5 Secrets for Developing Your Own Personal Brand

What is the secret to successful brand building? Well, it is a combination of a great plan, and lots of hard work. Whether you are a multi-million dollar enterprise or a home-based small business, you need a clear idea if you want to build a brand identity.

Let’s take a look at the important pointers that can help you with developing your own personal brand:

1) Put your story out at the front

Want a good example of brand storytelling done right? Just check out the Lego Movie. A fun representation of the possibilities that the brand creates, the movie is equally enjoyable for both children and adults.

Consider who you are, what your business promises are, and how you started out to get some ideas about your brand’s story. Keep it crisp and concise. And be true about who you are. And you’ll have the base on which to build your brand.

2) Give your business a personality

Serious? Cool? Quirky? Every business has a personality of its own. It depends on a number of factors, such as your target market, your products/services, your approach, and so on.

While McDonalds and Burger King both serve burgers, they have a distinctive personality. If you sell video games to peppy teens, your brand needs to reflect a hip and cool image to attract the right crowd.

But it won’t surely suit your brand’s image if you offer technology solutions to new businesses. Again, either of these images won’t suit a luxury brand selling fragrances to the ultra high net worth individuals.

3) Take a consistent approach

The simple logo, use of green and white, and the entire look and feel of Whole Foods Market convey the concepts of health, freshness and sustainability. Consistency is the key to brand building.

After you have identified the personality of your business, it is important to focus on how to reflect it at every step. Your logo, website design, color choice, text use, and every little detail needs to be consistent with the image you want to project.

4) Introduce your business on social media

If you aren’t on social media yet, it is high time you do it. Consider your brand’s personality and who your audience is before you decide which platforms to engage on and how to do it.

A jewelry designer hoping to reach out to women may do well on Pinterest (as Etsy established). But if you are a telecommunication solution provider aiming to connect with followers, Twitter and LinkedIn may be more advantageous.

You also need to come up with the right ways to engage on social media. Remember, a conversation is a two-way thing. And if you fail to converse, your presence alone won’t be of any help to your brand.

5) Help others…always

The best way to establish your personal brand is to be there for others. Whether it’s as simple as answering a question on social media or as complex as creating a how-to guide, extend a helping hand.

Not only will it make you feel good, it will also help you earn respect and admiration. And you never know when a good turn results in a new opportunity. While it is essential to learn to say no at times, it is also important to say yes, whenever you can.

Little tactics help create a brand identity that is known and valued by all.

Don’t expect overnight results. Developing your own personal brand takes time. You have to plan it well, put in the required work, and wait for the results. It may be slow, but once your brand identity catches on with the audience, it’ll grow on its own.

A summary of things you should know about The Pop Up Paradigm according to Melissa Gonzalez:

Introduction

In this episode Melissa Gonzalez takes a deep dive into her book, The Pop Up Paradigm, where she reveals how businesses can build real connections with their customers.

In her book, Gonzalez describes how businesses can use temporary products to generate customer loyalty, understand new markets, and test innovative concepts. The goal of the book is to teach you the most important ways you can benefit from a pop-up, the best type of marketing for your business, how to stay ahead of the retail market, and what to consider when launching a pop-up.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who own an online business and are considering a move into physical retail or own an established retail business yet struggle to get a product out.

The Book’s Unique Quality (2:51)

I wrote this book to explain the seven evolutions we’ve seen in retail, seven of the top reasons that we worked with brands who are doing pop ups, and some great case studies for you to learn from and get inspiration from. I think that it’s different in that it’s full of case studies in our years of expertise and there are how-to books out there but this is a different approach.

The Best Way To Engage (3:45)

I think you could read it in just a couple of sittings but because we broke up each chapter for different reason you could jump in and out.

The Reader’s Takeaway (10:45)

The first action step is to figure out what your goal of the Pop-Up is. Without knowing what the goal is it’s almost impossible to craft a successful activation strategy.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (4:25)

The book is split up in four parts. Part one is talking about the evolution of retail, where retail has been and where we are seeing it now. Then it shifts into how you bridge that gap with a Pop-Up. Pop-Up is really an opportunity where you can connect the on and offline worlds.

