A summary of things you should know about Refire! Don’t Retire according to Ken Blanchard:

Introduction

In this episode Ken Blanchard takes an in-depth look into his and Morton Shaevitz book, Refire! Don’t Retire, where they share a story of what it takes to make our elder years more meaningful.

In their book Blanchard and Shaevitz reveal years of research and experience through an exciting, humorous, and practical story of how an elder couple was able to get the best out of their lives. The goal of the book is to teach you unique ways to better your relationship, improve your thinking, rejuvenate your health, become more passionate, and seize new opportunities worth living for.

This book is perfect for seasoned entrepreneurs who are approaching retirement and are looking for a way to keep up their energy levels in order to make their life more enjoyable.

The Book’s Unique Quality (12:14)

Number one it’s short and easy to read, number two it’s a story, and three I give the reader a lot of chances to reflect on it all.

The Best Way To Engage (9:54)

Since all my books are short I recommend you read it all the way through because it will only take about an hour to read.

The Reader’s Takeaway (9:02)

The big thing I would want the reader to understand is the importance of growing and learning. I believe that growing and learning is like oxygen to a deep sea diver and without it you’re in trouble. No matter your age you should always keep going and add zest to your life.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (4:05)

I write parables and it’s about a couple that goes back to their 45th high school reunion and they are a little disappointed that so many of their classmates look at aging as a sentence rather than an opportunity. And there is an old teacher of theirs who ended up going and getting a doctors degree who invites them both to come see him. After going to see him they discover that there are four areas that we ought to all look at. The first area of refiring is emotional relationship wise and we ask the question are you doing the same thing with the same people in the same way? And have you met any new people? What are you doing to get out of your comfort zone?

The second area is figuring out what you are doing to refire intellectually.

The third area is your physical self which is very important.

Finally we talk about what you want to do to refire spiritually and who you really want to be in the world.

Refire is about getting zest in your life on an ongoing basis and making your life exciting no matter what your age is.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 04:05

Notable Quotes From The Book (10:56)

“Refire! Don’t Retire. Make the rest of your life the best of your life.” – Ken Blanchard

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:10)

I was a college professor who came out to San Diego for a one year sabbatical leave when I ran into the group called The Young Presidents Organization after doing sessions for them they adopted me in and encouraged me to start my own company now known as The Ken Blanchard Companies. We are in the leadership development business and our hope and dream is that someday everyone everywhere will be influenced by somebody who is making a difference in the world.

When I turned 65 I was on the fall with Zig Ziglar who invited my wife and I to the 59th anniversary of his 21st birthday. When I asked him if he was going to retire his response was ‘I’m refiring, not retiring’ and I thought wow what a great concept.

A summary of things you should know about Buy, Hold, and Sell according to Ken Moraif:

Introduction

In this episode Ken Moraif reveals all his insights on Buy, Hold, and Sell where he shares his investment strategy that could save you from the next market crash.

In his book Moraif gives you very practical advice on the most effective investment strategies, the myths that surround stock investing, the benefits of diversified portfolios, and selling to protect your principle. The goal of the book is to help investors keep all their financial investments, know when to cash out, and prepare themselves for the consequences of a market crash.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who are seasoned business owners that are looking for an alternative financial system that will maximize their retirement funds.

The Book’s Unique Quality (4:15)

There are very few other Financial Advisors that recommend that you actually sell. The vast majority believe in buy and hold. I spend a good part of the book talking about the myths that they propagate on the public about why you should buy and hold are actually myths.

The Best Way To Engage (5:22)

I suggest the reader read it from front to back but if you want to get straight to the point you can just skip to the back and get my points on that.

The Reader’s Takeaway (14:52)

The expression that I like is someone who is forewarned is worth two that aren’t. The concept that I want people to take from the book is that buy and hold are two legs of a three legged stool. You have to have a buy and hold strategy but more importantly you have to have a sell strategy because you haven’t made any money until you sell.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (8:12)

I believe that in order to capture the audience and keep their attention you need to be entertaining. The book is fun to read with humor and stories. Most importantly I go through all of the myths that people have heard and debunk them.

I go through four different investment selling strategies. For example one of them is Your Magic Number which is the amount of money you need so that you can now retire. In the book I have a worksheet that helps you to calculate what your magic number is and it’s so important that you defend that number. I also talk about how to use a trailing stop loss strategy, a trend analysis strategy. These strategies are mathematical and will work if you have the discipline and implement them.

I am a strong believer that you can’t just tell people what the problem is, educate them on why they should believe you, and then show them solutions, but you also have to give them the motivation and drive. So at the end of the book there is also a section that is basically a motivational talk to give you the courage to sell when the next Bear Market comes. And not to just sit there and buy and hold and watch half your money evaporate.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 08:12

Notable Quotes From The Book (16:24)

“You can be young without money but you can’t be old without it.” –Tennessee Williams

“The way you win the game of investing is by not losing.” – Ken Moraif

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:37)

I am a certified Financial Planner; I’ve been practicing with clients for 27 years now. I run a firm that is one of the top 50 fastest growing financial advisor firms in the nation. And the last three years in a row I’ve been named one of the top 100 Financial Advisors in the nation by Barron’s Magazine.

