A summary of things you should know about Mindset according to Carol Dweck:

Introduction

In this episode world-renowned Stanford University psychologist, Carol Dweck, shares all her insights on her book, Mindset, where she explains why it’s not just our abilities and talents that bring us success–but whether we approach them with a fixed or growth mindset.

In her book Dweck provides a checklist to assess yourself and shows how a particular mindset can affect all areas of your life, from business to sports and love. The goal of the book is to teach you how to reach your own personal and professional goes while developing a love of learning and resilience that is the bases of great accomplishment in every area in order to achieve ultimate success.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who are trying to figure what it is that makes them tick and would like to increase their own feelings of success and fulfillment.

The Book’s Unique Quality (2:29)

There are a lot of books on how to be successful and they are wonderful books but they don’t tell you the mindset, the way of thinking that can lead you on the path to success or failure. And they don’t tell you how to change your mindset to be more successful.

The Best Way To Engage (3:11)

I am told that it’s a very quick read. I am also told that many CEO’s read it all the way through and read it every year to remind themselves of the mindset lessons.

The Reader’s Takeaway (15:15)

I would want the reader to know that their abilities can be developed and that their abilities are developed through taking on challenges and sticking to them.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (4:13)

The book opens by describing the mindsets. How do people differ and why do some people love a challenge and others want to play it safe?

The first mindset is a fixed mindset where people believe that talents and abilities are just these fixed traits, you have a certain amount and that’s it. When you have this fixed mindset you really, really care where your intelligence and talents are fixed. So you’re always trying to look smart and avoid mistakes that might make you look foolish. Your life is organized around looking smart and not looking dumb and when this permeates an organization we call it a culture of genius.

The other mindset is a growth mindset. In this mindset people believe that their talents and abilities can be developed. In a growth mindset you believe your basic talents and abilities developed through hard work, good strategies, and mentoring from others. Instead of worrying if you are going to look smart or not, in the growth mindset you jump into challenges because that’s how you learn. You choose things that are hard and you stick to them and you end up accomplishing more. This growth mindset also creates better teamwork because you believe in growing abilities through collaborating with others. In the long run people with the growth mindset not only accomplish more but they foster accomplishment in others.

Then in the book I go through how these mindsets actually work. So we talked about taking on challenges verses avoiding them, and another thing is effort. In a fixed mindset effort is a bad thing and they belief is if you were really smart things should come easily.

I then go into mindset in sports and it turns out that most of the really, really successful athletes have had a growth mindset. Many of them were naturally talented but they didn’t coast on it and they capitalized that by working hard and developing it.

The next chapter is on business and I do case studies of leaders with growth and fixed mindsets.

The book also talks about mindsets and relationships and how a fixed mindset can really derail a relationship whereas a growth mindset can help solve problems over the course of the relationship.

The next chapter deals with parents, teachers, and coaches and how to foster growth mindset in kids.

The final chapter is on changing mindsets. All of us are really a combination of fixed and growth mindsets. We can have fixed mindsets in some areas and growth mindsets in others. Or we can even change from situation to situation when we feel we are being measured and judged. It teaches us how to be aware of those mindsets and how to bring ourselves more into a growth mindset when that’s desirable.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 4:13

Notable Quotes From The Book (16:20)

“It’s for you to decide whether change is right for you right now. Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. But either way keep the growth mindset in your thoughts then when you bump up against obstacles you can turn to it, it will always be there for you showing you a path into the future.” – Carol Dweck

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:35)

I am a Professor of Psychology at Stanford University and I have been studying why people succeed and fail for over 40 years.

I have been doing research for many years on why some people are go getter’s and jump in whereas others, just as talented or able, shy away from difficulty and end up not fulfilling their potential. After researching this for many years I came to the discovery of the mindsets as the cause of these differences. My students told me I had to write this book after benefiting from this knowledge and wanted others to know about it.

What is the one thing that every entrepreneur wishes for? Well, you may get different sets of wishes, but one thing that is for sure is entrepreneurs need more time. When you start a new business, you have to handle numerous and tedious responsibilities on a daily basis.

Every entrepreneur needs more time in the day so that it becomes easier to manage everything and stay on top. But is it possible? It is when you add automation and handy apps to your bag of entrepreneurial tricks.

