A summary of things you should know about Refire! Don’t Retire according to Ken Blanchard:

Introduction

In this episode Ken Blanchard takes an in-depth look into his and Morton Shaevitz book, Refire! Don’t Retire, where they share a story of what it takes to make our elder years more meaningful.

In their book Blanchard and Shaevitz reveal years of research and experience through an exciting, humorous, and practical story of how an elder couple was able to get the best out of their lives. The goal of the book is to teach you unique ways to better your relationship, improve your thinking, rejuvenate your health, become more passionate, and seize new opportunities worth living for.

This book is perfect for seasoned entrepreneurs who are approaching retirement and are looking for a way to keep up their energy levels in order to make their life more enjoyable.

The Book’s Unique Quality (12:14)

Number one it’s short and easy to read, number two it’s a story, and three I give the reader a lot of chances to reflect on it all.

The Best Way To Engage (9:54)

Since all my books are short I recommend you read it all the way through because it will only take about an hour to read.

The Reader’s Takeaway (9:02)

The big thing I would want the reader to understand is the importance of growing and learning. I believe that growing and learning is like oxygen to a deep sea diver and without it you’re in trouble. No matter your age you should always keep going and add zest to your life.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (4:05)

I write parables and it’s about a couple that goes back to their 45th high school reunion and they are a little disappointed that so many of their classmates look at aging as a sentence rather than an opportunity. And there is an old teacher of theirs who ended up going and getting a doctors degree who invites them both to come see him. After going to see him they discover that there are four areas that we ought to all look at. The first area of refiring is emotional relationship wise and we ask the question are you doing the same thing with the same people in the same way? And have you met any new people? What are you doing to get out of your comfort zone?

The second area is figuring out what you are doing to refire intellectually.

The third area is your physical self which is very important.

Finally we talk about what you want to do to refire spiritually and who you really want to be in the world.

Refire is about getting zest in your life on an ongoing basis and making your life exciting no matter what your age is.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 04:05

Notable Quotes From The Book (10:56)

“Refire! Don’t Retire. Make the rest of your life the best of your life.” – Ken Blanchard

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:10)

I was a college professor who came out to San Diego for a one year sabbatical leave when I ran into the group called The Young Presidents Organization after doing sessions for them they adopted me in and encouraged me to start my own company now known as The Ken Blanchard Companies. We are in the leadership development business and our hope and dream is that someday everyone everywhere will be influenced by somebody who is making a difference in the world.

When I turned 65 I was on the fall with Zig Ziglar who invited my wife and I to the 59th anniversary of his 21st birthday. When I asked him if he was going to retire his response was ‘I’m refiring, not retiring’ and I thought wow what a great concept.

A summary of things you should know about Overwhelmed according to Brigid Schulte:

Introduction

In this episode Brigid Schulte shares her insights on her book, Overwhelmed, where she the factors contributing to our collective sense of being overwhelmed, seeking insights, answers, and inspiration.

In her book Schulte shares the story of what she found while traveling across Europe to understand how countries accommodate working parents while investigating companies that are trying to invent a new kind of workplace. The goal of the book is to provide you with practical advice on how to make better use of each day and open your eyes to why we live and work the way we do.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who are determined to exhaust themselves for work but find themselves becoming overwhelmed with stress and busyness.

The Book’s Unique Quality (6:21)

What really differentiates my book is that it really looks at the big picture and how interconnected everything is. I wanted to know why things are the way they are and how they could be better.

The Best Way To Engage (9:47)

I wrote the book very intentionally that you can read it any number of ways because I understand that people are busy. So you can read from start to finish or you can jump around.

The Reader’s Takeaway (23:07)

You have to take a moment to pause and disrupt the cycle of busyness that’s out there. To be truly productive, to be truly efficient, and true to yourself, you have to take a moment and pause.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (13:04)

The book is divided into five sections. The first section I call Time Confetti because when I first started this journey that’s what it felt like; just do everything all at once in little tiny scraps of time that were exploding all over the place. The first chapter explains how it felt to live in what I call this time confetti. I felt inadequate at work, at home, and that I didn’t have time to do anything and so I really explore that.

