steven Pressfield, author of The War of Art, Do the Work, and The Legend of Bagger Vance
