A summary of things you should know about Connect – The Secret LinkedIn Playbook according to Josh Turner:

Introduction

In this episode Josh Turner takes a deep dive into his book, Connect, where he shares some unique LinkedIn strategies to generate leads, build relationships, and increase sales.

In his book Turner provides a step-by-step guide that outlines simple LinkedIn activities that are designed to advance your business when it comes to building influence, finding partnerships, and business growth. The goal of the book is to show you the most effective ways to use LinkedIn, how to use LinkedIn for marketing purposes, and how to build a profile that attracts paying clients.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who run or plan to run a business that involves building a network of relationships and need help developing a social networking strategy on LinkedIn.

The Book’s Unique Quality (6:07)

I wanted to make sure that this was not just another LinkedIn tips and tricks type of book. This book is going to stand the test of time because it’s not based on how you use a certain tool it’s based on a philosophy and a way of marketing that just so happens to leverage LinkedIn. It’s a time tested way to generate lots of leads online by building relationships.

The Best Way To Engage (7:19)

This book can be read straight through or you can cherry-pick your way around.

The Reader’s Takeaway (15:34)

If you take the time to build the relationship first then when you ask for a phone call or a meeting your response rate is going to go way up.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (8:11)

The book starts out with comparison to what my business looked like before and what it looks like now that I’ve designed and applied this system. This is the jumping off point for explaining the system and why it works.

One of my favorite chapters in the book is Caveman Psychology where I walk you through an evolutionary psychology and why it works. I set the stage with the things that you need to do from a psychological standpoint to position yourself properly to earn the right for someone to even agree to take a meeting with you. I walk you through a new marketing blueprint for how to put these things in place online and specifically we dive really deep into LinkedIn and into webinars. I explain how to set up the LinkedIn campaign that will achieve all of this all the way from the basics to some of the more advanced strategies. We go all the way from identifying your target prospects, to then bringing them into your funnel, to working them through processes that will generate leads.

I also dive really deep into webinars and the reason behind that is because when I look at my business, the growth that we’ve achieved, and the successes we’ve had is fueled in big part by webinars. It’s a combination of utilizing LinkedIn in this very systematic type of way but also webinars. My business generates somewhere between eight to ten thousand webinar registrations every month. I walk you through what has been successful for us so that you can determine how you can incorporate webinars not only into your business but then how to integrate them with LinkedIn campaign. This will get you in front of the right prospects and allow you to use it as a great lead generating tool. These are the two broad components of the book and within them we talk about positioning yourself as a leader and the tactical things you can do within LinkedIn to achieve that.

We talk about how to really develop relationships the right way by sharing content and the right way to put it all together so that it positions you above the fray. We talk a lot about LinkedIn group strategies and how you can leverage a group to generate a ton of leads. We talk about how to track all of this activity because when you have thousands of prospects that you’re working through these processes within LinkedIn you have to have a very organized structure for keeping tabs on it.

Finally, the chapter that you might get equal value from is a chapter on what to do once you are face to face or on the phone. I break down six types of sales calls that you will encounter as a result of utilizing the process. I give you scripts as well as the general framework for how to conduct those calls to position yourself in the best light and stay classy but at the same time have a productive sale call.
The end stage is getting people all the way through the funnel of this system and getting them to the point where they agree to a phone call or meeting so that you can really talk business.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 08:11

Notable Quotes From The Book (17:44)

“When a copier sales person cold calls a purchasing manager whom he has never met is it any surprise that the purchasing manager will most likely never return that call?” – Josh Turner

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:57)

I started using LinkedIn for business development way back in 2006 and at the time I was a CFO of a construction and manufacturing company in St. Louis. Unfortunately that company was hit hard by the down turn in the economy and it was forced to shut its door’s which was when I decided to go work for myself. I first started working as a freelance CFO and one of the ways I was able to grow the business was leveraging LinkedIn, not only the network I had built for myself prior but doing more things proactively. Fast forward to 2011 I had a couple of clients that I was helping in finance ask me about the different strategies I was using with LinkedIn. After trying to explain these strategies we realized it would just be easier if I did the work for them and that was when I built Linked Selling . Now we have a team of 14 with clients all over the world in all sorts of industries and we’ve had a lot of fun along the way.