I look at the question of leisure; what is leisure time and who has ever had it? I look at the history of leisure and how it’s different for men and woman and also of people with different economic needs. I explore the question of busyness; we tend to think of being busy as the way we show our value. I found a researcher in Fargo, North Dakota who studies busyness and the fast pace of life and I spend time with her at a focus group she set up. The last part of this chapter I look at the consequences of us being overwhelmed and I went to the Yale Stress Center and looked at some fascinating research that they are doing about how stress is affecting our brain.

The next part of the book is divided into Work, Love, Play, and Time. In the work section I talk about policy, I have a section about the ideal worker norm, and a section called When Work Works. In the love section I talk lot about our gender roles and what many sociologist call The Stalled Gender Revolution; why women are still doing twice the housework and three times the childcare. In the play section I went to Denmark to understand what is going on in Denmark that enables people there to have so much leisure time and what I found was very interesting. The last part of this chapter looks at play and why it’s important and the science behind it.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 13:04

Notable Quotes From The Book (24:26)

“Time is the coin of your life. You spend it; do not allow others to spend it for you.” – Carl Sandburg

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:35)

I have been a longtime reporter for The Washington Post and been a journalist for most of my adult life. I have covered a wide variety of things throughout my career. I am married and the mom of two kids who are now 13 and 16. I live in Alexandria Virginia and grew up in Portland Oregon.

Overwhelmed was a completely accidental book. Through my career I have always wanted to write a book. There are lots of journalists out there and that’s sort of a big dream that they all have but you just get so busy and you don’t really have time to think about it. I was part of this group in The Washington Post where we were looking at a readership numbers and we were noticing a big gap between male and female readers. We found that more men were reading the newspaper and before women were and the reason why that is important is that women over 50 have always been the most loyal newspaper readers. So we put together what we call The Women’s Reader Committee and we wanted to understand why women are not reading the paper and how do we bring them back? This committee was made up of me and all other women. The first thing we did was roll our eyes because we as women know that we don’t have time in the mornings to read the newspaper. And it became this sort of confessional about just how crazy our lives were. From there I did a time study and to my surprise found that we have all this leisure time we aren’t aware of which led me to writing this book.

It’s my voice. I’m not trying to show up as anybody else. I give the reader permission to follow their passions and if they don’t know what that is this book will give you tools to help you discover it.

The Best Way To Engage (4:24)

I think the best way to read it is from front to back but there is no doubt you can open up a chapter that relates with you and dive right in.

The Reader’s Takeaway (14:37)

Don’t you dare think that you’re not good enough or it’s too late. The one principle that I want the reader to take from this book is the permission that you can have what you want.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (5:25)

The book is written in two parts. The first part I call The Journey and the second part is called Do Something Different.

In the first part that I call The Journey I am sharing with the reader their own journey. When someone is telling us their story there is always pieces of it that we can relate to. So the very first chapter I call A Short Story and what that chapter entails is I share my journey as a television report. I really believed that this was something I wanted to do but I quickly out grew it because I recognized I wasn’t fully embracing everything about me. I share how I pushed to get that very first job as a reporter and how quickly I realized that it wasn’t for me.

The second chapter is titled There is No Such Thing as Instant Gratification. This follows my stories because I, like so many others, really believed that if I wanted something I could get it and get it fairly quickly. Our culture teaches us that if we don’t get it quickly than maybe we are doing it wrong or maybe it’s not for us. So I talk about how there really is no such thing as instant gratification.

In chapters three, four, and five I talk to the reader about giving yourself permission to trust those voices within and trying to not listen to the voices on the outside.

Chapter six I call Follow the Signs and what I talk about is how to dig deeper to discover what those truths, talents, and desires are.

In the last part of the book I documented a two week stay at a Buddhist temple where I felt the most lost and confused. I did the craziest thing at the time which was to lock myself up in the Kadampa Meditation Center to take in a spiritual quest so that I could clear the cobwebs and understand what it is that I wanted. The bottom line is if we ignore our truth or give us reason as to why we can’t explore what we love than we are choosing to live an excruciating painful life. We are choosing to live in this box that society wants us to live in and not our own.