The philosophy of buy and hold is one that has been around for a long time. My mom was an investor and we lived off of her investments and when I was a young boy I saw my mom win some and lose some depending on the market. So I never really believed in the philosophy of buy and hold and when I went into this business that’s what they teach you. And so I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how not to have my clients go through that experience and the strategy and philosophy that we developed is what this book is about.

A summary of things you should know about The 5 Years Before You Retire according to Emily Guy Birken:

Introduction

In this episode Emily Guy Birken takes a deep dive into her book, The 5 Years Before You Retire, where she reveals a comprehensive guide to planning your retirement early.

In her book Birken gives you a complete overview of retirement planning with simple strategies that explain how you can maximize your last years before retiring through conservative financial decisions. The goal of the book is to help you save money for your future, get the most value from your 401K, and maximize your current savings that is realistic for years to come.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who have a very basic understanding of what it takes to retire and need a simple yet comprehensive guide that will educate on the early steps of retirement.

The Book’s Unique Quality (2:46)

The big thing is that I am focusing very specifically on the actions that the reader needs to take to be prepared.

The Best Way To Engage (3:32)

For the people who don’t have a background in finance and who are just now thinking retirement for the first time, it makes sense to start on the first page and read through to the end. For those who have been saving for a while and feel like they got a good handle on some things, I would suggest jumping around to the part of the book that fits their needs best.

The Reader’s Takeaway (12:43)

I would say to manage your expectations. It’s not bad to dream about all the things you want to do but you must remember that retirement cannot solve all your problems. You need to manage your expectations and find your contentment within yourself.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (4:28)

I have the book broken up into three parts. Part One is about the nitty-gritty of your finances for retirement. Part Two I call The Government Giveth and Taketh Away. And Part Three is Home, Family, and Other Considerations.

In the first part, The Nitty-Gritty of Your Finances, I start by helping you figure out how far away you are, how much money you have, and how much money you might need. I liken saving for retirement to be similar as starting a weight loss journey. The first thing you have to do is know where you are. So if you are starting a weight loss journey you have to first step on the scale and if you are starting a retirement journey you have to figure out how much money you have and how much you will need.

The first two chapters are all about figuring out what you can count on and how much you will need to live comfortably. And then the second chapter is all about maximizing your savings and your budgeting over the last few years before retirement.

The third chapter is about how to structure your income in retirement.

The fourth chapter is on how to find the right financial planner. I am a daughter of a financial planner and have a very rosie view of financial planning but I also want to make it clear that you need to be your own advocate in finding a financial planner. I go through all the different ways of what you need to do to find a financial planner that you can work with and trust including questions to ask.

From there I talk about what to expect from Medicare. There are a lot of potations for Medicare and it’s a little overwhelming so it’s a good idea to know what to expect before getting into retirement.

Finally, I talk about how to plan for healthcare options in retirement.

The final section, Home, Family, and other Considerations, I talk about what your housing options are in retirement and that includes staying in your home to moving into a retirement community. I also cover things like reverse mortgages and how that can work. I talk about family fortunes, how your retirement will affect your children, your grandchildren, and potentially your elderly parents.

I also talk about creating a budget on a retirement income.

The last two chapters I cover common retirement pitfalls and the 10 possible things you could do that would screw up your retirement. I go through what these common pitfalls are and show you how to avoid them.

Finally, I talk about what to do if you don’t have enough saved and what your options are in that situation.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 04:28

Notable Quotes From The Book (13:42)

“If you plan to retire you need to recognize that you can only count on your own actions.” – Emily Guy Birken

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:35)

I am a Personal Finance writer; I write on the internet, on many different sites. I’m also an author and currently on my second book on retirement called Your Retirement Path.

I was frustrated by the fact that retirement planning books all seemed to focus on younger workers, those who are in their 30’s and 40’s. And then there are some books on stretching your budget for those who are already retired but there didn’t seem to be any guides available for that crunch time in those five years before you retire. I wanted to fill that gap for those who are looking at retirement in the very near future.

A summary of things you should know about The 30 Year Paycheck according to Sander Biehn:

Introduction

In this episode Sander Biehn takes a deep dive into his book, The 30 Year Paycheck, where he discusses what makes corporate America so demeaning and why employees put up with it.

In his book Biehn where he tells the story of the narrator who strives to avoid the 30 year paycheck, but faces a personal toll while trying to remain employed, raise a family, and save for retirement. The goal of the book is to teach you lessons that help employees, mid-level managers, and executives find a path needed to grow personally.

This book is perfect for aspiring entrepreneurs who are trapped in a full-time job and need a guide to help them work around the pressures that come with working in corporate America.

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:22)

I put my book in a narrative format so that people could really approach it and read it like they would a piece of fiction but learn something from a business perspective. The advice and wisdom that you find in the book is really in between the lines a little bit. You watch this character as this character goes through a career and you learn from the mistakes that this character makes. You see the character change and see the character realize a path forward and I think that’s a very powerful way for people to learn.