This book is the playbook that my company has used to triple our revenue every year for the last three years and the book that we’ve used to generate millions of additional revenue for our private clients. I figured there were a lot of other businesses out there that would want to get their hands on this. The inspiration was that when I first started working for myself in 2010 I was frustrated and getting very little out of networking because most of the people weren’t my prospects. This book and the systems that I walk you through are the systems that I designed in response to that. I figured out how to use LinkedIn to keep my name in front of thousands of targeted prospects and then leverage a relationship building a process that works the reader through a set of messages that culminates in a request for a meeting or phone call. It’s taken us a few years to perfect the system but now we are there and I am super excited to get this message out to those who it will make a big difference for.

A summary of things you should know about Unselling according to Scott Stratten:

Introduction

In this episode Scott Statten takes a deep dive into his book, Unselling, where he reveals the secrets of what really influences purchasers’ decisions.

In his book Stratten provides the keys to unlocking the mysteries of successful customer service and debunks a lot of nonsense that other marketers and marketing books talk about. The goal of the book is to teach you the most effective form of selling, how to create loyal, recurring customers, how to overcome customer service failures, and where to focus your marketing efforts.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who have an understanding of sales and marketing, but are looking for a better, longer lasting solution to keep customers buying from you.

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:04)

It has no cover and that alone should make it stand out. The brand is not about what we think it is, it’s about the customer and our book reflects that.

The Best Way To Engage (4:38)

You can read it straight through but it’s written in a way that you can also jump around whenever you want.

The Reader’s Takeaway (13:59)

Everybody in the chain matters.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (5:23)

The main pillar of Unselling is the customer pulse. People think we have two types of customers in this world, we have customers and we have noncustomers. The key thing with the customer pulse is that we really have three types of customers ecstatic, static, and vulnerable.

Ecstatic types of clients are the ones that refer others, the ones that renew and sing our praises in social media. Static customers are the ones who are there, they’ll probably renew, but they are only our customer because they haven’t seen or heard of a better solution to their need.

The vulnerable customers are the ones that are looking for an out and this process could be a day, a year, or even five years. The problem is we usually don’t find out we have lost a customer until we have lost them and then we do everything possible to try and get them back.

We have to understand that customers can be customers for life if we just value them. The book takes you through examples of our own personal experience, to examples that are out there in the world, and then to practical ways to keeping and maintaining your customers.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 05:23

Notable Quotes From The Book (16:23)

“You treat your customers, and your employees, and your vendors all the same with the utmost respect and the utmost care and that will pay you back in spades.” –Keri Smith

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:07)

I am the un everything, unmarketing, unselling, co-host of the unpodcast, and unsatisfied with the way things are being done in business.

I realized after being an old-school sales and training manager back in the day, that sales were focused on the transaction. You put all your eggs in the sales basket and once you had the transaction we handed it off to some other department and that’s where we kind of dropped the basket and all the eggs broke. The point I am trying to make is that everybody is in sales because the way to lead to future sales is to make sure that we make the customer ecstatic to be part of our organization and that starts at the transaction all the way through to the delivery.

In this episode Jonathan Milligan takes a deep dive into his book, The 15 Success Traits of Pro Bloggers, where he shares a roadmap to becoming a full-time blogger.

In his book Milligan provides a simple blueprint with actionable summaries of the 4 significant habits that aspiring bloggers should add to their daily routine if they want to become online professionals. The goal of the book is to teach you what it takes to achieve maximum results with your blog, how to get your blog noticed by more people, and what types of content generate the most traffic.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs that own or plan on owing an online based business and what to know the ins and outs of establishing a popular yet profitable blog.

The Book’s Unique Quality (4:33)

I was very specific in the beginning and I did not want to write another book about how to write a blog. My book is a business book first, it’s something someone can take and use as a self-development plan that you can fall into over the next couple of years.

The Best Way To Engage (5:20)

I would say that if you are just starting out as a blogger you should read it straight through. If you’ve been blogging for a while you might be interested to jump further to the actual processes.