Here’s a basic list of productivity tools for entrepreneurs that will make it possible to maximize your workday:

Yast: When your focus is on saving time, you need to have a tool like this for tracking time first. Be it tracking how many hours you spend on a particular task or how much work has been put into a project, this tool makes it easy and simple.

It’s free for personal use; and available at a reasonable cost for business use.

Evernote: You never know when a “lightbulb” moment comes. This tool makes it easy to store and track spontaneous thoughts, ideas, perceptions, etc. It also helps you create a proper environment to get things done on time.

Good news – it is available for free for Android, iOS, and Web versions.

Trello: Project management often becomes a nightmare for startups. This is where this tool comes to help. With it, you can create project boards, almost same as Pinterest, and add and manage individuals and resources on them, similar to Basecamp HQ.

Whatever the size of your team, you can use this tool for free.

Dropbox: Storing and sharing documents was never this easy! The beauty of this tool lies in its simplicity. And you can access it from anywhere, anytime, and from any device. You need not worry about damaging or deleting your files too, as it keeps them secure.

You can get loads of benefits from the free version; you can upgrade to Pro or Business too.

LastPass: Cyber criminals are becoming more of a threat to our businesses and to prevent ourselves from becoming prey we need strong, secure passwords for the ungodly amount of online accounts we have. The problem is having to remember them all. LastPass saves you from having to reset your stupid password everytime and stores them with one secure login.

You can get the benefits for free; but you need to upgrade for mobile integration (which I suggest).

Bitrix24: A central program that offers a host of CRM tools for easy management of data, this one also comes with a social intranet system. Whether you are tracking contacts, messaging, managing the sales funnel, planning activities, this tool can be of immense help.

You can use it for free for teams of up to 12 people; and upgrade if your team’s larger.

HipChat: When it comes to internal communications, this is perhaps the best tool to manage it. Create chat rooms, invite specific users, message and share files – you can do it all from this. It saves both time and money and helps organize things. It is far more reliable than the other IM apps out there.

The fee for using this chat tool is quite reasonable; so, it fits the expense budget rather well.

Getting more done in 24 hours may be a challenge for a new entrepreneur, but it does not need to be if you know how to do it right. All you need to do is find the right tools for extra help, and you’ll get more work done, and even have time to spare (yeah right!).

In his book, Sutherland lays out his widely used project management system called Scrum which is a simple framework for solving the most intricate work problems effectively. The goal of the book is to simplify your work life, increase productivity, and get more done in less time than before.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who are struggling with managing small teams, increasing performance, and making forward progress with large projects.

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:41)

If you go to Amazon you will see that this book has moved up to the top of the list on time management. Scrum is about getting things done with teams and teams are much more powerful than the individual.

The Best Way To Engage (5:28)

It’s specifically not designed as a reference book but designed to tell the stories about why Scrum works. Any way you read you will find a very interesting story focused on a critical issue for teams getting work done.

The Reader’s Takeaway (31:54)

The key issue is that within every person and team is a spirit of greatness that lays untapped and to tap that trying to use a traditional management style will not work. You must become a different type of leader and scrum gives you an organizational structure to bring out from the team that greatness that is within.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (5:50)

The first chapter of the book is titled The Way the World Works is Broken. Research shows that most people hate work. The only thing that is worse than going to work is being sick in bed. The reason I believe is the fundamental driver of this problem is that people can’t get stuff done. The whole idea of teams self-organizing to get great results is key to Scrum. So this chapter explains why things are broken and how Scrum fixes them.

That leads us into the second chapter which explains the origins of Scrum.

In the third chapter we get more focused on the teams. A lot of managers don’t understand that the difference in the best performers and the worst performers as individuals is 1 to 10. But if you look at the difference between the best teams and the worst teams it’s 1 to 2,000. So the team effect is two orders of magnitude bigger than the individual effect. So as a manager if you take a team and try to increase productivity person by person it will take you a long time and maybe forever. If you implement Scrum with a cross functional team and you focus the team on the goal they can double their production in a few weeks. This chapter focuses on how you can get teams to do twice the work in half the time.

The fourth chapter is all about time. You need to measure production instead of hours and in this chapter we show you how to plan.

