A summary of things you should know about How To Ruin A Business Without Really Trying according to MJ Gottlieb:

Introduction

In this episode MJ Gottlieb shares his book, How To Ruin A Business Without Really Trying, where he shares what every entrepreneur should not do when running a business.

In his book Gottlieb gives you 55 of the most painful and destruction mistakes and failures many entrepreneurs make when running a business today. The goal of his book is to help you learn from other entrepreneurs’ mistakes while taking the ego out of the equation allowing you to enjoy the freedom of your own experience.

This book is perfect for aspiring entrepreneurs who are thinking about starting a business and need a stepping stone to help promote faster growth in the beginning.

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:02)

Most of the books that are out there tell people what to do. I believe that this is really the first book that tells people what not to do. And the reasoning behind that is that I don’t believe entrepreneurs like to be told what to do.

The Best Way To Engage (3:48)

You can absolutely jump from one section to the next and it doesn’t necessarily have to be read from front to back.

The Reader’s Takeaway (8:01)

I would say doing your due diligence. I think that doing your due diligence is one of the most recurring themes of the book.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (4:31)

The book is separated in to two sections. The first section is 39 case studies starting with the top do nots and never evers. These are the most common and prominent mistakes entrepreneurs make and I do that by highlighting the mistakes that I have made. Every case study has the mistake that I made and then it goes into the right thing to do which is what I know about it now and how I would go about doing things differently. Even though I came from the fashionable background it is applicable for all business whether you are product driven or service driven.

The second part of the book has everything to do with people that are in pursuit of the deal, raising capital, the different types of investors, the whole process of looking for money, the value of resources compared to just money, different problems with technology and different ways that we can take advantage now of the technology that we have. Sections also contain things that you would never learn in a business class such as something like Murphy’s Law. It is full of information that happens in the real world of being an entrepreneur that you really can’t be taught in business class.

Notable Quotes From The Book (9:20)

“The jack of all trades is a jackass.” – MJ Gottlieb

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:48)

I have been typically in the offline business for about 20 years having owned and operated five fashion brands since 1991. The last one I owned was up until 2007. I recently wrote a book about all the mistakes I made in hopes that aspiring entrepreneurs can actually learn from those mistakes.

I had just lost my second business and I was writing down all the mistakes that I had made just to get it out of my system. A friend of mine said it was great that I was doing it but asked if I had any idea the value that this information can have for those people that are looking to start a business. He said to call it What Not To Do When Starting A Business and then years later I made it into a book.

A summary of things you should know about Stuff I Wish I’d Known When I Started Working according to Fergus O’Connell:

Introduction

In this episode Fergus O’Connell takes a deep dive into his book, Stuff I Wish I’d Known When I Started Working, where he provides the tips and tools you need to work faster.

In his book, O’Connell teaches you how to avoid the common mistakes of other aspiring business goers and skip a few rungs on the corporate ladder. The goal of the book is to help you be more effective, more accountable, more visible, and less afraid.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who want learn from the mistakes of other successful people and need a fast-track guide to getting more done in less time.

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:52)

We looked and found that there were no other books out there that came at work from this particular angle.

The Best Way To Engage (4:46)

This is a jump in and jump out kind of book.

The Reader’s Takeaway (12:28)

It’s not talent that gets people where they want to be its commitment and perseverance.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (4:46)

In the book we have identified 24 areas where I have written the kind of stuff that I learned along the way. A couple of the chapters are about things like aiming high and a second chapter is about appreciating life. It’s all right to have very ambitious dreams but you have also got to live in the moment. There is another chapter about why it is good to be creative and another on why it’s good to fail. There are 8 to 10 chapters that take an idea and try to sell the reader on that particular idea.

In one chapter I talk about the four things that I have learned about bosses. The first thing that I learned is that bosses are actually human and since they are human they will make mistakes. A second thing about bosses is that they like to have their problems solved. I’ve also learned that bosses tend to be delusional. And lastly bosses seem to think that long hours are productive which is not true.