The Reader’s Takeaway (11:08)

I would hope that the reader would walk away with the heart of the book. The heart of the book is that the best way to grow a business is teaching and serving an audience well.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (5:57)

At the very beginning of the book I share with you a way that you can get access to a one page colored PDF that I had designed that explains the essence of the whole book. This one page infographic is what I call The Blogger Success Pyramid. It’s got the 15 traits in a pyramid format and both my students and I use to help form and build our businesses. And so the chapters are divided into each of those traits.

The very bottom of the pyramid is what I call Tier One and it’s the mindset. The mindset is so important for us to be able to grasp the things that we need to get ahold of in order to achieve success. For many of us, we are going to act out of our thoughts. And so if our thoughts are defeating we are not going to take action. The five mindsets that I share are passion, resilience, confidence, consistency, and patience. You have got to have these five mindsets because without them you will not be able to stay with it over the long haul to achieve success.

In Tier Two we jump into what I think many people get hung up on, the habits. There are so many things to do that you don’t know where to focus your time and so I boil it down in the book to four simple keystone habits. The first habit is the create habit; this habit is to use text, audio and video to get your message out to the masses. The second habit is the capture habit which is the art form exchange of value for e-mail addresses. Building that e-mail list is so critical and so important. From there you have the compile habit and that is where you package your knowledge and perspective into products and services. And then you move into the connect habit which is your ability to connect with other people and build community with other passionate influencers.

In Tier Three we go over systems and there are three traits in this tier which are people, processes, and plans. When you get the right people, you create the right processes that you can outsource, and you put the right plans in place, you can begin to scale your business way beyond yourself.
And finally, the top tier is the Leverage Tier and that’s how you stay on top. There are two essential traits to staying on top and those two traits are learning and listening. Learning is the ability to unlearn and sit at the feet of your peers. The second leverage point is listening and that is the constant awareness of the goals, passions, and struggles of your audience.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 05:57

Notable Quotes From The Book (12:38)

“What’s the ultimate result we want from all of this hard work? For me it’s not money, although I need money to live and reach my goals, it’s not fame or popularity, I find more fulfillment in stewarding the gifts Gods given me even if popularity never comes my way. The final success trait cannot be achieved as a goal; instead it’s a result of doing everything else well. It’s the ultimate gift from a lifetime of serving others, trust and authority. You are rich when you’ve earned trust and authority with your audience.” – Jonathan Milligan

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:29)

I started my career as a high school teacher and both of my parents were educators and so I thought that might be where I was going to land. After about three years of coaching and teaching, I loved the kids but I found that it wasn’t the right environment for me. I had a real entrepreneurial side to me and so I joined up with a startup company that was an executive search firm. I did that for about eight years and from there I got into blogging. Over the course of a couple years I ended up getting to a place where it could replace my job and now today it’s what I do. I am a fulltime blogger and I have two blogs that I manage.

I always had multiple e-mails asking questions of how I became a fulltime blogger and so I began thinking through how exactly I could teach this to others. After running it by friends and family I boiled it down to what I considered 15 success traits.

A summary of things you should know about Mindsharing according to Lior Zoref:

Introduction

In this episode Lior Zoref takes a deep dive into his book, Mindsharing, where he shows you how to master the art of crowdsourcing everything.

In his book Zoref offers several practical tools for unleashing powerful creativity that you can get from a large crowd as well as success stories of several people who succeeded by using crowdsourcing. The goal of the book is to help you use social media to learn things faster, build stronger relationships with people online, and understand the intricacies of the digital age today.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who are unfamiliar with social media and want to know more about interacting with their friends, followers and influencers.

The Book’s Unique Quality (5:31)

To my knowledge there isn’t any book that explores what is happening in this era other than my book. My book is tapping into this specific area on how crowd sourcing and social networks can help us solve problems and think better.

The Best Way To Engage (7:30)

I recommend reading the introduction because it will give you a great overview about what to expect from the book. The book is divided into four parts and I think that each part is one that you can jump in and out of.