Notable Quotes From The Book (16:00)

“ It doesn’t matter who you are, how old you are, where you came from, what your income is like, whether or not you have an education, where you live, what you’ve done in your past, none of it matters. You can still have, do or be anything that you want. The only limitations you face are the ones you put before you.” – Joleene Moody

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:37)

I’m a passion shift coach, an author, and a speaker. Basically what I do is I guide people to the place that they really need to be, and want to be, and desire to be. I’m also a business coach and I help people take their desires and find a stage so that they can share their message. I’m a voice for other people that have lost their own and live the life that they were meant to live.

I worked as a television reporter and anchor for 10 years and I didn’t love it. I was one of those people that merely existed in life. I wrote this book for other people that are afraid to leave the security of their life to explore what they really want to do.

A summary of things you should know about 6 Months to 6 Figures according to Peter Voogd:

Introduction

In this episode Peter Voogd shares his book, 6 Months To 6 Figures, where he reveals the exact strategies he’s used to go from dead broke to over 6 figures in 6 months in multiple industries.

In his book, Voogd gives you real world, tactical strategies to maximize your income, get large projects done in less time, and create the perfect lifestyle for you. The goal of the book is to help you enjoy higher levels of fulfillment, more passion, increased energy, and constant achievement.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who are tired of an inconsistent income, have low productivity, and don’t have enough time to get things done, but are serious about becoming successful.

The Book’s Unique Quality (6:23)

Everything is based on experience, results, and past succeed and failure. It’s the no sugarcoating way to get to where you want to be. And it’s real world tactical strategies from my 10 years of experience. I also have a real authentic and raw understanding of what it takes to motivate and inspire the millennials and leaders of today.

The Best Way To Engage (9:16)

This book is designed to help you create 6 figures in 6 months but every single chapter has questions and a worksheet that you can go through and fill out. Once you read each chapter I want the reader to implement the concepts, read the chapter again, and implement until you see results. Once you see results in your life and business then you can go to the next chapter.

The Reader’s Takeaway (21:53)

You have to understand the power of focusing on mastery verses overload. Those who have more than three priorities really don’t have any. People are so overloaded with information and the second you become overwhelmed you seek distraction. The number one reason why most people don’t succeed is because they never have ever told themselves that now matters.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (10:57)

Since I already explained chapters one and two I will start with chapter three. Chapter three is the money mindset and what money really matters. So the big focus is getting in the right mindset to attract money and I go through eight very tactical strategies on how to make sure you’re maximizing your income in the most efficient, intentional, and effective way possible.

From there I go to the actual six steps to six figures and I do a broad spectrum on my story and how I came about. The first must is absolute clarity. When I was broke and struggling I realized I need to get clear on who I was, who I wasn’t, what my strengths were and what I wanted. It’s easy to make decisions when you determine what your values are so I realized that I hated being broke and I knew I didn’t want to settle for a normal job or work for someone else. In this part of the book I walk the read through a 90 day challenge where they pick their goals for the month and they figure out the most top 10 compelling reasons to hit those goals. I also talk about the power of reverse engineering. This is where you figure out your ideal six month outcome.

After you have absolute clarity, you got to increase your most important account which is your confidence account. Everybody has a confidence account inside them and based on that confidence account is what they’ve accomplished or haven’t accomplished. So I go through the biggest tactics and comprehensive tips on how to build your confidence. I talk about the biggest thing you can do to build your confidence is choose growth in the moment.

The third aspect I talk about is shifting your circle of influence. I walk the reader through an activity I learned at a Tony Robbins business mastery event that made the whole event worthwhile. And I give away hundreds of thousands of dollar information in here. I also give the reader an outline e-mail on what you can send to millionaires and billionaires to reach out to and get a response.

After you shift your confidence you then want to make sure that you have consistent energy and motivation. I go through energy tactics and how to maximize your energy and motivations. Those who don’t make time for exercise and energy will eventually have to make time for illness. I realized that no matter how successful you are, if you don’t have energy, you have nothing.