We have chapters in the book which are how-to chapters and for example there is a chapter on common sense. The seven principles of common sense are firstly that many things a simple. The second principle is the importance of knowing exactly what you are trying to do. The third is planning and figuring out the sequence of events in advance. The fourth principle is that stuff doesn’t get done if there aren’t people to do them. The fifth principle is that things rarely turn out as expected. The sixth thing is that things either are or they aren’t. And the last principle is the golden rule of looking at things from other people’s point of view because if we did we would get a much clearer understand rather than just seeing it through our own eyes. I encourage the reader to spend a week or two applying these ideas and seeing the world through this prism.

Notable Quotes From The Book (14:00)

“Commitment gets you started and perseverance keeps you going.” – Fergus O’Connell

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:35)

I graduated with a degree in mathematical physics and then I went in to software development and worked in that for about 10 or 12 years. In 1992 I started my own project management consulting and training company and that’s one of the things I’ve been doing ever since as well as writing books in the area of project management and time management. I have this alternative life as a novelist as well.

I was thinking one day about how I’d like to be 19 again and to have all the knowledge and wisdom I have now. I was thinking of it in terms of life generally but then I thought a book which thought from the perspective purely of business might be a good thing to do.

A summary of things you should know about People Tools for Business according to Alan Fox

Introduction

In this episode Alan Fox gives a deep dive of his book, People Tools for Business, where he shares 50 strategies for building success, creating wealth, and finding happiness.

In his book, Fox provides easy and practical tools, organized into 50 chapters, that each address a specific issue and gives a strategy you can use to overcome it. The goal of the book is to help you gain success in areas such as developing self-confidence, improving management skills, and how to respond to being fired.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who need a handy book of business shortcuts that are time-tested and help solve everyday business related problems.

The Book’s Unique Quality (2:23)

I’m not so serious about it and I have short chapters. You do not have to start at chapter one and read all the way through.

The Best Way To Engage (2:49)

You can read it from front to back or you can jump around from chapter to chapter.

The Reader’s Takeaway (19:59)

The one chapter that is really the most important I call Stick it Out. In harsh economic times you need to stick it out. If your marriage isn’t working stick it out. You have got to stick it out and ultimately you will succeed by sticking it out.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (3:13)

I start with the importance of leaving your grumpy attitude at home and putting a smile on your face every day.
One of my favorite chapters in People Tools for Business is called The Magic Piano. I think if you look at the world as a magic piano you will have more fun and get deeper in to life. In terms of business I have a different take than almost anybody.

In my book I go over the dreaded annual review and how I believe it shouldn’t be something that we do at the end of the year but rather every single day or at least once a week. If we change our annual review to something we do daily or weekly perhaps it won’t be something that is dreaded and more useful for you and your employees.

I also go over hiring and firing in my book. I think that if you look at firing as an opportunity to get a position which is more suited to you and your talents I believe that you will do better. A number of people that I have personally fired are now doing much better in the new positions that they are now in.

I have a chapter about advertising your mistakes. When I make a mistake I advertise it to people and people seem to like me better because I admit I am human and secondly they own up to their own mistakes.

In another chapter I talk about the importance of delegating some of your work. Delegate all that you can and trust them to do a good job because when you show your trust they are more likely to do a better job.

These are some of the many ideas and business tools that I give in my book People Tools for Business.

Notable Quotes From The Book (21:29)

“There will be days when the universe seems to conspire against you and when it does take a deep breath, give silent thanks that your misfortune wasn’t worse, and enjoy a good laugh.” – Alan Fox

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:39)

I am 74 years old and I’ve had a long and very successful business career. At first I was a CPA with a national CPA firm, then an attorney with my own law practice for a number of years and finally I formed a commercial real estate company at ACF Property Management Inc.

I think that you can do what you want to do and have fun while doing it. People Tools For Business is about doing things a little differently in business and enjoying yourself at the same time.
