A summary of things you should know about Free Agent according to Katy Tynan:

Introduction

In this episode Katy Tynan takes a deep dive into her book, Free Agent, where she reveals what it takes to be successful in the business of independent contacting and freelance work.

In her book Tynan provides actionable steps, case studies, and tools you will need to help you transition from a full-time employee to your own independent freelance practice. The goal of the book is to teach you how to become an in-demand resource, understand the business of freelancing, how to get your independent business off the ground, and how to avoid the common pitfalls of freelancing.

This book is perfect for aspiring entrepreneurs who have a special set of skills and are interested in leaving their full-time job in order to start monetizing their skillsets independently.

The Book’s Unique Quality (4:05)

When I approach writing my feeling is that my reader is somebody that wants to be able to get right to the point and find the information they are looking for. And so when I wrote this book I wanted to make sure it was very practical, that it was actionable, and that somebody could pick it up and get exactly what they need out of it. The second thing that I feel is different about this book is it’s directed at people who are looking to get into this as a career path.

The Best Way To Engage (5:58)

If you are an independent professional and you have a problem you can flip right to the chapter you need.

The Reader’s Takeaway (14:08)

What I want for people when they read this book is to be able to say I can do this. If you have a passion, skill, and desire to work this way you can.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (8:17)

I divided the book into three sections and the reason for that is because I feel like from a logical perspective there are three reasons why someone would pick up a book like this. So the very first section is where we talk about the emerging trend of this free agent labor force. Who are the people that are doing this? Why are we talking about the free agent force and where did it come from? It’s fascinating to me how these trends arise and one of the things I talk about is the transition from pension plans. In the first two chapters I dove into that backdrop which I think is important for a lot of people who are wondering how and why this freelancing free agent trend came to be and why we are working the way we are working. And also to talk about the fact that this is a long-term thing. I expect that people are going to continue to work independently for the long term and that it’s a career path that a lot of people can follow.

Section two is very practical for people who want to get started and transition from being an employee to being self-employed. This section includes everything that you can possibly think of for how to set up your business, what you need from a professional team perspective, what you need for a corporate structure, and how you are going to pay your taxes. I think what holds people back from pursuing this as a career path is that feeling that they don’t know what questions to ask, who to call, or what structures and mechanics they need in place. So this section is all about the practical aspects of getting setup as an independent professional. It includes inks, resources, practical information, and case studies and stories of people who have made this transition themselves.

The third section of the book is about strategies for long-term success as an independent professional. Another chapter in this section is probably the most important and it’s about balancing independent work and life.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 08:17

Notable Quotes From The Book (15:02)

“It’s so hard when you are the one who is responsible for everything and yet it’s so rewarding when you are the one who is responsible for everything.” –Chris Brogan

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:35)

I’m an author, speaker, and entrepreneur. I started my career in tech and helping people understand how technology could work for them. But really what I found was that I love people, I love working with people, and I love helping people solve problems and figure things out. So that’s how I got started working independently as I just love going around and meeting people and finding ways that we can work together and solve problems.

The inspiration for me to pursue the path of becoming an independent professional came about six years ago and then what I found is it’s tough to do. We don’t teach people in school how to pursue this career path and so I felt like there needed to be more resources, more conversation, and more opportunity for people to understand what this path looks like.

Is it a good idea to quit your job and chase your dream of being an entrepreneur? Well, there are numerous reasons that tell you not be so foolish as to quit a job that pays you well and helps you live the lifestyle you do and go down the road of uncertainty. But life is too short not to live it to the fullest either!

Need a few good reasons to quit your job and start on your own? Here are 7 that will help:

1) You are stuck.

If you feel that you work, but you never achieve anything, it may be a good reason to quit. Sometimes you get too comfortable in a job to notice that you are stuck in stagnant waters. Do you accomplish anything? Do you make an impact? Do you feel that you have a purpose? If you answered no to any of these, it’s time to move on.

2) You have lost passion.

Do you wake up every day and think – why do I need to go to work? Some parts of your job are sure to suck. But if there are no parts that you look forward to (it doesn’t necessarily have to be fun, it can be motivating, challenging, stimulating, or anything else), it isn’t really the best opportunity for you.

3) Your pay doesn’t reflect your work.