Next is about peak performance secrets of the world’s greatest. I’ve studied peak performance for 10 years and I’ve put my best 10 tactics in this section on 10 game changing productivity strategies that you can use right away to really help your results.
The next chapter is crafting your perfect result rituals. And what I’ve realized is the amount of stress people have in their life is in direct correlation to the lack of systems or rituals they have in place. So I literally go through how to create rituals to make sure you have topnotch habits.

Lastly I talk about how to continually grow and how to make sure you’re becoming who you need to become to build a world class life. This is not just how to make six figures, it’s how to sustain it year after year and how to build a champion type world class life that is inspiring for others as well.

Notable Quotes From The Book (23:57)

“Never let somebody who is giving up on their dreams talk you out of yours.” –Peter Voogd

“Let your vision guide you not your current circumstances.” – Peter Voogd

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:40)

I am a serial entrepreneur and I have been running businesses since I was 15 when I started an eBay business. I wasn’t always the best student or involved in school but I really had a niche in entrepreneurship and business. I got into direct sales when I was 20-21 and I did that for a while when I worked my way up to being a district manager where I was running a sales team. I actually had some pretty big failures along the way and learned a lot of my successes from my failures. I was able to go from dead broke and stressed to earning my first six figure income and do it over and over going.

It really came from experience and me training close to 5,000 young professionals and seeing where our society was heading and being in school not learning anything that really helped me in the real world. I began to realize that this was needed at the highest level. I realized that I had to take it upon myself to create a blueprint that an entrepreneur or a young person can read and have 100% clarity on how to be successful in this challenging economy.

A summary of things you should know about Unstoppable according to Pete Wilkinson:

Introduction

In this episode Pete Wilkinson shares his book, Unstoppable where he shares his expertise on becoming super determined, motivated, and focused.

In his book Wilkinson provides a roadmap to eliminate procrastination, seeing plans all the way through, and doing more than you ever thought possible. The goal of the book is to help you focus your attention on key goals, improve the relationships in your business and personal life, learn how to be an effective leader, and build an action plan around your main strengths.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who want to be driven, determined, and unstoppable, yet lack the proper motivation techniques to make a move in the right direction.

The Book’s Unique Quality (2:52)

Unstoppable is a four part system and a process to becoming unstoppable. It isn’t just about giving you a couple of tips but rather the whole foundation of the book are my one, three, five action plan. It’s not just a book to read but I also answer some of your questions you might have and help you with the process. The main reason the book is different from others is because I am sharing a system that I have proven time and time again with other entrepreneurs on how to be unstoppable and make the most of yourself.

The Best Way To Engage (4:19)

This book is really designed to be read from front to back. I created four different parts of the book that you could jump into separately if you wanted to.

The Reader’s Takeaway (12:11)

You must answer the question if I was the very best version of me, what could I achieve. Once you answer that question you need to have a crystal clear vision of what success and happiness looks like for you and make that happen.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (5:26)

I built the book around four different parts. Part One I have called The Beginning and the reason just to go into the background of why I believe it’s important to develop an unstoppable attitude. I am very passionate about how important attitude is and I think you need to have a very process driven attitude that allows you to achieve what you’re capable of achieving. Part one emphasizes as to where you are now is not where you need to be. You don’t need to just stay where you are now if you want to improve. This first part frames and goes into detail on what I call the one, three, and five action plan which is the foundation of the unstoppable attitude system.

Part Two is where we really get into the detail and that’s where we start the foundation. We have various chapters in here and things emphasizing that the beginning is all about your habits and how successful people have successful habits. As we progress from the habits we then go into the actual components of the action plan which start with a crystal clear vision. In this section I share my vision and a hand written drawling of what my plan looked like. We talk about the different steps of creating a picture, describe what your perfect day look likes and imagine what life might look like when you achieve it. I show the reader a very systematic process of creating a vision by asking certain questions that would allow you to get a crystal clear vision. If you’re going to achieve this vision then you need to focus on three core objectives. Realizing that it’s not going to be an overnight thing but by breaking it down you are directing your attention exactly where you should be. The final part of the foundation process is the goal part. We all know we need goals but what I am suggesting in this system is to have five stepping stone goals for each objective. So what you have is a very simple vision up on top, you then have three core objectives sitting beneath that and then feeding from each core objective you have five goals.