The Reader’s Takeaway (9:51)

No matter who you are or what it is that you know how to do, you have the gifts to be enough and not only to be enough but to be superior at who you are. I believe it’s in the heart of every person to be something amazing and to do something absolutely spectacular with their lives and career.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (5:05)

The book starts out with a young person who is in college and graduating with a degree in classical studies of philosophy. This degree doesn’t have a lot of meaningful path forward as to what to do with it as you get out of school so this character falls into a career in sales. The question we are trying to answer is why does the character stay in this sales position that wasn’t necessarily a dream job in the first place? This job is a safety net for the character and what we find is that when you stay in that safe spot you start to lose the innovation that’s in your heart and the ideas that you have.

As this character moves through his career he starts burying the way he sees the world and starts to adopt seeing the world in the way that he thinks his superiors want him to. In the end we find that that doesn’t serve him very well and it limits his career inside this large company. In the end of the book the character decides to go back to his roots and do things his own way.

He finds that large organizations really aren’t suited for people marching to the beat of their own drum. People that have this entrepreneurial spirit, there are ways that they can innovate inside of organizations.

I talk about a number of things that organizations need to do to evolve and it concentrates on what we as individuals need to do to bring us back to our roots. In this case this individual decides he needs to move on and create his own thing. I think what’s really important about this is it talks about the evolution and what happens to most people as they fall into a career. Very few of us end up actually going after what we really want to do straight out of college.

I talk about the best thing that we can do to not only be successful but also happy is to follow who we are and what it is that excites us. By not doing those things we start to limit ourselves and eventually it starts taking away from a piece of who we really are and enabling us to be the best that we can be.

Notable Quotes From The Book (11:25)

“I was trying to act like my boss but really I was just a cheap knockoff of who my boss was and I was totally forgetting who I was.” – Main Character in the book

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:37)

I have worked for about 20 plus years for a very large telecommunications firm in sales. I have always been in sales since I got out of college to almost up to the present. About a year and a half ago I left the company and decided to start my own business in social selling for business to business sellers.

I was doing a bunch of traveling as a sales person and I was hearing a lot of the same types of people complaining about things about their work. I was hearing these same kinds of complaints everywhere I went and I started realizing that I had some answers to these complaints which led to the book. The other thing that inspired me is that I wanted to write a different kind of business book. I wanted to make my book an overall good read and I felt that that was missing in the world.

A summary of things you should know about You Can Retire Sooner Than You Think according to Wes Moss:

Introduction

In this episode Wes Moss share his book, You Can Retire Sooner Than You Think, where he gives a five-step process for getting on the fast track to a great retirement.

In his book, Moss uncovers his findings of an intensive study on retirement revealing that it does not take financial genius, millions of dollars, or high end investment skills to have a solid retirement. The goal of the book is to show you how to determine what you need retirement money for, figure out how much you need to save, and develop an income stream from multiple sources.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who are successfully running a business and are looking for a quick, painless transition from work to retirement.

The Book’s Unique Quality (5:07)

I have determined that there are some concrete financial benchmarks that Americans need to set their sights on.

The Best Way To Engage (22:43)

You can jump in and out. I would love for everyone to read the whole thing but if you just read the first 3 chapters, chapter 8 and the appendix you will get a whole lot out of this book too.

The Reader’s Takeaway (24:19)

I want people to understand that contrary to popular belief being able to stop working and being in a financial position of security is more accessible than most people think.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (7:14)

My answer to the question does money buy happiness is yes but only to a point. Throughout the book you will find different financial thresholds to get to. In my study I found that the happy people needed to get to around 82,000 in income. This is a really important prevailing theme that goes throughout the book.

Another interesting part of my data found is that if you chart out the number of years to pay off a mortgage, relative to levels of happiness, very clearly in my data you’ll see that as the years come down the level of happiness reportedly goes up. So the lower years you have to pay off your mortgage you will find greater level of happiness. I have a whole chapter in the book on how to figure out a way to get rid of your mortgage as soon as possible.

Another thought in the book has to do with multiple sources of income. What I have discovered in the book is that there is a real sense of happiness as we increase the number of different income sources we have. There are a lot of psychological benefits from knowing that if one of those incomes goes wrong you have a lot of others to replace it with. I talk about that as we evolve in the next 20 or 30 years we must really understand and think about possibly not having multiple ways to earning your income.

This really is a book about how to make the right decisions that will lead you to retiring and hopefully retiring earlier than you think.

Notable Quotes From The Book (27:24)

Instead of a favorite quote I have a favorite chart and that is the relationship between happiness and years left to pay off your mortgage.

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:38)

I have been in financial media and the investment business for about seventeen years now. I have been a part of WSB Radio in Atlanta for the better part of six years and really have had a lot of fun in the last year after writing You Can Retire Sooner Than You Think.

I have always wondered if money could really buy happiness. As entrepreneurs I think we have all had this fear of running out of money. About four years ago I heard Dave Ramsey talk about a study at Princeton about money and happiness. I wanted to take this study a lot further and answer the questions about the financial levels and habits of happy people.