You put in your best at work. But if you are just working to build a career for your boss, it won’t amount to anything in the long run. Your pay including the perks and benefits you get as well as the way it boosts your career matter; and if it doesn’t reflect how much you put in at your job, it’s no good.

4) You want to do what you love.

Sometimes, the job you want isn’t even there; you need to create it. And what better way to do it than to leave your job and start on your business? So, whether you want to write a book, start an online handmade jewelry store, or offer after party cleaning service, the best time to do it is now!

5) You need flexibility.

Certain circumstances may make it necessary to have a flexible schedule; and a regular job may not be able to offer you that opportunity. When J. T. O’Donnell wanted to spend more time with her kids, she moved from the corporate world and concentrated on building her virtual career coaching venture Careerealism.

6) You want to push yourself to the limits.

Can you make it with the skills you have? Can you make the money you have stretch to meet your business needs? Can you create and manage a team that will work towards a better future for them as well as for the business? When you take the entrepreneurial road, you are sure to find out!

7) You desire success.

It’s true that no business can succeed in a day. But it’s also true that your business may have the potential to succeed in time. If you crave to be a success; and are always depressed because you cannot attain it in your present job, it is time to move on and start something where you know you’ll accomplish what you want.

But before you take the leap, you need to exercise caution too. How do you do it?

The best way is to prepare for the uncertain times. Don’t fail to put aside at least the amount that will see you through for 6 months (you’ll still have to pay for food, gas, and such necessities). If possible, opt for a part-time job at the beginning; so that you’ll have a steady source of income when you are waiting for your business to break even.

A summary of things you should know about Do Cool Sh*t according to Miki Agrawal:

Introduction

In this episode Miki Agrawal takes a deep dive into her book, Do Cool Sh*t, where she reveals her insights on starting a successful company and living happily ever after.

In her book Agrawal teaches you fresh yet effective tactics for starting a new company from brainstorming to raising money to getting quality press coverage without having any connections. The goal of the book is to provide you with a quirky yet honest look into the life of a serial entrepreneur and give you the confidence to quit your job, start your own business, and live a happy life.

This book is perfect for aspiring entrepreneurs who are currently working for someone else and are ready to make a move into the world of self-employment.

The Book’s Unique Quality (5:18)

My book is one that you want to finish and finish fast so that you get all the answers to the thrilled adventures I take you on.

The Best Way To Engage (6:27)

You can go in and out because each chapter holds their own, but it does have a story art if you read it from front to back.

The Reader’s Takeaway (13:33)

Put your running shoes on a walk out that door! The minute you walk out that door and put one foot in front of the other things will start to fall into place.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (7:10)

When I was 24 years old I started by going to these one on one interviews with potential investors. Sitting across from these investors I found myself very nervous and not feeling like myself. So for six months I just sat in meeting after meeting, feeling very uncomfortable, and raising no money. I knew that I need to figure out what I was doing wrong and that’s when I realized I wasn’t authentic. It became very clear that if you can’t be confident in a meeting they aren’t going to invest in you. I started hosting fundraising dinner parties where I would invite anyone I knew with extra change in their pockets. I knew free food and a nice evening would get people in the door. When it came to introducing the business idea I realized at the time that I was not confident enough and had someone else pitch it for me. From those dinner parties I was able to raise $250,000 for my first restaurant business. This is just one of the examples that I share in the book and I share every bit of the detail of hosting these dinner parties.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 07:10

Notable Quotes From The Book (15:35)

“Iteration is perfection.” – Unknown

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:50)

I started off working in Investment Banking when I graduated from Cornell University. 9/11 happened just a few days after I moved to New York, I was supposed to be at the World Trade Center that day but it was the first time in my life that I slept through my alarm clock. That was sort of my wake up call. I played professional soccer for a couple of years; I worked in the film business and worked my way up in production. I had my first stomach ache when I decided to start my first business which was a gluten free farm-to-table pizza concept in New York City. My newest project is called THINX which is a women’s empowerment apparel company that provides a sustainable underwear solution for women to wear doing their time of the month.

When you are in college entrepreneurship is really not something that you study and there wasn’t an entrepreneurship course. And so I began to read books by entrepreneurs and walked away so inspired but with so many questions. I wanted to find a book that I could read and one that gave me the step by step system to go from step zero to step one in business and life.