We then look at key skills. I believe there are four key skills we need as entrepreneurs. We need to be better at leadership and I think we should start with self-leadership. We then need to look at personal organization; we then need to really focus on relationships and finally strength development.

Finally we look at Part Four which is the next 12 months. Here we do a review of various things, your product, your people, your team, and time. So what we are doing here is optimizing you to have the best next 12 months. And that’s where we go through a very simple process and we look at different levels of value. We look at how you need to go about making sure your products, team and time are right. It’s really from start to finish beginning with the idea of why to have this unstoppable attitude then showing you how to have an action plan to create a plan that fits on a single page so it’s very easy to use. From there we look at the execution skills and then finally looking at the next 12 months ahead.

Notable Quotes From The Book

“The key question many of us need to ask ourselves more often is if I was the very best version of myself what could I achieve?” – Pete Wilkinson

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:58)

I am primarily in the space of focus and consistency – taking action. Everything I do whether it’s with clients, speaking or workshops, is around the focus and consistency and using my skills. So it’s all around the space of how to be focused and consistent to get the results that you should really be getting.

I was sharing the system that the book identifies with my clients but really only making a small impact in the number of people I was reaching. I was getting a little frustrated that people were making some really good gains with the system but it wasn’t being shared enough. The idea of writing the book was to give them a system that could be shared to a large number of people and have an impact with someone that they have never met before.

We all know those successful people in our lives. Our bosses, our friends, or even clients who come in, they are all successful and you may wonder how they do it. You know they must be hard working, determined and goal oriented to have made it to where they are today. These are all traits that we can admire and look up, and hopefully take a lesson from. There are a lot of bad habits that get us off on the wrong track and away from success, but successful people know what bad habits to avoid and deter from so they stay on the path to success!

In order to be very successful here is a look at some bad habits that successful people avoid:

1. Waiting for opportunity

One of the worst habits that people have is waiting for success to land in your lap or looking for quick and easy schemes that never really work. Successful people know that you have to work hard for what you get, and you have to work even harder when you have a goal in mind. Waiting for opportunity to arise causes you to often lose sight of the end goal, and can often leave you questioning your choices when other opportunities have passed you by while you waited for one to land in your lap. Don’t sit around and wait, get up and go get it!

2. Letting other people get in the way

Not setting priorities or setting yours below someone else’s is one of the worst habits that successful people will avoid. They don’t let someone else’s set priorities interfere with their own. Successful people know what matters to them (promotions, projects, financial plans, goals) and they know that by letting other people’s priorities (be it values, promotions, etc.) get in their way, they are setting themselves up to fail. Of course, they know that giving a help hand isn’t a bad thing, but they don’t let anyone else’s pace slow them down!

3. Reluctant to change

One of the biggest downfalls of success that prosperous people avoid is resistance to change. The way the world grows and the technology in it and the process by which people get things done, it is always changing. Those who resist that change are often doomed to failure or to falling behind. Successful people know that change is a good thing and the growth potential that comes with it is huge! By allowing change to happen, grasping it and moving forward with it, you are advancing yourself and your goals.

4. Afraid to speak up

Successful people are those who are not powerless. They are strong-willed, willing to stand for what is right, and aren’t afraid to speak up with their opinions. By letting others dictate the way things go, you are not being successful. However, by giving good input, dictating the way you want things to go, and giving and articulate strong point of view, you are showing others a new way of seeing or doing something, and that is huge potential for your success.

5. Thinking negatively

Those who are successful are not pessimists who see the worst in the world. They take the world (and the people, places, and situations in it), see it for what it is, and set out on a path to make it better. They find the good in situations and if there is none, they create it. They push forward in tough times, showing that there is strength in leadership. A good outlook and a strong sense of willpower and well-being will set you on the right path to success and often will make others follow.