In the second part of the book we go into what a pop-up offers your brand. If you are going to be utilizing Pop-Ups we give you some different reasons why and ask you the following questions. What’s your brand promise? Who is your key customer? What is your main goal of the pop up, and what is your budget?

In Part three we think about pop ups A to Z. Now that you have figured out your goals but you need to insure that you’re prepared to properly measure ROI for a Pop-Up. An ROI isn’t just the sales you are having but also how this will benefit your business for the next six months. I give a little Q&A to ask yourself if you are ready to do a Pop-Up. And then we go into some basics of how you can create buzz for your Pop-Up, everything from Guerrilla marketing to social media tactics, to traditional media.

And lastly in Part four we conclude with what’s still to come. The evolution of retail has really been impacted by the progression of technology and so we talk about how we see technology continuing to evolve and different things that are exciting us as we step into the future.

Notable Quotes From The Book

“Go after mindshare, not market share.” – Ron Johnson

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:00)

I am the founder of The Lion’esque Group, we are pop up architects. Before that I worked on Wall Street on a trading desk. I am a proud mom to an adorable Jack Russell Terrier and I love experiencing new things.

We have been specializing in this since 2009 and really seen a shift as to how brands are utilizing pop up retail and seeing it fit in their budgets as they are coming around to the new year. As we have been a part of that evolution we wanted an opportunity to share with brands top reasons why people are doing it, share case studies, and inspire ideas for brands to utilize it.

A summary of things you should know about Pocket Man according to Scott Jordan:

Introduction

In this episode Scott Jordan shares his book, Pocket Man, where he shares what it took him to be featured in thousands of major press articles, made millions of dollars, and made an appearance on ABC’s Shark Tank.

In his book, Jordan reveals the successes and failures he learned when it comes to reinventing yourself by pursuing your passions and mastering the art of personal promotion. The goal of the book is teach you how to get the attention of the public in order to stand above your competition.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who are having trouble promoting themselves to the media and need an example of what it takes to get your name or product out the public effectively.

The Book’s Unique Quality (2:54)

I don’t think there are any other books on the same topic. This book was written in a style that I call unauthorized autobiography.

The Best Way To Engage (4:12)

You can jump in and out or read straight through. I think the reader will be sucked in from the very first chapter. This is a book that you start reading and you don’t want to put it down.

The Reader’s Takeaway (10:34)

If you want to be a successful entrepreneur you have to be willing to put yourself on the line, step outside your comfort zone, and channel your passion for your company into promoting it. If you don’t have the passion to promote your business you’re in the wrong line of work.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (4:48)

The book begins where I begin as a child. I didn’t have a good relationship with my father and he’s been one of the driving forces in my life. I have always been a gadget guy and even as a kid I would collect radios and little TV’s and things like that. My company SCOTTeVEST sells clothing with lots of hidden pockets for gadgets and that was the early connection. I majored in entrepreneurship in college which was before there were majors in entrepreneurship. My first real taste of being an entrepreneur was when I started a calendar company while I was in school and the book goes into some of the things that I learned in that process.

After college my dad tricked me into working for him at the family business cemetery. I went door to door selling cemetery lots and one thing I learned from that was that I needed to believe in something in order to sell it. It’s really hard to believe in selling cemetery lots and as a result I was not successful. My father ended up selling the business out from under me which was a terrible experience and devastating to me at that time but looking back it was the best thing for me.

After that I went to Law school at Case Western Reserve where I graduated at the very top of my class and became a lawyer for years. It was then that I realized just how much I hated practicing law but I found myself in a job that was paying well and I didn’t know how to get out of it.

SCOTTeVEST was founded based upon all the travels I did as a lawyer trying to juggle all my devices and how to carry them in a business casual environment. I knew there had to be a better way to carry your devices stylishly and much to my surprise there wasn’t a solution on the market that looked at clothing as a carrying device. The rest of the book is about how I built SCOTTeVEST by promoting it and the various things I did, some controversial and some not. I talk about the time I went on Shark Tank and the behind the scenes aspects of it all.

Notable Quotes From The Book (11:45)

“I believe in anything worth doing is worth doing fast.” – Scott Jordan

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:37)

I just turned 50 years old and I live in Sun Valley, Idaho. I have my wife and three poodles and I am a passionate personal promoter for my product, the SCOTTeVEST, which is a full line of clothing designed to hold your electronic devices.

