A summary of things you should know about Thoughts Are Things according to Greg S. Reid:

Introduction

In this episode, bestselling author and success leader, Greg Reid takes a deep dive into his book Thoughts Are Things where he and his co-author, Bob Proctor, reveal the true mindsets that determine where a person will be successful.

In their book Reid and Proctor interview professionals to dissect the psychological science of thought and how successful people think differently from others who are unable to reach their potential. The goal of the book is to teach you how to manipulate your thoughts, what kinds of thoughts will make you wealthy, and how thinking is significant to achieve a meaningful life.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who admire the works of Napoleon Hill and are ready to change everything about their lives in order to control their actions when it comes to wealth and success.

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:31)

Thought Are Things is not necessarily the truth and we come right out and say it. The reality is it’s thought backed by massive action that becomes things. If thoughts were things I’d be a pizza because I am starving and thinking about pizza. You got to think it, you got to feel it, but ultimately you got to do it.

The Best Way To Engage (5:36)

You can literally open up any chapter and start fresh.

The Reader’s Takeaway (16:14)

One of the greatest things that people did was to be very careful of the people they surrounded themselves with. And the thoughts that you put into your head are a direct proportion of the people you’re hanging out with. So it’s important to seek counsel and not people’s opinions. It’s important also to have many mentors in our life.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (7:30)

To write the book we sat down with amazing human beings and found out exactly how their thoughts dictated where they are today.

Thoughts backed by massive action become true reality. One of the big takeaways is about the subconscious mind where you have no control of what it is. One thing that kept popping up was fear – fear is one of the biggest driving things that hold us back and most of it is manmade fear. We spend 90% of our time worrying about 10% that really happens. And fear is a great mechanism and it files away emotional pain, regret, and embarrassment and that’s why if we fail at something we are reluctant to try it again. The subconscious mind pulls from that memory to keep us safe and away from experiencing that same outcome. Sometimes we have to trick that subconscious mind and the way that people do that is they put more positive on top of that negative. Sometimes thoughts are important but you also have to take necessary actions and course directions to make your dreams a reality. Successful people seek counsel and failures listen to opinion. And the difference is that opinion is based on ignorance, lack of knowledge and inexperience, and counsel is based on wisdom, knowledge, and mentorship. If we would spend our daily lives only seeking and listening to counsel and ignoring people’s opinions, that’s the day your life would change.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 07:30

Notable Quotes From The Book (17:55)

“Fears only enemy is action in the absence of faith.” – Greg Reid

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:47)

I live in San Diego, California with you wife and my two year old son. I get to write books, make movies, travel the world, and meet some of the most influential people of our time and then tell their stories.

To start with I did Thoughts Are Things with a legendary author named Bob Proctor and this book is the very first one in the Napoleon Hill Think and Grow Rich series. The whole concept is if you ever read Think and Grow Rich, the first three words are Thoughts Are Things. Bob and I decided to take those three words and expand on them and from there we created this gem that people are loving national wide.

Greg Reid is the modern voice for inspiration and motivation. He is a best-selling author, a motivational speaker, and a highly acclaimed filmmaker. He has published over 45 books, despite claiming that he isn’t a writer, including Three Feet From Gold which is inspired by the original landmark seller Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. Greg Reid has learned to overcome his weaknesses to find success. Here are five important lessons that any entrepreneur can learn from his life in order to find their own success.

1. Work Your Strengths, Hire Your Weaknesses

Chances are, if you’re starting your own business you’ve already spent a bit of time figuring out what your strengths are. Be brutally honest in this process. It’s not shameful to admit that there are some things that just don’t come easily to you. Focus on the things that do fall under your natural abilities. There’s no reason for you to pay someone else good money to do something that you are perfectly capable of doing yourself.

Likewise, there’s no reason for you to spend a lot of time trying to achieve skills that you can hire out. Hire quality employees whose strengths match up with your weaknesses. People might say that birds of a feather flock together, but we’re looking for more of an opposites attract approach here. Find someone who can fill in the gaps in your skill set. Together, you’ll form an unstoppable team.

2. Don’t Quit

Perseverance is the most important quality in an entrepreneur. In the early days, there will be setbacks. There will probably be setbacks in the later days, too. Some of these might feel like catastrophic failures, but you can recover from anything that life hits you with. It’s okay to take a step back to get yourself together after an unexpected blow, but then get right back into the game.

You never know how close you are to success until you get there. Holding on just one more month, week, or even day could be the difference between closing your doors and finding the answer to your biggest problem. A new investor could be right around the corner. Hold out for him to get there.

3. Be Committed

Most people will tell you to go into a business in a field that interests you. But the fact is, being interested isn’t enough. You have to be committed. Most people have a variety of interests. Those are your hobbies. Those are the things that you do when you find yourself with some free time. That’s what you do when you’re in the mood and it sounds found. But a business isn’t a hobby, it’s a commitment. You make time for your business, which means some things are going to have to take a backseat. You take care of your business no matter what mood you’re in, even when it’s anything but fun.

Interest is what gets you to the office the first couple weeks when everything is new and exciting. Commitment is what gets you to the office an hour early to go over the books even though your kids kept you up all night. Don’t just be interested. Be committed.

4. Seek Wise Counsel

Everybody has an opinion. And most of those people will let you know that opinion, whether you asked for it or not. It’s certainly good to take advice wherever you can find it, but consider the source. Don’t let your family talk you out of your dream because they’re concerned about what it will do to you if your business doesn’t make it. Nod, smile politely, and don’t pay any attention to the know it all who’s convinced that he hold the answers to all of the universe’s questions. To run a successful business, you don’t need the opinion of everyone who walks through your door. You need sound advice from people who know what they’re talking about.