The Reader’s Takeaway (18:45)

I would say that We are stronger than Me. When you think with a big crowd it’s basically as if you are upgrading your brain. There is another way in order to solve big problems and it is by going to big crowds and asking questions.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (8:45)

I start by telling you how crowdsourcing can help anyone in their career from startup to big organizations and in the first part I give many examples/stories of this.

Then there is a part about how we can use crowdsourcing in our personal lives. In this part I tell you a story about a startup called CrowdMed who is using crowdsourcing to solve medical mysteries.

There is another chapter where I talk about the How To which is basically going to places where there are big crowds of people and asking questions.

The last part is my favorite part and it’s about making dreams come true. For me it all started a few years ago when I started my PhD. I told a friend of mine that maybe one day I would present my research on the TED stage and my friend told me I had a better chance at winning the lottery. When my Facebook friends heard that they decided they would help me make this dream come true and so we did. And then I tell other stories of how inspiring people used crowdsourcing to make their dreams come true also.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 08:45

Notable Quotes From The Book (20:59)

“Great minds think alike but clever minds think together.” – Unknown

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:00)

I am 44 years old, married with three kids. I was obsessed with technology early in age and became a computer scientist and studied computer programming. From there I worked for Microsoft for 14 years. Right before turning 40 I hit my midlife crisis and I decided to retire from Microsoft and started on my journey to get my PhD. In the last few years I have been consulting to brands and startups that are using crowdsourcing as a strategic tool to innovate.

The inspiration is a story I heard a few years ago about Debra who lives in New York and at that time her four year old son Leo had fever. So Debra went to the doctor and told her it’s probably strep but after leaving the doctor she had a bad feeling about it so she took a picture of her sons face and posted it on Facebook. She began to get a lot of messages that said her son might have a very rare illness that could kill him. Immediately she took her son to the hospital to check to see if he had that illness. After checking they concluded that it was in fact the disease, started treatment immediately and were able to save his life. After hearing this story I did my research and wrote the book about the power of big crowds.

A summary of things you should know about Evergreen according to Noah Fleming:

Introduction

In this episode Noah Fleming takes a deep dive into his book, Evergreen, where he reveals a way to create longer lasting relationships with customers.

In his book Fleming provides a practical roadmap packed with strategies, stories, and tips on improving your business by cultivating deeper, more profitable relationships with your customers. The goal of the book is to teach you 3 significant rules that create loyal customers, how to build effective loyalty programs, and how to incorporate social media into any loyalty plan.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who run a business based on building relationships with customers and need a simple guide for creating the best customer loyalty system.

The Book’s Unique Quality (4:11)

What makes it different is that I start long before the point of closing the sale. I believe that customer loyalty and customer relationships start long before the sale has ever been made. Evergreen provides a deep look at what happens before the sale, to the point of the sale, and then into what I call happily ever after.

The Best Way To Engage (5:40)

The book is broken down into two parts. The first half of the book is a very strategic framework and so I recommend reading this part because I think it’s applicable to any type of business. That said if you’ve already got a successful business you can certainly hop to the second half of the book which is very tactical in nature with very specific action steps you can take.

The Reader’s Takeaway (13:18)

I want the reader to understand that everything you do is equally about getting and equally about keeping the customer. Just understanding this one principle can change your entire outlook of your company, business, or career.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (6:58)

As I mentioned there are two sections of the book. The first half is a strategic framework which I call The Three C’s of Evergreen Company. Let me explain to you how this started. When I started to look at my own company I had subscription base services, I had my own online community, and I had really strong retention and loyalty. So I wondered if what I was doing was something I could apply to my own clients and so I did. I started to work with clients and I started to help them implement this strategic framework. Then as I started to research the book years later I started to look at bigger companies and I wanted to figure out the commonality between great companies that have truly loyal customers and that seem to thrive all year long. I started to notice there were three key things happening with the best entrepreneurs, the best solo professionals, and the best companies and they had these three things just right. So the first C is character and character is why you do what you do and I walk you through very specific steps to really build your character. The second C is community; the best companies in the world right now are building a strong sense of community amongst their customers. The third C is content and is the shorthand that I am using as the thing you give for money. So your content is your core product, you core service and the big mistake is to believe that content is enough to bring people back again and again. Content is not enough to bring people back so you want to make sure your character and your community really boasts up your content.