A summary of things you should know about Body of Work according to Pamela Slim

Introduction

In this episode Pamela Slim shares her book, Body of Work, where she gives you the tools to tie your story together in order to have a meaningful career.

In her book, Slim teaches you how to find the right connections for your accomplishments, sell your story, and continually reinvent and re-launch your personal brand. The goal of this book is to guide you through today’s complex career landscape to better understand the importance of the work you do.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who are struggling to understand their true passion while working multiple jobs and need a way to find fulfillment, joy, and inner peace.

The Book’s Unique Quality (5:09)

On one hand it really is a different way of looking at work. I am the kind of coach were I feel fiercely passionate about not being totally prescriptive. I feel so strongly that people need to be designing a life and work situation that fits for them and their particular situation. I think it’s easy to be prescriptive sometimes and tell people what to do and I didn’t want to do that with this book and it’s what sets it apart.

The Best Way To Engage (6:30)

I wrote it to have real stories of real people who are demonstrating the key skills that I talk about. I wanted to make it interesting to read, engaging and conceptually understandable which is why a lot of people tend to read it all the way through first to understand how the pieces fit together. It is a way of looking at the world of work that may not make too much sense if you jump in in the middle of it.

The Reader’s Takeaway (19:56)

The heart of the book for me is to create and innovate. When we are able to clearly define what it is that we want to create that is the skill that will be the most important for you as an entrepreneur. It’s also very important to share your story.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (8:06)

The first chapter lays out the overall concept of Body of Work. My premise is that our body of work is everything that we create, contribute, affect and impact throughout the course of our lives.

Then we begin to dive in piece by piece at what you can examine in order to build the body of what is going to be personally meaningful and significant and also have a good impact in the world. The piece of that is defining your roots which are identifying your values, beliefs and the problems that you want to solve. We go through a process of the things that are going to drive your work forward.

The second piece is name your ingredients and this is where you go in to understanding specifically your skills, strengths and experiences.

From there we go in and explore different work modes.

That moves us in to create and innovate which is to me the heart and body of work. I think that we realize our potential and contribute the most when we are creating specific projects.

The next section is what I call Surf the Fear. If there is one thing I know over working 20 years with people around their work lives is that any kind of change and transition involves fear, doubt and uncertainty. I do not believe that we need to ignore or crush fear but rather learn to harness positive components of fear.

The next chapter is on collaborating and this is a skill that is so useful and important. It covers everything from collaborating with our market and it’s also about being very specific about how you are collaborating with people in order to strengthen yourself.

The next to the last session is on your definition of success. This is where I have seen many people fall into unhappiness which is where they are not conscious about what truly defines success for them in their life and business. This chapter focuses on how you can create a definition of success that really works for you and makes you happy while you are building it.

The final chapter is about sharing your story. Once you do have this very clear understanding about the work you want to do, your unique strengths, your purpose and why you are doing the work, you have a strong consistent story. One thing that I find with many entrepreneurs who have many interests is they have a hard time explaining exactly who they are and what they do. You need to figure out a way to take all of your diverse ingredients and offerings and communicate it in such a way that people can clearly understand what you do.

Notable Quotes From The Book (21:00)

“But I say to you that when you work you fulfill a part of earth’s furthest dream assigned to you when that dream was born and in keeping yourself with labor you are in truth loving life. And to love life through labor is to be intimate with life’s inmost secret.” –Kahlil Gibran

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:36)

I am a speaker, writer, business coach and a very happy mom. I have spent time in just about every work mode that you can possible imagine. I spent time as an employee, a nonprofit professional, volunteer executive director, a consultant and independent business coach. I find great joy and interest in figuring out how people express themselves through their work.

My inspiration came from the work that I was doing specifically for about nine years which was working with people who were in corporate jobs that wanted to leave and start a business. Operating in the startup phase for nine years I began to see specific gaps and things that were missing from the way of framework for understanding the new world of work.