Chapter five explains what happens when you are focused on measuring hours. If you measure hours you get a lot of waist. People think they have to hang around at their desk and punch their clock by doing nothing. We show systematically in this chapter how to build a cross functional team that gets on a self-improvement cycle that is continually removing waist from the system and accelerating faster and faster.

From there we move in to planning and Scrum uses reality base planning. This chapter gives the entrepreneur the nuts and bolts on how to get this implemented in the company with a lot of stories and examples the planning and implementation.
In the seventh chapter we describe how to get employees so motivated and happy that they never leave your company, they get twice the work done in half the time, they have fun while doing it and they are making sure the company objectives are being met. The bottom line is that happiness drives revenue and we show lots of stories on why that works.

Scrum in the art of getting twice the work done in half the amount of time.

Notable Quotes From The Book (32:45)

“The entire armed forces need to get agile.” – Unknown

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:35)

I am a CEO of a company called Scrum Inc. I had a career as a fighter pilot which is part of what led to the book we are going to talk about. I spent 11 years in the air force and what I learned flying over North Vietnam is imbedded in my book. When I got back I completed an advance degree in medical school and was a professor of radiology, biometrics and preventative medicine. I was then hired away from the medical school in to a large banking company and when I looked at what they were doing in software I implemented what I learned from medical school and the military and that resulted in the creation of Scrum.

Several years ago I wrote a book called Software in 30 days and in there we focused mainly on IT and software development. There is still a debate on what works and doesn’t work and I wanted to amplify on that. I also wanted to talk about how Scrum is moving outside of software development and tell all the great stories that I couldn’t get into my software book.

A summary of things you should know about How to Succeed in 12 Months according to Serena Star Leonard

Introduction

In this episode Serena Star Leonard shares with us her inspiration for writing a book that helps people make their dreams come true. Her book, How to Succeed in 12 Months, gives you a very practical, step-by-step guide to doing things that may seem impossible such as finding more time and money for projects and support. Serena’s book is the perfect fit for wantrepreneurs and entrepreneurs alike that need help with motivation and inspiration for bringing ideas and dreams to life step by step.

The Book’s Unique Quality

This book is very practical and I am interested in not just inspiring people to get started but actually to show you how step by step you can do things that may seem impossible right now. The practical nature coupled with the motivational side sets it apart from the other books.

The Reader’s Takeaway

It would definitely be to get started on making your dreams a reality. Things tend to fall in place once you start to create momentum around a dream or goal.

A Deep Dive Into The Book

The main thing that runs throughout the book is on taking action. It doesn’t matter what your dream is or what is it that you really want to do with your life, you won’t know if you’re going to achieve that without taking action. We usually surprise ourselves with the opportunities that open up as a result of taking action.

We look at taking the first steps because the first steps lead to the second steps which then lead to the third steps. I find that when using this process it just rolls out in front of you and people are amazed at what they can achieve just by taking one step at a time. We also talk about the concepts of success and failure.

I try to redefine the concepts of success and encourage readers to really embrace failure because it is part of the journey. We have a lifestyle check list that we look at analyzing every part of your life. You get to see where you are right now so that you can kind of create it as a benchmark and review it after six or twelve months.

We talk about making the impossible possible. For most of the goals and dreams that I have they do seem impossible to me and some of them succeed and some don’t but I do have a mindset that anything is possible. As a result of that I have found that if I hadn’t taken those actions in the beginning they would have never eventuated. It is important to fulfill all the things on your bucket list and make those things a reality.

We talk about three specifics such as how to get more time, finding money for projects and support. From there the book goes in to really specific practical things like what if things are not working for you right now or what if you got your dream half way and you get stopped all of the sudden. We look at troubleshooting all those little things and from there we have additional resources to help you on your way.

I share our first 12 month journey because the whole premise of the book is that you can completely change your life in 12 months. I share how we did that and how we went from being normal people to becoming traveling documentary film makers.

Notable Quotes From The Book

“If you are looking for a sign this is it.” – Unknown

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author

I am a business coach by trade, blogger and writer. I’ve been traveling for 28 months with my husband working on the road filming documentaries about people who make a difference in their communities all over the world.

I work closely with people on making their big dreams come true and I wanted to write a book that would help people succeed in that. In the last few years I’ve been living a life where I go for every one of my big goals rather than putting them out in the future. I believe these are things I could share with other people and help them reach their own big goals too.
