A summary of things you should know about 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do according to Amy Morin:

Introduction

In this episode Amy Morin reveals all her insights on 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do where she helps you train your brain for success and happiness.

In her book Morin combines interesting stories with simple solutions that will take your outlook on life to the next level when it comes to health, wealth, and relationships. The goal of the book is to teach you how to overcome the bad habits that suppress success, how to strengthen your mental capacity, how to cope with the setbacks of life, and how to avoid negative behaviors.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs that are tired of feeling sorry for their selves, being jealous of other people’s success, and holding personal grudges from failure.

The Book’s Unique Quality (5:06)

There are some other books on mental toughness but I found that a lot of times a lot of people focus on being tough instead of acting strong. I don’t know of any other books on the market that are specifically about mental strength and how to become stronger regardless of whether your goal is to become strong in your personal life or your business.

The Best Way To Engage (5:54)

My book is divided up into 13 chapters, one chapter for each of those 13 things. I find that some people focus specifically on the chapter that affects them most but you can very well read straight through.

The Reader’s Takeaway (17:13)

The biggest thing is to change the way we think. We know that if people want to change the way we feel we have to change how we think and change how we behave. One simple way to do that is to practice gratitude on a regular basis.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (6:56)

My book starts out with the introduction which gives a little about my personal journey and the story behind it. And it also gives an overview of what mental strength really is and explains why I talk about what mentally strong people don’t do.

From there we dive into the 13 chapters which focus on each of the 13 things. The first one is that mentally strong people don’t waste time feeling sorry for themselves. For every moment you spend focusing on the problem you can’t look at a solution and it keeps you stuck and you don’t move forward.

Chapter two talks about how mentally strong people don’t give away their power. And by that I mean it’s a combination of emotions and blame other people for the things we do. Sometimes just changing our language and the way we view things can make a big difference in recognizing the choices we have in everyday life.

Chapter three is that mentally strong people don’t shy away from change. We all like to stay in our comfort zones but when we do that we don’t grow better and take on new opportunities and become the people we won’t to be in life.

Chapter four is that mentally strong people don’t waste energy on things they can’t control. If we put our energy into the things we can control we’d be much better prepared for if something bad does happen.

Chapter five is that mentally strong people don’t worry about pleasing everyone. So often I think it becomes a problem where people lose sight of their values.

Chapter six is about how mentally strong people don’t fear taking calculated risks. You need to figure out how to accurately calculate the real risk and when you do that you can’t make choices that aren’t so scary anymore.

Chapter seven is that mentally strong people don’t dwell on the past. The solution is to figure out how to make peace with the past and sometimes that’s a matter of letting go or forgiving.

Chapter eight is about how they don’t make the same mistakes over and over. We all know that it would be great if we learned from our mistakes the first time but sadly we don’t and so it’s all about figuring out how to learn from each one.

Chapter nine is that mentally strong people don’t resent other peoples success. It’s usually easy to be happy for other people when you are on top but when you feel like you are on the bottom it seems to be a lot harder to be happy for others.

Chapter ten is that mentally strong people don’t give up after their first failure.

Chapter eleven is that mentally strong people don’t fear alone time and what I mean by that it’s really about being alone with your thoughts.

Chapter twelve is that mentally strong people don’t feel that the world owes them anything.

Finally, chapter thirteen is about how mentally strong people don’t expect immediate results.

At the end of the book we have a conclusion that explains how to move forward and how to keep building mental strength on a daily basis.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 06:56

Notable Quotes From The Book (18:49)

“Never allow inaccurate beliefs about yourself to hold you back from reaching your greatest potential.” – Amy Morin

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:38)

I am a license clinical social worker and psychotherapist. I am also a college psychology instructor and a few years ago I started writing articles for the web and now I write for places like Forbes and Psychology Today.