Once you define those three C’s then you can get serious about learning about your customer base. In the next half of the book I walk you through how to learn about your different types of customers which I call Archetypes. This is where you start to tailor your sales and marketing messages to them on a much more personal level. I start to try and help people break away from the addiction mentality and help you really focus on where your ideal customers are right now. It’s about how to most effectively, efficiently, and affordably reach them, attract them, and keep them as quickly as possible.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 06:58

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:23)

I am a Canadian who lives in Ontario Canada. I am also a father of two girls and married ten years now. In the business side of my personal life I am a strategic marketing consultant. I work with small to midsize companies but also with entrepreneurs personally mentoring and coaching them.

I saw in my clients an addiction to the new customer mentality that we need to focus all of our efforts into driving people through the doors. I knew there had to be a better way to do it which inspired me to do my research and write about my findings.

A summary of things you should know about YouthNation according to Matt Britton:

Introduction

In this episode Matt Britton gives an in-depth preview of his book, YouthNation, where he shows what it takes to stay connected, agile, authentic, and relevant in today’s marketplace.

In his book Britton provides an effective marketing plan with practical advice and strategies for keeping your business brand relevant to the new economy of youth-driven cultures. The goal of the book is to teach you how to use psychographics to target younger markets, craft a brand story that will attract new target markets, build highly engaging online communities, and stay ahead of the competition.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who run a business that deserves the attention of millennials, but are having difficulty marketing, hiring, and communicating with the younger generation.

The Book’s Unique Quality (2:51)

I think that I’ve had a very unique experience in spending a lot of time in the board rooms of major corporate marketers and because of that I’ve been able to understand their challenges and needs. I’ve also spent a whole lot of time on college campuses, nightclubs, and places where this culture is really being built, and so I think the experiences I’ve had within being on both sides really has led to an invaluable resource.

The Best Way To Engage (3:35)

I think every chapter provides a unique set of value in its own way and so the reader can go in and look at individual chapters and be able to get an understanding of the key principles. The front half of the book is written about the cultural changes that are being driven by millennials and the back half of the book talks about the marketing and advertising implications to that. So I think the reader can just look at the front part or back part depending on where they are looking to gain the most insights.

The Reader’s Takeaway (13:13)

I would want it to be that anybody who wants to succeed in business right now really needs to fully understand and embrace youth culture to do so. They need to understand that young people are changing the world and the decisions and lifestyle habits are the ones that are disrupting every industry. And in order for them to succeed they need to understand what’s going on with young people and stop ignoring it.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (4:18)

There is massive change going on now in the business landscape and it’s being driven by cultural changes in our population. Right now the big changes are being made not by decisions made in the boardrooms but by movements that are happening on the sidewalks by young, empowered millennials that are leveraging technology and social media to really change the world. These disruptions are causing changes in all corners of our economy and business world and I’ve broken them down to different principles which need to be understood by businesses and understood by marketers in order for them to succeed.

The first major changes that I’ve written about in the book I call from status symbol to status update and that’s basically talking about how millennials and the driving consumer is much more consumed than obsessed with experiences verses the possession and material items. So retailers and providers of goods really need to change the way they come to market and not so much focus on unique selling proposition of their products but of the experiences and stories that can be told from the consumption of their products and services.

I talk about changes in music and popular culture and the huge explosion of outdoor festivals driven by popularity in electronic dance music and how electronic dance music is a massive trend that’s not going away anytime soon and how brands can jump on it.

I talk about since the shift is moving away from the consumption of physical items to the consumption of experiences; young consumers are now focusing on the access of good verses the ownership of good. So it’s the rental or sharing economy and what does that mean and what companies have really thrived by creating marketplaces for the items instead of just traditional retail models.

I also talk about microeconomic changes that are being driven by millennials such as them not wanting to move to the suburbs and instead staying in major cities and the implications for them staying in the cities in terms of them being about to transact with one another. I talk about careers and the evolutions of careers and what millennials want from them.