A summary of things you should know about Digital Bacon according to Alex Rodriguez

Introduction

In this episode Alex Rodriguez takes a deep dive into his book, Digital Bacon, where he shares his proven tactics and methodologies to promoting a business effectively online.

In his book Rodriguez provides you with a step-by-step campaign for increasing your online traffic, improving your social awareness, and measuring your results. The goal of his book is to make your online presence more engaging and attractive to your audience.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who are having difficulties promoting a business online and need an all-in-one, easy-to-follow digital marketing strategy.

The Book’s Unique Quality (4:23)

I didn’t see a book out there that talks about a campaign from beginning to end.

The Best Way To Engage (5:20)

You can definitely read the table of contents and figure out exactly where you need to start. However, I did write the book in the context of a campaign development process so it is important to start at the beginning to at least understand what exactly I am talking about when I say campaign framework. BACON is an acronym for the five essential components of an irresistibly attractive online presence.

The Reader’s Takeaway (16:49)

The main concept in this book that I am putting forward in the book is to challenge anyone that is working on their online presence to think about it in the terms of a campaign. You need to make sure that it’s researchable, strategic, creative and properly distributed and measurable. If you are lacking on any of those five concepts then I would suggest you step back and really look at how you can incorporate one of these concepts in to your campaign for maximum effect.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (7:06)

The objective of this book is how to make your online presence attractive. The title Bacon represents a metaphor for what is attractive to us and it’s also an acronym for the five essential components of a digital marketing strategy. I have looked through hundreds and hundreds of campaigns online and separated the ones that work from the ones that don’t work. And looking at the ones that work I have recognized that all of them have the same five components. With each essential component I match it up with an essential process to acquire this component for your campaign.

The B in Bacon stands for Based On Reality. Based on reality we are suggesting you deploy a discovery phase and I teach you how to build a successful discover phase. This includes discovering your current site and social media presence. After that I look at what you offer and take a look at it from a very fresh perspective. I ask very challenging questions to make you think very deeply about what exactly you offer. Then we talk about purchase drivers and I have a whole list about them which is much more than just driving down your cost. Purchase driving is things that really pull the trigger and allow you to sell online. From there we talk about key word research and I teach you how to build that research. Then we look at how to build an audience profile and after you do that you will need to build a persona. With all this research I ask you to narrow it down in to 10 big lessons; the 10 big things that you learned out of the discovery phase.

The A in Bacon stands for Aimed Towards Results. Effective online efforts are based on measurable goals and every initiative is informed by a plan customized to its business needs. In this quality I recommend you go in to a strategy phase. Not every business out there thinks strategically about their online presence but I challenge you and show you how to do it. In this chapter I show you how to select a primary KPI which means key performance indicator. I am not talking about business KPI or accounting KPIs but specifically about digital KPIs and I give you a list of KPIs that you can choose and aim towards for your digital campaign. Then we talk about potential competitive exploits and I show you about seven different things that your competitor might be lacking that you might be able to exploit to get an edge up on them. I talk about the difference of strategic schemes, tactics and strategies and I tell you how to differentiate and incorporate them in to your campaign.

The C in Bacon stands for Creatively Developed. The phase that corresponded to creatively developed is the production phase. In this chapter I talk about the value of creative excellence that is still very relevant today. I talk about mind mapping, bulleting and creative processes. Then I talk about three mind hacks that have helped me personally. I go in to production timelines and how to produce your assets.

The O in Bacon stands for Organized In Propagation. The reason these successful campaigns are found is because they distribute their offer correctly on the web. Here I talk about earned channels verses owned and paid channels. I talk about the difference between those channels and how to utilize them best for your campaign. We talk about distribution framework, how to choose which best works for you and how to deploy them. I have a chapter which is based on the ultimate website pre-launch checklist which is a two and a half checklist for you to apply or hand to your web developer before you launch any web presence online. I also have a formula on how much you should bid for paper click ads if you chose to go that route.

The N in Bacon stands for Numerically Measured. These campaigns never measure results in the form of vague adjectives but rather as numbers. They rely on objective measurements to know whether their efforts are moving their business forward or not. This is paired with the phase I call the analysis phase and this is where we go back and check these metrics and make sure that our campaign is on track. I have a section here on revealing your KPI’s you established back in the strategy phase. I also give a couple of testing methods that you can apply in order to measure your online presence and make sure that it’s hitting on point.

