A summary of things you should know about The Objective Leader according to Elizabeth R Thornton:

Introduction

In this episode Elizabeth Thornton takes a deep dive into her book, The Objective Leader, where she shows you how to leverage the power of seeing things as they are.

In her book Thornton reveals years of research on the concept of objectivity and how it will open your world to new cultures, new markets, and new opportunities. The goal of the book is to help you improve your management skills, make decisions faster than normal, avoid bad decision making, and eliminate the fear of failure when it comes to life and business.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who typically overreact to negative situations, judge people too quickly, and let their insecurities get the best of them.

The Book’s Unique Quality (5:39)

My book talks about the entrepreneur themselves, their mindset, and how to keep them clear in their mindset so that they can make better decisions along the way.

The Best Way To Engage (7:05)

I would suggest the reader read the book from front to back.

The Reader’s Takeaway (22:28)

I would say that the world is in your mind and we all have the power to change our minds.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (8:00)

The first chapter of the book is all about how I lost a million dollars and I take you through my whole experience from beginning to end.

From there we jump right into chapter two which is all about setting the context for objectivity and subjectivity. I define objectivity as the ability to see and recognize things as they are without projecting your fears, your background, your past experiences, and your mental miles on to whatever it is and responding thoughtfully, deliberately, and purposefully to everything you experience.

The first step in being objective is about understanding how we relate to the world and I call that The Subject Object Relationship which we go into in detail. What we experience through our senses is an object of our awareness and we respond to whatever that is which means you are responsible for and drive your response to everything that you experience. And then we go through what I call Drivers of Subjectivity and all these things that we can project onto what is that may color our ability to see things as they are.

Chapter four is about applying all of that to leadership and lays out a framework for increasing objectivity.

Chapter five is all about being objective under pressure and I give the key tactics, tools, and tips you can use to be objective in the moment.

Chapter six goes over mental models. We all have mental models which are one of the things that we project onto what it is that keeps us from seeing things as they are. One of the things I talk about in this chapter is some of the limiting and unproductive mental models that we have and I share research that I have conducted that points to five mental models that most of us have. In order to transform a mental model you have to think about it differently because mental models are deep rooted ideas and beliefs about the way things are and the way things ought to be.

The last two chapters of the book are devoted to the entrepreneur completely.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 08:00

Notable Quotes From The Book (22:45)

“The world is in your mind.” – Elizabeth R Thornton

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:36)

I have been with Babson College as the professor of entrepreneurship since 2006.

I lost a million dollars in an international fruit juice business and it taught me so much. Getting back on my feet I realized it wasn’t the business decision I was making along the way, it was how I framed my world and my inability to see things as they were. As a result of that I started studying psychology, neuroscience, and entrepreneurship and just trying to put it all together. I started learning about objectivity and developed a course around it that I wanted to share with others.

A summary of things you should know about Get A Grip according to Mike Paton:

Introduction

In this episode Mike Paton takes a deep dive into his book, Get A Grip, where he discusses how to get everything you want from your entrepreneurial business.

In his book Paton shares the entrepreneurial story of two startup founders that uncovers the real-life hardships and accomplishments that come with starting an entrepreneurial business. The goal of the book is to help you understand what it takes to be an entrepreneur, how to resolve typical issues that come with running a startup, and how to create a more effective team.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who are in a business partnership or own a business that is team oriented and need an action plan to improve their organizational operations.

The Book’s Unique Quality (2:28)

The book is a real world, in the trenches, gritty, true story of a topical entrepreneurial organization. It’s very instructive, it’s a system full of simple practical tools, and our intent was to write this book in a way where an entrepreneurial owner or leader might read the book, see things that feel and sound familiar and be able to take the techniques to solve their own business problems.

The Best Way To Engage (5:04)

This book is much more logically digested front to back rather than diving in and out.