I talk about the power of the crowd and how the crowd is an invaluable resource for companies that want to source best in class thinking and wisdom.
Lastly I talk about what all these changes mean to the future of marketing and advertising. I stay with television and how the television model with the adoption of all these new technologies is starting to become broken and how companies that have relied on the age old television model really need to reinvent themselves.

I talk about some of the new ways, since we can’t rely on television as much anymore, to reach consumers such as the creation of content and the value of storytelling. I talk about how brands can use data, the social and interest graph, and social media data to be able to actively target consumers.

Lastly I talk about the importance of people needing to be brands and personifying their brands.

My book is really a holistic view of all these changes that are going on and what I found in talking all over the world is that there is such a disconnect. Things that are sort of household names and household habits of millennials who are changing the world are still so out of reach and largely misunderstood by business decision makers and I am hoping this book provides a great resource to tie it all together.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 04:18

Notable Quotes From The Book (13:55)

“Experience is the new currency” – Matt Britton

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:07)

I am the founder and CEO of MRY which is an advertising agency focusing on digital and social technology to really help brands break through and be remarkable with their consumer.

I work with a lot of major corporate marketers and what I found over and over again with big brands is that there seems to be a major disconnect behind their knowledge of the marketplace as they exist today and really what’s going on in terms of the disruption and change that’s already being driven by youth. For me the book is really meant to be a roadmap for marketers and business decision makers to understand how to navigate the complex changes that are brought about by these youths driving the economy to ensure they are not left in the dust.

A summary of things you should know about 100 Days of Growth according to Sujan Patel:

Introduction

In this episode Sujan Patel takes a deep dive into his book, 100 Days of Growth, where he shares over 100 online marketing strategies that are used by top performing companies.

In his book Patel provides actionable techniques his company has used to help other businesses grow and teaches you step-by-step how to implement these growth strategies into your own business. The goal of the book is to help you improve your search engine optimization efforts, increase your lead generation results, eliminate ineffective digital marketing tactics, and much more.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who own an online business and are looking for an all-in-one guide for effective digital marketing tactics that will take their results from good to excellent.

The Book’s Unique Quality (2:58)

I have personally weeded out a lot of strategies and tried 300 things I include in the book. This book is not a long read and each tactic and page is easy to understand and something you can do yourself.

The Best Way To Engage (3:43)

It’s one of those books that you can jump in and out of.

The Reader’s Takeaway (6:13)

The principle that I want the reader to takeaway is that you should always be testing new concepts. I layout 100 and as you read the book you will probably find a few 100 more. You don’t have to spend months strategizing and planning, you just start doing.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (4:21)

From the book you are going to learn a lot of how to repeat and how to implement things like AB testing your homepage. You can read all this stuff on the web but this is specifically the one thing you need to AB test. If you are thinking about how to leverage your traffic more there are things like the exit intent popup. Or if you want to build a referral program there is a simple way to get started. This book is not the end all be all but simply a way for you to start and with a successful method. The book spins around a lot of different things that are all around getting more revenue from your internet business.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 04:21

Notable Quotes From The Book (7:30)

I don’t have a favorite quote but I’ll give you my favorite tactic listed in the book. It’s the first tactic and it’s just giving away a free company t-shirt. It’s such a simple thing and yes it cost money but I’ve personally made a little under a million dollars just from giving away free t-shirts from my agency.

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:05)

I’ve been doing digital marketing for 12 years now and worked with hundreds of clients helping them grow their traffic and revenue. Over the years I’ve worked on a lot of different ideas that have failed and a handful of things that have worked. My concept for the book is to put together my learnings and successes in a repeatable fashion.

I wanted to make something where people can follow along. Every tip and tactic is something you can do and ideally if you did one thing a day for the next 100 days you’re going to see some exponential growth. My inspiration was to take all my learnings of how to grow a business and make it useful, tactical, and actionable.

Other Books Recommended By The Author (9:44)

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:15)

What I set out to do was not write a marketing or social media book. There is a lot of scientific research and information in this book and I don’t base my suggestions or triggers on my gut feeling. I actually went through the actual science and 1,000 research studies to truly understand the subject at a fundamental level.

