When you start on your entrepreneurial journey, you are sure to hear one important piece of advice – you need to maintain a work-life balance. But what exactly does it mean? Does it imply that you divide your day into two equal parts – one dedicated to work and the other to life? Not really!

Work-life balance implies that you put equal emphasis on the two. But it’s easier said than done. It can be difficult to think of your life separately when you have to juggle numerous roles and handle numerous responsibilities. So, what do you do?

Here are a few tips that can help you become an effective entrepreneur:

Tip 1: Remember why you decided to be an entrepreneur.

If you started because you loved what you did and wanted to do what you loved, work will never feel as a burden. And while it can take up most part of your day, especially when you are just starting out, it will not make you feel as if you have wasted it.

Tip 2: Schedule your day.

Not just the work portion, but every part of it. And try to stick to your routine. There will be times when you have to reschedule a meeting or attend your child’s ballet recital. But otherwise, you need to plan out how you will spend the day. This way you can avoid the fear that something you wanted done won’t be on done on time.

Tip 3: Don’t set yourself up for failure.

Setting a big goal for the year isn’t a good idea. Instead, focus on smaller goals that you need to achieve within a week, or may be a month. It will make you feel good when you achieve these smaller goals. And it will also help you attain the bigger goal you want to achieve in the long run.

Tip 4: Don’t neglect your health.

While you may love to handle every little detail for your business, if this means that you skip your breakfast, miss your exercise or don’t get enough sleep, it isn’t really the best thing for you. Eat healthy, exercise regularly, and get enough rest; and you’ll see what a difference this little things make in your life.

Tip 5: Set aside some ‘me’ time.

Taking care of your physical health isn’t the only thing you need to do. You need to refresh and re-energize your mental and spiritual self too. Go on a date, indulge in a spa break, plan a vacation, or do whatever you feel like. And switch off your Smartphone and leave your laptop behind on these occasions.

Tip 6: Remember your family and friends support.

Be grateful every day for how everyone in your circle of life helps and supports you. It may be your spouse helping with housework or a business associate chalking out a financial plan. Say thank you whenever you feel; expressing your gratitude always makes you feel better.

Being an entrepreneur doesn’t necessarily mean losing sleep or finding no time for it altogether. If you love what you do, you can build your business into your lifestyle. And this way, you will be able to achieve the right balance between work and life.

Also, don’t stress about balancing your work and life. It will only mess up things even more. Instead, focus on what you need to do to stay healthy and happy. And when you love your work as an entrepreneur and be part of your circle, you will find that the work and life portions works out on their own.

A summary of things you should know about The One Thing according to Jay Papasan:

Introduction

In this episode Jay Papasan reveals all his insights on his and Gary Keller’s national bestseller, The One Thing where they reveal the surprisingly simple truth behind achieving extraordinary results.

In their book Papasan and Keller provide you with a simple yet effective approach to improving the results in every area of your life including your work, personal health, relationships, and inner spirit. The goal of the book is to help you be more productive, become healthy and fit, increase your paycheck, boost business sales, build a career, and nurture stronger relationships with others.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs that are tired of living mediocre lives and need an actionable system that will help them achieve results they never thought possible.

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:54)

I think the combination of the way I write and the way Gary thinks is we are both very practical. I think we have a proven system and our ways to implement it is what makes all the difference.

The Best Way To Engage (4:48)

We organized the book as teachers and coaches by what they needed first.

The Reader’s Takeaway (21:50)

I want people to internalize this idea of the focusing question. I think a lot of times we are not appropriate in our moments because we are not really clear about where we are going. When you know what your one thing is you need to hold on to it because that allows you to say no to stuff.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (6:14)

I think that we are living as business people in a time through technology, through a connected flat world, where we have unlimited opportunity. The things that we can say yes to in terms of business opportunities, people, and networking opportunities, are really crazy and we haven’t evolved to having an understand of what we really need to say no to.

There are six lies that we believe that we think makes sense but in reality they don’t. One of the six lies is that everything matters equally. That in a world of too many choices, too many obligations, and a to-do list that get too long, in our rush to do everything we end up treating everything as if it’s equal. The first big lesson of the book is taking the idea of priority and applying it to our to-do list. Take your list of all the things you could do and identify the things that you should do, and do those first.

The next big thing that gets in the way is when people try to do two things at once and call it multitasking. Research shows that when you try to do two things at once you lose time and efficiency.

In the heart of the book is a very humble question we call The Focusing Question. And if there was one habit we wanted people to take away it’s this idea right now of knowing your number one priorty. And we want them to say this question… What’s the one thing I can do, such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary? This question was formed through years and years of consulting with entrepreneurs.

When you identify your one thing, the best way to get people to do it is to make an appointment with themselves to do it. In our research the most successful people use their calendars primarily not to meet with other people, but to schedule time for themselves to do their most important work. So identify your one thing, you make an appointment with yourself to do it on a regular basis, and then you let that lead your results.