The Reader’s Takeaway (10:40)

Vision without traction is hallucination. And the common entrepreneurial challenge isn’t a lack of vision. The real challenge is migrating that vision into the trenches of that business, helping everybody in the organization understand it, internalize it, and own the appropriate piece of it so together everyone is executing on that vision and what you want actually happens. I believe EOS and the tools we characterized in the book is a great way to help the typical entrepreneurial leadership team get better at that fast.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (6:10)

The book illustrates the people who founded and are running a typical small business. There are about 35 people in this organization, it’s called Swan Services, and the founding entrepreneurs have been wildly successful in the first seven years of this business. We meet these owners when they have begun hitting a few ceilings and starting to feel as though the business is running them rather than the other way around. What the readers are introduced to are a lot of the common frustrations, challenges, and root causes of the inevitable ceiling that people who run and own small businesses hit from time to time. As the story unfolds we take a deep dive into those root causes and we watch the members of the leadership team get together in a room with the aid of a professional EOS implementer and master the tools, disciplines, and simple concepts that EOS teaches to identify, prioritize, and resolve those common obstacles and issues.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 06:10

Notable Quotes From The Book (12:12)

“Every entrepreneurial business needs a system for operating.” – Mike Paton

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:34)

I am a lifelong entrepreneur, grew up in an entrepreneurial household and today I spend all day, every day, surrounded by entrepreneurs and their leadership teams helping them implement a system for running a small business called EOS (The Entrepreneurial Operating System).

My co-author and I both individually believed that this book needed to be written. We both work in the trenches with entrepreneurial leadership teams all the time, we both are avid learners, and both fallen in love with a forum for a book and we believe that telling the EOS story using the entrepreneurial approach would be a compelling read for most of the people we surround ourselves with.

A summary of things you should know about Fairness is Overrated according to Tim Stevens:

Introduction

In this episode Tim Stevens takes a deep dive into his book, Fairness is Overrated, where he shares over 50 leadership principles that will revolutionize any workplace.

In his book Stevens provides you with a manual of tools, practical lessons, real truths, and relevant case studies that discuss the effective pillars of leadership that very successful leaders display. The goal of the book is to teach you how to increase your integrity, surround yourself with successful people, effectively manage a crisis, and develop a culture of true leadership at your organization.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who are building a public figure persona or manage a team of people at an organization and want to take their leadership to a stronger, empowering level.

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:09)

One thing that makes this book different is that it’s highly practical. I tried to make this book very reachable and easy to implement.

The Best Way To Engage (4:20)

This book can be read from front to back or you could use it as a reference.

The Reader’s Takeaway (11:55)

It’s possible to be a leader of any kind and not be an ego driven narcissistic leader. It’s possible to be a humble leader and to be very effective.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (5:29)

I broke my book down into four big categories and these are big categories because they are the huge portions of what is involved in leadership.

The first section is Being a Leader Worth Following and to me that’s where it starts. Because if you don’t have a place of character of integrity from which you lead then good chances are it’s going to unravel. In this section I talk about living a life with margins, just making sure that you build space in. I talk about being a lifelong learner and not getting to a place where you stop learning and stop growing. I talk about guarding your family, paying attention to your marriage, and your children. I think great leaders are those who not can manage their work life but also have a great marriage and manage their family life.

The second section is about finding the right people. The first chapter in this section is called A Resume is Worthless, and I break down and talk about the fact that resumes contain very little of what is important to me when I am hiring staff. One thing I don’t think employers use enough is social media. This is where you take advantage of their ‘social media scrub’ and looking for things that are important that will determine their future productivity as an employee.

Section three goes into building a healthy culture. You can have the right people but if you don’t pay attention and keep your eye on culture it can become toxic very quickly. As so there are 10-14 topics on building a healthy culture that I think are really important. One is as a leader you have to make a commitment to believe the best about your employees. Another one is that you have to let your leaders lead. You can just give them responsibility; you have to give them authority too. A lot of times, as leaders, we want them to do the work but we don’t want them to make the decision, and that’s dis-empowering.