Finally, at the end of the book I have two pages that include downloadable resources and links to tools that I mention throughout the book.

Notable Quotes From The Book (17:49)

“Many of us are so engrossed in to our respective businesses that we forget a key fact. What we think we sell is irrelevant. The way you dreamed up your product or service, the years you put in to it, the passion you have for it, the amazing team behind it, it is all irrelevant unless your offer satisfies a functional need for someone else.” – Alex Rodriguez

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:31)

I develop high-end digital marketing campaigns for companies that are looking to transform their brands and attract more business. My focus is launch campaigns and I’ve built some launch campaigns for some of the world’s most renowned brands such as Disney, SeaWorld and the list goes on and on. I was born in New York City, grew up in the Dominican Republic and started my career there in the advertising industry. Now I lead my own agency called Yummy Marketing.

We are in a very interesting era which is deemed by many as the digital era. Most everybody has access to tools to become their own advertiser, publisher and media manager but in earlier times you had to do all of that through an agency. With that immediacy of access to these channels comes a very big challenge. Not everybody is used to knowing how to promote their businesses online in a very effective manner. I recognized there was a void for speaking about very trident and proven tactics and methodologies and I decided to write a book to address that point.

There are no other books on naming. There are plenty of books on branding but these books were written in the 70’s and the rules have changed. The reason no one has ever written a book on naming is because namers are traditionally linguist and you cannot teach linguistics in a skinny little book. I don’t use linguistics in my naming, I just teach people how to name things using concepts and being clever.

The Best Way To Engage (5:05)

Entrepreneurs will probably want to jump straight to chapter three on domain names but I would say to start from the beginning because the book is written in sequential order.

The Reader’s Takeaway (26:40)

Anytime you have to explain how to spell or pronounce your name or what it means, you’re essentially apologizing for it and that devalues your brand.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (6:00)

Before you jump into creating names you really need to understand what makes a name good and what makes a name bad.

The book starts off with a chapter called Smile. Smile is an acronym for the five qualities that make a name great. S stands for suggestive and you want to have a name that suggests something about your product. The M in smile stands for meaningful. You want your name to be meaningful to your customers, not just to you. The L in Smile stands for imagery. People remember pictures and images much more easily than they remember words or letters. The E in Smile is very important. You want your name to make an emotional connection with people. 50% of purchasing decisions are based on emotion. Think of a time you purchased a bottle of wine that you’ve never tasted before but you liked the label, that’s an emotional purchase.

The next chapter is called Scratch – The Seven Deadly Sins and when to scratch it off the list. If your name looks like a typo scratch it off the list. If your name gets flagged as misspelled when you type it into a word document, it’s a problematic name and will drive people crazy. Make sure to be original and come up with your own new idea for a name.

After that we jump into the domain chapter. The #1 misconception in naming something is thinking you must own the domain name. Many big companies have started out not owning their domain name and it doesn’t matter. In the book I give you 30 different words you can put before or behind your name. As your company grows you can think about purchasing your domain name but until then don’t obsess over it because it really won’t matter.

In chapter four you are given a roadmap to follow and a lot of questions to answer about the goals for your name, everything from brand positioning to your target audience and your brand personality. In this chapter I give examples so you can see what I am talking about. The internet is your best source for brainstorming and I give you all kinds of website to go to.

Lastly, I give you some ideas on how to review names. It’s easy to come up with the name sometimes but it’s hard to get everybody to agree and this chapter will show you how to build consensus. I have 12 rules for building consensus and have developed these over the years by having to do it constantly with our clients and they really work. I also talk a little bit about focus groups and why you shouldn’t use them.

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author

I am a self-taught person who didn’t go to college. When I was in eighth grade I knew I wanted to be in advertising and I was able to talk my way into an internship with an ad agency. I eventually landed at Ogilvy and Mather. I talked my way into becoming a namer at Lander while on a Match.com date. I am an interesting person and traveled to more than 45 countries including Libya, Zimbabwe and Cuba.