Successful people seek out counsel from experts in their field. Spend a lot of time networking. Talk to people who own businesses in the same area as you. Talk to people who own the same type of business on the other side of the world. Pick their brains for what worked and what didn’t work. As important as it is for your business to stand out, don’t feel like you need to reinvent the wheel just to be different. Listen to those who have experience in your field.

5. Turn Your Obstacles into Opportunities

No obstacle has the power to stop you. It might delay you, will certainly force you to reevaluate and perhaps change your approach, but an obstacle is not the end of the road. Keep this in mind whenever you hit a stumbling block and you will blast right through whatever is in your path. Instead of stopping at an obstacle, take this opportunity to strengthen your resolve. Remember to be committed. An obstacle is the perfect opportunity to test that committed. The interested walk away from an obstacle. The committed charge right at it.

An obstacle is also an opportunity to try new things. Maybe you’ve had a crazy idea floating around in the back of your head that you never would have tried with smooth sailing. But since you have to change your course anyways, you might as well give it a shot, right? Some of your best ideas may be inspired by spur of the moment desperation. Embrace the opportunities that obstacles present and you will find yourself on the path to success.

A summary of things you should know about Three Feet From Gold according to Greg S. Reid

Introduction

In this episode Greg Reid shares with us the inspiring story of how he was given the rare opportunity to carry on the legacy of Think and Grow Rich by Andrew Carnegie. In Reid’s book, Three Feet From Gold, he elaborates on the first chapter from Think and Grow Rich providing you with a deep dive into what modern day thought leaders do when coping with struggle and ultimately coming out on top. Three Feet From Gold is the perfect fit for a thought leader, business owner, or entrepreneur who love focusing on the end game of success, but struggle to realize and overcome the challenges that lead to victory.

The Book’s Unique Quality

The whole concept was so many people always focus on the end but they don’t realize that first there is a dream and then there is a challenge which leads to the victory. Unfortunately the majority of everyone quits in the challenge. This book was a deep dive into what people did to persevere when the going got tough. I wanted to talk to modern day thought leaders to find out how they coped with their situation so that they could come out on top.

The Reader’s Takeaway

You have to have Passion, talent, take action, association and faith; chances are you have found something that works for you. I have realized that when people find what is important to them, that’s where things move. If you are following someone else’s dream chances are you will fall short. If you follow someone else’s passion, chances are it’s not yours so you’ll give up. It’s the people that find their own success equation and do it all out; those are the people that truly live a purposed filled life.

A Deep Dive Into The Book

The story comes from R. U. Darby, the gold miner who gave up three feet away from the largest strike in history. It reminded me that most people quit when the going gets tough. So I went on this mission to meet amazing people and the very first person that the Napoleon Hill foundation asked me to reach out to was a guy named Dave Liniger and people don’t know his name but you’ll know his business. I asked Dave if he wanted to quit when he was getting started in real estate back in 1970 and he said every day.

He said it was so bad for two years that every phone call that came in was from a bill collector. The third year it got so bad he was sent to jail and called a fraud and a liar. I asked him what he did and he said he took his attitude from trying to prove everyone else wrong and do something more important just to prove he was right. He called the bill collectors back and told them he didn’t have all the money but he had $50. He sent it to them with a promise that he wasn’t going to quit and asked them to not give up on him. He called every bill collector until the fourth year someone believe in him, bought the first business and that’s called RE/MAX Real Estate Corporation. The moral is how many times have we or someone we know given up right before the miracle happens. I went and met with the president of NASCAR, Mrs. Fields Cookies and the guy building the elevator to space and I asked them all how they avoided from keeping themselves from talking themselves out of the dream. One of the greatest wisdoms came from a guy name John Schwarz who invented String Theory. For ten years everyone said he was crazy and out of his mind but he figured it out. When I asked him why he didn’t quit when everyone else thought he was crazy, he said it’s because he knew he was right. He said the secret of success is to never let another person talk you out of your dream. He said that if you want to be successful, successful people seek counsel and failures listen to opinions. Opinion is based on ignorance, lack of knowledge and unexperienced. Counsel is based on wisdom, knowledge and mentorship. John Schwarz said if we would spend our daily lives only seeking counsel and ignoring people’s opinion, that’s the day your life would change.

The whole idea of writing this book was to help everyday people put themselves in this circumstance and when you’re flipping through the pages you realize you are not alone. Each and every person we talk to, you see yourself in their circumstance saying if they did it, you can too.

Notable Quotes From The Book

“All I want in life is to give my life my all.” – Greg S. Reid

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author

I’m an author, speaker and filmmaker in San Diego, California. I have been married for about five years and have a two year old kid which is the pride and joy of my life.

In 1908 Napoleon Hill was given a letter of recommendation from the riches guy in the world, Andrew Carnegie, to go meet his friends to create the first ever formula for success, which is known as Think and Grow Rich. One hundred years later in 2008 the president, CEO and family of Napoleon Hill foundation wrote a very similar letter and they gifted it to me. Napoleons family gave me an opportunity to help carry on and modernize the teachings of the 20th bestselling book in history. The whole concept was could I go out and write a book based on the first chapter of Think and Grow Rich about not giving up when you’re just three feet away from gold.