It had started out as an article and then morphed into a book from there. The reason I had written the article was because of some personal issues that were going on in my life. As a therapist I inherently was interested in psychology and mental strength in general but back in 2003 my journey became personal. I had just bought my first house, I was married and things were looking good when my mother passed away suddenly from a brain aneurism and I had to figure out how to publicly help people still deal with their problems when I am very privately grieving. And if you fast forward to three more years my 26 year old husband died suddenly of a heart attack and again had to figure out how to go to work to help people with the same problems that I was facing. I knew then that I had to sort out the things and tools I needed to do to become the very best that I can so that I can balance these two things in my life. If you fast forward a few more years things were looking up and I decided to get remarried but shortly after that my father-in-law was diagnosed with terminal cancer and unlike the sudden death of my mother and husband this time I knew what was coming. That is when I sat down and wrote this list of 13 things mentally strong people don’t do to basically remind myself of the things that could hold me back in life if I allowed them to.

No matter if you’re an insomniac or an early-to-bed, early-riser type, we all have to start our day in a way that creates a sense of accomplishment. Morning routines are not one size fits all, we have to choose the one that works best for us. But we also desire wealth and wish to learn more from those who have been able to obtain it.

There are a wide range of options on how to start your day and the following are some that are favored by the wealthiest of people when they need a kick start. Let’s take a quick look at a few routines of very wealthy people:

1. Write Down What You Wish To Accomplish

The CEO of American Express, Kenneth Chenault, says that he makes a list at the start of every day, writing down the three things that he most wishes to accomplish in the next 24 hours. By having a list in front of you as a jumping off point, you too can make the necessary changes in your life.

It’s easy to have a vague idea in your head of what you wish to achieve, but when you make a list, it’s much easier to visualize the accomplishment. The sense of accomplishment that you feel inside as you cross items off of your daily to do list is just an added bonus.

2. Begin With Physical Activity

Many successful, wealthy people report that they start off their morning with brisk physical activity. This helps to wake up the brain so that they are constantly able to fire on all cylinders. Starting the day with exercise provides a person with more energy and keeps them from feeling tired throughout the day.

Vogue’s editor in chief, Anna Wintour, does not consider her day to have started until she has played an hour long tennis match. Wintour wakes up before 6 AM to do so. People who start their day with physical activity tend to be much more enthusiastic and highly motivated.

3. Check Social Media

While some may be surprised to see one of their most prized early morning routines end up on this list, there are many wealthy, successful people who also feel the need to check Twitter and Instagram as soon as they roll out of bed in the morning. This may be a time drain for some, but for others, this practice helps them to keep their finger on the pulse.

The editor in chief of Lucky magazine states that she checks Twitter every morning and avoids watching TV as much as possible. This strategy may not work for everyone except for those who are able to self-motivate.

4. Focus On The Customers

Craig Newmark, best known for founding Craigslist, says that he begins each day with a complete and total focus on customer service. Newmark is proof that no matter how far you rise, it is still extremely important to put the customer first. He even goes so far as to say that he thinks of himself as one of Craigslist’s customer service representatives.

In order to gain wealth and maintain it, sharpening your focus so that you can properly address any and all customer concerns is incredibly important. Otherwise, you could fall into the same habits that have derailed other CEOs.

5. Spend Time On Positive Visualization

Popular self-help guru Tony Robbins urges his acolytes to take 15 minutes at the start of each day and spend it visualizing positive occurrences in their life, even those that have not actually taken place yet. He also tells his clients that they must use the time to envision the things in their life that they are grateful for.

By doing so, a person is able to achieve greater self-certainty and increase their overall confidence. Many are skeptical of this practice, believing it to be too New Age and not grounded in reality. Those who are able to overcome their skepticism report far greater success in their day to day living.

6. Eat Those Frogs

Mark Twain has a quote about how everyone should start their day by consuming a live frog. That way, nothing else that takes place could possibly seem any worse than that. Obviously, this is meant to be a metaphor about tackling your most difficult tasks first. Taken literally, this piece of advice could lead to a great deal of trouble.

Getting your toughest tasks out the way early clears the way so that you can enjoy the rest of your day without having to worry about taking care of it later. Whether it’s getting up early to get your workout out of the way or dealing with difficult correspondence, there is no shortage of tasks that should be handled early. Otherwise, they have the ability to hang over you and take away from your overall level of enthusiasm.

7. Remain Informed

There is a wide range of ways to consume the news nowadays and the majority of wealthy, successful people have a way of remaining on top of all the latest information. A person does not maintain success by allowing themselves to fall out of the loop. Some may prefer to grab the local newspaper, others might leaf through the Wall Street Journal.