The final section in the book is called Leading Confidently Through a Crisis. How we lead in those times is going to make concrete how we are remembered as a leader and how people follow us. So in this section I talk about dealing with resignation and how to let people go when they aren’t right for the company. I talk about what to do when you have e-mails flying back and forth and you are upset and how to back down from that. I talk about the pain of growth and the stages of failure that we can go through.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 05:29

Notable Quotes From The Book (13:32)

“The success of a leader will rise or fall on the decisions that he or she makes about the people around him or her.” – Tim Stevens

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:35)

I spent my first nine years of my adult life working for a nonprofit organization and was able to stretch my leadership skills there. From there I went into a very small startup local church that had just began going and was meeting in rented space. I was able to jump on the team with five others and see it grow over the next 20 years. Most recently I have joined an organization called the Vanderbloemen Search Group and we get to come along side churches and nonprofit organizations and help them find staff.

One of the inspirations behind writing this book was my own leadership growth. Being able to pass along some principles that had served me well over the years that someone along the way passed to me. Secondly I wanted to help people address startups and adventures while maintaining their personal values and integrity. That is a tough thing to do and I don’t see a lot of people writing on that particular subject.

1) Procrastinate on Purpose by Rory Vaden

Procrastinate on Purpose grew out of the Rory Vaden’s quest to see how super-achievers accomplish their work. We have all heard that time is finite, but Vaden insists that is wrong. In fact, he says, everything you have learned about time management is wrong. Of course, we all have the same hours in a day, but super-achievers invest time in tasks today that give them more time tomorrow.

In his book, Rory Vaden brings his high-energy approach and can-do spirit to the most nagging problem in our professional lives: stalled productivity. Millions are overworked, organizationally challenged, or have a motivation issue that’s holding them back. Vaden presents a simple yet powerful paradigm that will set readers free to do their best work—on time and without stress and anxiety.

“A brilliant insight turned into an actionable method. Start now!”— Seth Godin, author of Linchpin

“We all have the same 24 hours in a day to make an impact but what if you could actually create more time? Procrastinate on Purpose shows how the greatest leaders in the world have figured out how to literally multiply their time. This book is a game changer.”— Jon Gordon, bestselling author of The Energy Bus and The Carpenter

2) What More Can I Say by Dianna Booher

The world has changed and you can’t use yesterday’s communication strategies to create tomorrow’s successes. Dianna Booher is the master on this subject and this may very well be called her masterpiece. This book is timely and relevant and it teaches you how to what matters most in communication: build trust and reinforce relationships.

In her book Dianna Booher provides an essential nine-point checklist for success in the art of communication and persuasion—for building solid relationships, and for increasing credibility in the workplace. With lessons from politics, pop culture, business, family life, and current events, the book identifies common reasons that communicators fail to accomplish their goals, along with examples and analyses of messages that succeed and those that fail.

“Dianna Booher has done it again! What More Can I Say is the definitive book on the hows and whys of communicating effectively. I’ve always said leadership is an influence process—and to influence others, you have to know how to get your point across clearly. What more can I say, other than ‘Read this brilliant book!’ –– Ken Blanchard, coauthor of The One Minute Manager® and Legendary Service

“Dianna Booher may have accomplished the impossible. By following the tactics revealed in What More Can I Say?, you will communicate in a way that creates a dynamic engagement with others after which all parties walk away satisfied and smiling. Excellent work from one of today’s most important communication experts.” –– Marshall Goldsmith, author or editor of 34 books including the global bestsellers MOJO and What Got You Here Won’t Get You There

This is a manual of doing, not talking. No fluff, no stale inspirational platitudes. It’s time to move past planning and kick-start Monday into action.

In her book, you will learn:

How to identify your own productivity style

How to select your “tools of the trade” to maximize your effectiveness

When face-to-face conversations are more effective than e-mails

Why a messy desk is right for some, but a disaster for others