As an American author, marketing specialist, business owner and motivational speaker, Chris Brogan helps others to learn how to run a business. This is especially helpful to entrepreneurs and small business owners. He does this by giving lectures, writing books and also by having classes for groups of people desirous of succeeding in their business.

He has developed a combination of business strategy and professional leadership; he works with others to own their life, their choices and their business future. By providing the education and tools necessary, he can teach a person how to make their own business thrive and succeed in today’s world. There are also times that he provides personal coaching, but this is very limited.

There are more than five basic lessons that Chris Brogan educates about in order to be a successful leader and business owner. These lessons may seem quite basic to most people, but with the understanding will come successful ventures in life and business.

Some of these lessons include the following, with short explanations to each. The best way to learn and hear the complete explanation is to attend one of Chris Brogan’s seminars or courses and reach his award winning books.

1)	When you own a small business, you are the brand.

You want a profile, an outstanding picture and you want to stand out more than anyone else. How you do this is simple. You are the brand, be the best you are and can be. You are who people see when they go to your business, who they think of. You want your picture to be the one that people say ‘Wow” to or about. At this point, you do not want a casual picture showing that you know how to relax and just socialize. You want others to see the business side, the cleaned up aspect, the business minded individual, and the intelligent side of you. Customers and people in general will relate to you better when they believe that you know what you are doing, that you look like you know what you are doing.

2)	Stand out above all others.

When you are a small business owner or entrepreneur, you need to be known. What better way of doing this, than to put yourself in the midst of everyone. Stop by as many locations as possible on your way home each day. Introduce yourself, be there if only for thirty seconds. When people see you, and hear you, they remember that you are there. You need to make yourself a Unique Value Proposition. This basically means that you need to create yourself in public, be the person that everyone remembers seeing. So make those extra stops on the way home each day, just to say hello and introduce you to them.

3)	Have a conversation.

This does not mean that you need to stop at each business and strike up a full-fledged conversation with every person you meet. In today’s world there are so many opportunities to speak with people it is uncanny. The social networking sites and applications like Twitter make this easy for us all. Connect with people in every way possible. Most of these can be done when at home relaxing in the evening also, or riding the bus. The point is to connect with others. The more you connect with, the greater people’s knowledge is of you. Do not just lecture and give advice, have conversations, ask questions. That is one of the simplest ideas, but seems to be so complicated for so many.

4)	Turn your passion into a business.

Easier said than done right? Wrong. If it is your passion, you are an expert at it. Do what you know best and jump in. When work is not just mundane habits on a daily basis, it is fun, it is enjoyable and it is more than worth doing. Your passion and commitment to doing what you enjoy is what keeps you going daily, therefore your business must be something you enjoy also. Focus on the mission ahead, daily. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals, and those who see the same vision. These people will help you to succeed, not drive you into ruin. Follow the passion and it will surely follow you through the hard times and the best of times.

5)	Be an employeepreneur.

Not really a word is it? Make it your word! Do not be the business owner who sits at the desk telling everyone how to do things. Get out there in the business and show them how it is done. The best way to be a leader is to lead by example. When you, as the owner, understand what has to be done and how it has to be done, it is easier to explain this. However, it is even easier to show the employees that you are not afraid to get out there and do the work too. This sets a standard for others, proves to them that you have the knowledge and the desire. Being an employee and the boss, helps you to work your ambitions and desires, but it also shows others your commitment to the goal. Follow the goal, achieve the goal.

Do you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur?

Realizing the answer to this question is often a difficult task. And often, it takes a series of hurdles for you to identify this trait in your personality. But how do you know whether it is right for you to quit your day job and start on a venture of your own? Well, there is no easy answer to this.

The good thing is that most entrepreneurs share certain characteristics. If you can identify with these, chances are high that you may have that entrepreneurial spirit in you. But don’t despair if you don’t fit them all.

Let’s take a look at some ways to tell if you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur:

You have a passion to do something. Passion for what they do is what drives the successful entrepreneurs. Edison tried and failed 10,000 times before he could design the light bulb. We may have had to do with candles still if he had given up. But he had the passion that drove him to success. Do you have the same?

You have a seriously poor employment history. Have you quit more jobs than you can remember? Not because you were not good but because you felt you were stuck – maybe even at the top when even success gets stale. If so, the next best thing is to start on an endeavor of your own where you can effectively and efficiently manage yourself.