The Best Way To Engage (4:24)

I think that you can jump in and out but you are going to get the most benefit by reading it front to back.

The Reader’s Takeaway (14:54)

The one thing that I’ve learned from all the research I did and all the people I interview was the masters of attention don’t try to capture attention for themselves, they try to capture attention for their projects, passions, and ideas. I want people to think of attention as this positive tool for whatever they do.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (5:08)

The book is divided into two key sections and I’ll describe some of the key pieces and findings.

The first part is what I call The Three Stages of Attention and I go through the new model that I found for how attention works and how we should think of attention. Everybody seems to think of attention as this kind of short-term or reactionary thing or short-term focus but that’s not really the attention and the fundamentals. Attention is really a memory construct and it goes on three stages which are immediate attention, short attention, and long attention. With these three attentions I don’t think many people think about how to walk their audience through all three, they just focus on how to get initial attention. So I talk a lot about walking your audience through those three stages of attention.

The key and the structure of the book is around seven captivation triggers and these are the seven psychological triggers that kept coming up through my research that capture your attention across all three stages. The seven triggers are automaticity, framing, disruption, reward, reputation, mystery, and acknowledgement. Automaticity understands the automatic reaction we have to certain sights, sounds, and colors. Framing is about our frame of reference and how our frame of reference based on our world experience, really does change the way in which we pay attention. Disruption is that we pay attention to the people and things that violate our expectations. Then you have reward and the reward system is one that is not fully understood. Reputation is that we pay attention to reputable source specifically experts, authority figures, and the crowd. Mystery is one of the final triggers and it’s when we pay attention to incomplete story lines and thoughts. The most prayerful trigger of them all is acknowledgment and that is when we pay attention to the people and things that provide us with validation, empathy, and understanding.

Notable Quotes From The Book (16:12)

“Attention is the most important currency that anybody can give you. It’s worth more than money, possession, or things.” – Ben Parr

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:50)

I am the author of Captivology and also the founder of DominateFund which is an early stage venture fund that coaches startups on attention and how to capture attention for their products. My original claim to fame in the tech industry was that I was the co-editor and editor-at-large of Mashable.

I was initially inspired by entrepreneurs. When I first left Mashable and I started doing the venture fund and the kind of help that startups came to me for was all around attention. As I did my research I really came to realize that attention is the fundamental life blood of the modern economy and so that set me off the path of writing this book.

A summary of things you should know about Escape The Expected according to Tom Trush:

Introduction

In this episode Tom Trush takes a deep dive into his book, Escape the Expected, where he shares the secret psychology of selling to today’s skeptical consumers.

In his book Trush provides a step-by-step guide that teaches you marketing secrets you may have never heard of like what prospects don’t trust you, what pollutes the marketing world, and how to establish yourself as an authority in so much cluttered advertising. The goal of the book is to help you spend less time working, leverage your marketing better, and adapt to the constant changes in marketing.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who are spending more than half their time marketing a business or have no idea where to start when it comes to marketing.

The Book’s Unique Quality (4:13)

The difference in this book comes down to quick action items. The book is a little over 200 pages but you can get through it in one sitting.

The Best Way To Engage (5:14)

You can open up to any chapter and get a tip or strategy that you can implement immediately.

The Reader’s Takeaway (14:47)

Dare to be different because when your product or service marketing looks like everything else in its industry then you are forcing prospects to use price as a deciding factor when whether to buy your product or service.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (6:02)

This book has really short chapters and those chapters are broken down into three sections to create what I call The Trust Trilogy. I’ll tell you each piece of the trilogy and then we’ll dig in to each one. The first one is instead of marketing what you want to say, give your prospects what they need to succeed. Number two is trust requires consistent communication because it creates familiarity. And then number three is that your marketing must develop relationships before it can drive profits.

The first part of the trilogy, instead of marketing what you want to say give prospects what they need to succeed, ties into that consumers crave relationships with companies that they can trust these days. With today’s rapid technology development it has increased our interactions with other people and you have more ways to get in front of people now days and as a result we have more opportunities to attract prospects attention. The key is that you can have your prospects attention but that doesn’t necessarily mean you have their interest. Those who establish trust are the ones who get heard and that is what we dig into in this first section of the book.