I did not want to write a book, my parents are authors and I know that writing a book is a lot of work for not always a lot of money. I got an e-mail from a publishing company asking if I had ever thought about writing a book. I didn’t jump on it right away. I struggled with if I wanted to take all that time writing a book. I deliberated about three weeks over it until I finally decided to do it and I am so glad I did! About 90% of people who contact my company can’t afford us and I thought the book would be something that they could get and help them on their own.

Invent, Reinvent, Thrive by Lloyd Shefsky

Invent Reinvent Thrive offers all the answers you need to get your business where you want it to be. You’ll learn exactly where new and multi-generational business owners fall short and miss incredible opportunities, why they fail to take the plunge or innovate–and how you can rework, revitalize, and reinvent your business not just to avoid the most common perils but to lead your business to the apex of your industry.

In Invent Reinvent Thrive Kellogg School of Management Professor Lloyd Shefsky provides the inspiration and insight any entrepreneur or family business needs for long-term success–and he backs it all up with proven models of what works and what doesn’t.

Shefsky reveals the common thread of all business success stories: reinvention. He explains not just how to reinvent concepts and ideas from the start, but ways to continuously innovate and reinvent your business to meet today’s constantly changing marketplace conditions. In addition to his own expert insight, Shefsky provides firsthand advice through case studies derived from dozens of original interviews with entrepreneurs and family business giants, consisting of the leaders of some of today’s most successful companies, including:

Howard Schultz (founder, Chairman, and CEO of Starbucks)

Jim Sinegal (founder of Costco)

Chuck Schwab (founder of Charles Schwab & Co.)

Tom Stemberg (founder of Staples)

“If you think business books are boring, this is your chance to prove yourself wrong. Storytelling is an art, and Shefsky brings that art to business. Invent Reinvent Thrive is a treasure trove of valuable lessons.” – Stan Kasten, President and CEO, Los Angeles Dodgers

Overfished Ocean Strategy by Nadya Zhexembayeva

Overfished Ocean Strategy offers five essential principles for innovating in this new reality. Zhexembayeva shows how businesses can find new opportunities in what were once considered useless by-products, discover resource-conserving efficiencies up and down their value chain, transfer their expertise from physical products to services, and develop ways to rapidly try out and refine these new business models.

She fills the book with examples of companies that are already successfully navigating the overfished ocean, from established corporations such as BMW, Microsoft, and Puma to newcomers such as Lush, FLOOW2, and Sourcemap.

The linear, throwaway economy of today—in which we extract resources at one end, create products, and throw them away at the other—is rapidly coming to an end. In every industry, creative minds are learning how to make money by taking this line and turning it into a circle. Nadya Zhexembayeva shows how you can join them and avoid being left high and dry.

The book introduces you to the author’s Proactive Sale Strategy, a rigorous process for positioning your company to sell to a well-financed buyer at the best possible price. You’ll find out how to prepare yourself and your company for sale, understand your asset and how it benefits prospective buyers, and identify and remediate any issues that could prevent a sale or drive down sale price.

Hello, My Name Is Awesome by Alexandra Watkins

Every year, 6 million companies and more than 100,000 products are launched. They all need an awesome name, but many (such as Xobni, Svbtle, and Doostang) look like the results of a drunken Scrabble game.

In this entertaining and engaging book, ace naming consultant Alexandra Watkins explains how anyone—even non-creative types—can create memorable and buzz-worthy brand names. No degree in linguistics required. The heart of the book is Watkins’s proven SMILE and SCRATCH Test—two acronyms for what makes or breaks a name.

She also provides up-to-date advice, like how to make sure that Siri spells your name correctly and how to nab an available domain name. And you’ll see dozens of examples—the good, the bad, and the “so bad she gave them an award.” Alexandra Watkins is not afraid to name names.

Naming a business or product has always been challenging—and sometimes costly— for entrepreneurs and inventors, but it’s one of the most important decisions they have to make. Alexandra Watkins presents a foolproof model that anyone can use to create and evaluate brand names like a pro.

“Zappos.com originally started out as ShoeSite.com, but that limited our potential future growth. A company’s name can be vital to its success. Reading the tips in this book can help anyone avoid the pitfalls.” —Tony Hsieh, New York Times bestselling author of Delivering Happiness and CEO, Zappos.com, Inc.