You have the nerve to take risks. Fred Smith nearly failed his business management course when he developed a business model that focused on express delivery service. But this did not deter him from putting his thoughts into action. And FedEx was born. All entrepreneurs aren’t overnight successes. But they have the courage to follow their dreams.

You think outside the box. When the worst financial crisis hits the world, many entrepreneurs cowered in front of it. But Sarah Lavely saw an opportunity. She offered people the opportunity to vent out their frustration and relieve stress in an amazing way – throwing stuff at a wall after you buy it.

You have a broader perspective of security. For some, a secured job is a good enough thing. For others, there is no security at a job that depends on others. You never know when a silly or spiteful decision of a boss or a mess-up of the board of directors will screw it. For such souls, security is only in a job where you yourself are responsible for everything.

You have the determination to get back on your feet even after a bad fall. If you mope after every little failure, it’s best to avoid entrepreneurship. Successful entrepreneurs get back on their feet immediately after they face failure. Take Bill Gates for example – his initial Traf-O-Data was a super failure. But he moved on and became a success.

You have the support of people close to you. No entrepreneur is a success on his/her own. They need the support of their family and friends to make it through the tough times – and there sure are enough of those! Also, successful entrepreneurs never surround themselves with “yes-men”; instead, they depend on truthful advisors who can tell all at their face.

It doesn’t take a superhuman to succeed in business. But it does require the right traits to be happy and successful at it.

If you fit all these seven signs, then you have the most of what it takes to be an entrepreneur. If you don’t, no worries! There are no sure formulas to success and you may turn out to be an amazing entrepreneur even if you had a successful career as an employee. In the end passion and motivation are the key aggregators of a true entrepreneur.

A summary of things you should know about Virtual Freedom according to Chris Ducker:

Introduction

In this episode Chris Ducker takes a deep dive into his book, Virtual Freedom, where he provides the ultimate resource necessary for building a business with the help of virtual employees.

In his book, Ducker gives you a step-by-step guide to figure out the jobs you should outsource along with hiring, training, motivating, and managing virtual assistants. The goal of the book is to show you how to buy more time, become more productive, and build your business through virtual assistants.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs that have outgrown their daily tasks, are thinking about hiring other people, and are operating with a small, limited budget.

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:51)

I don’t think there are too many books out there that really cover this topic properly. There are a few books that mention outsourcing but they failed to actually show you how to do it. This is your essential guide on finding, hiring, training, managing and working with virtual staff to help you run, support and grow your business.

The Best Way To Engage (6:10)

You can jump in and out but it’s always best to read straight through.

The Reader’s Takeaway (15:52)

Without a doubt it would be the 3 list to freedom exercise. The reason why this is the one thing that I would want people to take away from the book and take real action on is because it changed my life.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (7:20)

In the introduction of the book we talk about my personal burn out story where I hit burn out after working 16 hours a day for three to four years. I was building my business and had about 100 employees at the time and I hit a brick wall. It became very, very evident to me that I was no longer running my business, my business was running me. We put a plan in place by the end of 2010 to remove myself from the business and become a virtual CEO. Which is what we achieved and I have been doing it ever since. I only work four days a week, I have a three day weekend and I work five to six hours a day maximum. It wasn’t always like this so in the book I talk about my struggle and my demons in regards to that micromanagement and superhero syndrome. From there we set about helping the reader overcome their superhero syndrome that’s within them.

Section one of the book is all about finding and hiring virtual staff. We go through everything from being very real and mentioning the facts that although we would love to just hire one person to do everything in our business, it’s not possible. You have got to hire for the role not for the tasks. And then we start off the entire book by introducing our 3 lists to freedom. The first list is a list of all the things that you hate doing every day. The second list is a list of all the things that you struggle doing and the third list is all the things that as an entrepreneur you feel like you shouldn’t be doing

In section two we go through the actual training of your virtual staff.

Section three is all about managing your VA and we go through all the different types of VA roles and how to manage them properly. We talk about the difference between tasks and projects and how they are managed differently.

Section four is about going overseas or staying local and the pros and cons of doing that.

Section five is my favorite section of the entire book because it starts to really level up everything you are doing from an entrepreneurial perspective and building a real team.

We wrap up with a bonus section where I talk about the most frequently committed mistakes by entrepreneurs when they start building virtual teams and how to avoid those as well.