The second part of the trust trilogy, trust requires consistent communication, the problem here is that so many business owners and entrepreneurs will only market when they need leads and market from a place of desperation. You prospects don’t care about your leads or you generating sales they just know that they have a problem to solve and they are looking for information in your marketing to solve that problem. When you are marketing your best bet is to market to people who have already expressed interest in what you offer.

The third part of the trust trilogy, marketing must develop relationships before you can drive profits, ties into a challenge that many business owners and entrepreneurs have. When they launch marketing campaigns they expect a significant and quick returns but those who consistently market realize that they take time especially when you have to educate your target market. In this third section I give you different ways on how you can consistently communicate with your audience and establish that trust over a long period of time. When you are creating your product you need to really think about what you want to be known for in your business because we operate in an economy today where you likely have more competitors than you can count.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 06:02

Notable Quotes From The Book (16:58)

“The most effective marketing often doesn’t look like marketing.” – Tom Trush

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:47)

I am a direct-response copywriter and I think sometimes you give that career name out there and people don’t necessarily understand what it is. The way I like to explain it is that I write marketing materials designed to generate response. One of the big things that I love about my job is figuring out why a marketing piece is poor or isn’t generating the response that people want.

Usually the way that I write is I stumble on marketing topics that interest me and then I’ll weave them into a theme. I wanted to give people some ideas for establishing trust in the marketing materials that you send out to attract leads and generate sales.

A summary of things you should know about The Predictable Profits Playbook according to Charles Gaudet:

Introduction

In this episode Charles Gaudet II shares all his insights on his book, The Predictable Profits Playbook, where he reveals a marketing approach that defies the principles followed by most entrepreneurs running businesses today.

In his book Gaudet provides well-researched marketing tactics utilized by larger well-known organizations that are very effective for any small business that wants to see significant growth. The goal of the book is to teach you how to win the competitive advantage in any market, improve your sales ratio dramatically, building a raving fan base, and generate higher recurring profits.

This book is for entrepreneurs who are well established in business and are tired of witnessing their organization generate small business profits when it could be generating large business profits.

The Book’s Unique Quality (5:39)

There are many different ways that you can grow a business but the one thing that’s missing is putting it all together in a formula that actually works. What we’ve done is essentially cut through a lot of the BS and put together what works and shed the light a bit on what doesn’t work.

The Best Way To Engage (6:52)

I designed it to be read from front to back and for the reader to master each idea one at a time.

The Reader’s Takeaway (16:04)

In today’s day and age the small business owner can compete with a big business playbook with a small business budget.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (8:14)

There are three different components at the 30,000 foot view that separates the companies that are achieving wild success in any economy and the companies that are still struggling. And at the 30,000 foot view it is broken down into three categories, it’s positioning, product, and promotion and the book goes deep into each one of those. Positioning is really about what you can do to establish yourself as the obvious choice among your competitors. So the first part of the book really focuses on what you can do to establish yourself as that obvious choice in your company. We talk about how to identify a unique advantage point.

The second component that we cover is the product which is about escaping the commodity trap. Inside this section we talk about how to remove price as part of the equation and position yourself as one of the highest price competitors and still have plenty of people happy to do business with you.

The last component of the book is really about promotion. The number one issue with entrepreneurs is that they rely very heavily on one or two and sometimes three ways of generating income for a company.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 08:14

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:02)

I’ve been an entrepreneur since the age of four, created my first multimillion dollar business at the age of 24. Entrepreneurship has more or less been in my blood all my life. Today I own a company where I help small business owners create predictable and ever increasing profits inside their business.

A lot of entrepreneurs are told that the secret to success is to work hard and I took that very literally where I would sit my alarm for 3:30am and I would work every waking hour of every day, seven days a week. It got to a point where the stress was causing severe chest pain and I found myself in the emergency room. The doctor told me that the issue was stress and it was literally trying to kill me which at that point I realized something had to change. I traveled all over the world studying and trying to figure out what were some of the common denominators where some succeed and others failed. Collectively we connected the dots and made a book from that information.profi