What we saw is that a lot of people would have the appointment show up but they would not have a place where they could effectively work. So we teach people to build a bunker, find a place in your life that you can really get focused and be able to give your full attention to the things that matter most. Also, store provisions, once you have that place you need to make sure that you have everything that you need to work. You also want to turn off any electronics that could possibly distract you from your one thing. And lastly you want to enlist support. People always underestimate how much the people in their environment will come and help them if they will just tell them why keeping this time is important.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 06:14

Notable Quotes From The Book (23:04)

“You need to be doing less with more effect instead of doing more with side effects.” – Jay Papasan

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:16)

I live in Austin, Texas. My wife runs a highly successful real estate team here called The Papasan Property Group and we have two kids, Gus and Veronica. In the big picture I grew up in Memphis Tennessee, spent about 20 years in publishing before settling with my family here in Austin to be a writer.

My Co-author is Gary Keller and he founded Keller Williams Realty which is now the largest Real Estate franchise company in the world. In the course of working on an education piece for the company I was writing with him on some real estate books and he wrote an essay called The Power of One and I had a ah-ha moment. From that I realized that this is Gary’s one thing. So as soon as I read that eight page essay we dug in and spent about five years researching and trying to identity exactly his techniques and how they lined up with other successful entrepreneurs.

A summary of things you should know about The Miracle Morning according to Hal Elrod:

Introduction

In this episode, Hal Elrod shares his book, The Miracle Morning where he believes how you start the day sets the context for the rest of your day which sets the context for the rest of your life.

In his book, Elrod teaches you his ultimate morning routine that helped double his income within two months. The goal of the book is to provide you with a real life experience of success and the steps on how to wake up each day with more energy, motivation, and focus to take your life to the next level.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who want to change their lives, but have trouble waking up early in the morning and feel as if they are losing energy and motivation throughout the day.

The Book’s Unique Quality (5:43)

The Miracle Morning is the highest rated book many, many times over both in terms of sales and five star reviews. After applying the concepts that I teach you in this book you immediately see extraordinary results.

The Best Way To Engage (7:56)

I suggest the reader read from front to back.

The Reader’s Takeaway

The one concept that I would like the reader to take away is to wake up earlier than you have to because you want to, not because you have to. Because how you start the day sets the context for the rest of your day which sets the context for the rest of your life.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (9:40)

It starts out with the introduction which is my story and why yours is the one that matters. I share the details of my car wreck and the actionable lessons I learned from it.

Chapter one – it’s time to wake up to your full potential – this just reinforces the idea that we are capable of so much more than we could have ever even considered for ourselves. This chapter is designed to really remind you of the unlimited potential that’s in all of us.

Chapter two – The miracle morning origin born out of desperation – this is the in-depth version of the story of how I came up with the miracle morning.

Chapter three – The 95% reality check – it’s essentially the reality check that 95% of our society will never live life on their terms.

Chapter four – Why did you wake up this morning – The purpose behind the miracle morning is the idea that most people wake up not because they want to but because they have to. When we hit the snooze button we are starting our day with procrastination which sets the tone for you to become the person that procrastinates in other areas in life. This also starts your day with a lack of self-discipline.

Chapter five – The five step snooze proof wake up strategy for the snooze-oholics – This is the most important chapter.

Chapter six – The life savers – Six practices guaranteed to save you from a life of unfulfilled potential.
S – Silence (meditation/prayer)
A – Affirmations
V – Visualization
E – Exercise
R – Reading
S – Scribing or Writing

Chapter seven – The six minute miracle morning – One minute for each of the life savers.

Chapter eight – Customizing your miracle morning to fit your lifestyle and achieve your highest goals and dreams – I give you all sorts of options on how to do your miracle morning. I allow you to make it your own so that it fits your lifestyle and achieves your goals and dreams.

Chapter nine – From unbearable to unstoppable – This is the real secret to forming habits that will transform your life in 30 days. I bust the myth that it takes 21 days to form a habit.

Chapter ten – The miracle morning 30 day life transformation challenge and fast start kit – After you learn how to effectively implement a habit, we break it down into a 30 day miracle morning life transformation challenge and I give you a 10 page challenge that allows you to customize it to fit your lifestyle.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 09:40

Notable Quotes From The Book

“The number one cause of unfulfilled potential of regret and of struggle is never deciding that now matters more than any other time in your life because it does.” – Hal Elrod

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:34)

I was a radio DJ until I got into sales where I was one of the youngest sales rep ever inducted into the companies’ hall of fame. I broke a bunch of sales records and thought that I was going to do that forever. I was in a horrific car accident, died for six minutes, broke 11 bones and told I would never walk again. I bounced back from that and went on to write a couple of bestselling books, became a coach and a motivational speaker.

It was never intended to be a book, it was written out of responsibility to share my experiences with other people. I did research and created what seemed to be the ultimate morning ritual and within two months of doing it I more than doubled my income.