Notable Quotes From The Book (20:46)

“Work on your business and don’t be trapped working inside your business.” – Chris Ducker

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:33)

I am originally from London in the UK. I am a sales and marketing guy and was in the publishing business for a long time over there. I came over to the Philippines to deep dive into the outsourcing world in 2000. In 2004 I set up my first business and sold that in 2008. After that I dipped back into the 9 to 5 for almost two years and then in 2008 I decided to go ahead and start that entrepreneurial journey again which I’ve been on ever since. We now have almost 300 employees and are a multi seven figure business annually. I have a blog, a podcast and speak as well.

I have been involved in the outsourcing business for a long time and particularly since the 4 hour work week came out I have become more active online. It had become very evident to me that there were a lot of people in the same space claiming to be gurus that really had no idea what they were talking about. There were so many false truths being pushed out on the internet that it was actually starting to cause me problems in my business. I wanted to write those wrongs that were everywhere online and provide a resource and an essential guide to finding, hiring, managing and working with virtual staff to build your business.

A summary of things you should know about The Freaks Shall Inherit the Earth according to Chris Brogan:

Introduction

In this episode bestselling author Chris Brogan takes you on a deep dive into his book, The Freaks Shall Inherit The Earth, where he gives you the formula for entrepreneurship from the ground up.

In his book, Brogan gives you the systems, processes and the foundational work that you need to turn your interests into a business venture. The goal of the book is to help you start your own revolutionary business, including what most people are missing from the basics of business, how to turn passions into businesses, and how to build out the digital channel.

This book is perfect for people who have the potential and drive to be an aspiring entrepreneur, but wouldn’t normally pick up a business book.

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:20)

My book is systems, processes and the foundational work that you need to turn your entrepreneurship into something that keeps you out of your mom’s basement. What separates me from the rest is that this is entrepreneurship from the ground up.

The Best Way To Engage (4:45)

The reader is free to skip around but I would hope that you take the time to stop and do the work that I suggest in the book.

The Reader’s Takeaway (13:25)

Set yourself up for no excuses. Give your excuses a vacation and don’t ever give them their desk back.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (6:17)

The first chapter takes you through how you are really a freak. That’s me just talking the reader off the ledge and explaining what I mean by the word freak.

After that I get into what the difference between weirdos who live in their moms basement and people who actually have a business. One of the big missing ingredients is discipline so I walk you through an actionable system for how to build discipline. I walk through all of the excuses that you make for why not to do what you are going to do.

The next chapter is all about success. This chapter is important to me because it contains a list of things to quit. It talks about how success just doesn’t show up and about ways you should think about your success and how to measure it.

From there we go right into skills. What I like about this chapter is just that a lot of times we do the things that we know how to do and we skip all the things we don’t know how to do. I push you on the things you aren’t really great at. I also talk about networking because it’s amazing how people really have bad way of trying to connect with others. I give the reader some decent ways to think about it.

Next we talk about falling in love with not knowing. I try really hard to show you how important it is to be wrong, how curiosity is really important and the misconception of thinking you need to know all the deep level detailed stuff.

I talk about how important it is to structure your framework for your days.

The next chapter is all about how to be an employeepreneur. Some people don’t want to quit their day job and for some it’s not the right move. You can create the job that you really want inside of your organization.

Another chapter we talk about systems that work for you.

From there we discuss what solo and small business owners need to know.

Another whole chapter covers falling in love without knowing. It was so important I talk about it twice.
The next chapter is called Build Your Own Media Empire.

Chapter 13 is about making sure you find all your fellow freaks.

Chapter 14 is about taking ownership. This is a pivotal chapter even though it’s small because it talks about the differences between being a freak and then maybe going to be an owner.

The next chapter is all about when things go wrong and how to deal with failure.

The very last chapter is a summary of the whole book. Take Action! Fight Crime! Save the World!

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 06:17

Notable Quotes From The Book (15:05)

“You have to know only enough to start.” – Chris Brogan

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:43)

I run a company called Owner Media Group; a professional development company where I help people try to figure out how to own the game that they must want to win. I’ve run marketing consulting companies, worked with a lot of the biggest brands out there. Most recently I have been helping anyone from any size business try to figure out solid principles of ownership that will help in you personally, in your business and into the future.

The inspiration for the book comes from my kids. I wanted to write something that will help them along their way as they grow up.