However you choose to keep yourself informed about the world around you, starting the morning with a healthy dose of information is how many of the world’s best and brightest get their day going. You never know when that valuable piece of information will come along and change your entire perspective.

In this episode Pete Wilkinson shares his book, Unstoppable where he shares his expertise on becoming super determined, motivated, and focused.

In his book Wilkinson provides a roadmap to eliminate procrastination, seeing plans all the way through, and doing more than you ever thought possible. The goal of the book is to help you focus your attention on key goals, improve the relationships in your business and personal life, learn how to be an effective leader, and build an action plan around your main strengths.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who want to be driven, determined, and unstoppable, yet lack the proper motivation techniques to make a move in the right direction.

The Book’s Unique Quality (2:52)

Unstoppable is a four part system and a process to becoming unstoppable. It isn’t just about giving you a couple of tips but rather the whole foundation of the book are my one, three, five action plan. It’s not just a book to read but I also answer some of your questions you might have and help you with the process. The main reason the book is different from others is because I am sharing a system that I have proven time and time again with other entrepreneurs on how to be unstoppable and make the most of yourself.

The Best Way To Engage (4:19)

This book is really designed to be read from front to back. I created four different parts of the book that you could jump into separately if you wanted to.

The Reader’s Takeaway (12:11)

You must answer the question if I was the very best version of me, what could I achieve. Once you answer that question you need to have a crystal clear vision of what success and happiness looks like for you and make that happen.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (5:26)

I built the book around four different parts. Part One I have called The Beginning and the reason just to go into the background of why I believe it’s important to develop an unstoppable attitude. I am very passionate about how important attitude is and I think you need to have a very process driven attitude that allows you to achieve what you’re capable of achieving. Part one emphasizes as to where you are now is not where you need to be. You don’t need to just stay where you are now if you want to improve. This first part frames and goes into detail on what I call the one, three, and five action plan which is the foundation of the unstoppable attitude system.

Part Two is where we really get into the detail and that’s where we start the foundation. We have various chapters in here and things emphasizing that the beginning is all about your habits and how successful people have successful habits. As we progress from the habits we then go into the actual components of the action plan which start with a crystal clear vision. In this section I share my vision and a hand written drawling of what my plan looked like. We talk about the different steps of creating a picture, describe what your perfect day look likes and imagine what life might look like when you achieve it. I show the reader a very systematic process of creating a vision by asking certain questions that would allow you to get a crystal clear vision. If you’re going to achieve this vision then you need to focus on three core objectives. Realizing that it’s not going to be an overnight thing but by breaking it down you are directing your attention exactly where you should be. The final part of the foundation process is the goal part. We all know we need goals but what I am suggesting in this system is to have five stepping stone goals for each objective. So what you have is a very simple vision up on top, you then have three core objectives sitting beneath that and then feeding from each core objective you have five goals.

We then look at key skills. I believe there are four key skills we need as entrepreneurs. We need to be better at leadership and I think we should start with self-leadership. We then need to look at personal organization; we then need to really focus on relationships and finally strength development.

Finally we look at Part Four which is the next 12 months. Here we do a review of various things, your product, your people, your team, and time. So what we are doing here is optimizing you to have the best next 12 months. And that’s where we go through a very simple process and we look at different levels of value. We look at how you need to go about making sure your products, team and time are right. It’s really from start to finish beginning with the idea of why to have this unstoppable attitude then showing you how to have an action plan to create a plan that fits on a single page so it’s very easy to use. From there we look at the execution skills and then finally looking at the next 12 months ahead.

Notable Quotes From The Book

“The key question many of us need to ask ourselves more often is if I was the very best version of myself what could I achieve?” – Pete Wilkinson

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:58)

I am primarily in the space of focus and consistency – taking action. Everything I do whether it’s with clients, speaking or workshops, is around the focus and consistency and using my skills. So it’s all around the space of how to be focused and consistent to get the results that you should really be getting.

I was sharing the system that the book identifies with my clients but really only making a small impact in the number of people I was reaching. I was getting a little frustrated that people were making some really good gains with the system but it wasn’t being shared enough. The idea of writing the book was to give them a system that could be shared to a large number of people and have an impact with someone that they have never met before.

Startupland by Mikkel Svane