6. Being jealous

Being jealous of others successes will only hold you back in the long run. Being jealous often leads to endless self-doubt, questioning many decisions, and often making you stray from the successful path. Successful people are happy that others are succeeding and will praise them. They will listen to others successes in hopes that they can learn something new that will further their own achievements and get them closer to their goals. Being glad for someone else’s achievements eases the mind and heart, giving you an overall feeling of well-being, which will boost your internal go getter side!

7. Creating gossip

Those who are on the path to success do not talk down about others or gossip. Not only does gossiping lead to lies, mistruths, and twisted versions of things that have happened, but it makes you look less successful. To stand on the rumors of someone else makes you appear to be climbing the backs of those around you just so you get to the top. Successful people don’t gossip, they praise the works of others and give good impressions of others characters.

8. No planning or goal setting

Those who are successful have goals in mind. They know what they want and have made a plan to get there (and maybe have even made a few back up plans in case something doesn’t work out with their initial plan). They realize that there are no wrong turns, just more opportunities to learn something new, to see things in a different light, and to push yourself to get to that goal when things do get tough. Those who want it, will get it!

9. Being cocky

One of the best qualities about a successful person is their humility. They don’t tout their successes from the rooftops or make others feel beneath them because they haven’t reached the same success. Those with humility will appreciate the gratitude, but will also share in the success. Those who have succeeded will rejoice with others and thank them for their help in assisting the successful person of making their goals happen. It always takes more than one person to reach your goals, no matter how independent you are.

10. Calling it quits

When success has been reached, successful people don’t just stop trying. They don’t say, I have made it and have nothing more to do! No, they take the day for what it is, and then wake up anew with a fresh goal in mind. They don’t stop, they don’t pass by new opportunities. They know the keys to success and how to reach those steps and goals. With a path and goal in mind, and a determination in your heart and mind, you can be as successful as you want to be!

A summary of things you should know about The Happiness of Pursuit according to Chris Guillebeau:

Introduction

In this episode Chris Guillebeau takes a deep dive into his book, The Happiness of Pursuit where he reveals how anyone can bring meaning into their life by undertaking a quest.

In his book, Guillebeau shares his journey around the world where he found ordinary people doing extraordinary things and reveals their secret motivations. The goal of the book is to challenge you to take control of your life and help you find what it is that makes your life count.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who not only want to make money doing things that they love, but want to make an ever-lasting difference throughout their lives.

Special note: In celebration of the 100th episode of The Entrepreneurs Library we are giving away free books. Lots of them! Listen for the special announcement inside the episode for more details.

The Book’s Unique Quality (5:35)

It’s not primarily an “entrepreneurial” book. It’s something that’s much more about creating meaning and purpose in our lives. This book is much more about the meaning behind why I started a business and part of the reason was because I value freedom. I valued that freedom because it allowed me to do other things.

The Best Way To Engage (7:04)

It’s probably easier to start at the beginning and read all the way through.

The Reader’s Takeaway (17:20)

There is something greater out there and a calling for all of us and the more we take steps toward it, the easier it becomes. Don’t stop or ignore that calling.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (8:02)

In the beginning of the book I started with a story of me going to Guinea-Bissau in West Africa. After many obstacles and difficulty of getting there I begin to really ask myself why I am going through the trouble. It was then that I reminded myself that I am honoring this quest that I have chosen to go on and decided to finish it. I realized along the way that the greatest thing that came out of this adventure had nothing to do with be but rather from all the great people I met throughout the journey.

I begin talking about others who took on a quest and share their success stories. I talk about this guy who took on the four year MIT Computer Science Curriculum which is supposed to be one of the most difficult computer science curriculum and he did it in one year. I talk about why he did that and what he learned through that process. I also talk about a guy who walked across America and a guy who produced the world’s largest symphony. Throughout the book there are 50 stories that try to draw the reader in.

I organize the book around three sections. The first section is Beginnings. This section talks a little bit about my journey and about how people come to a quest. Each quest should involve challenge, difficulty and a possibility of failure. I talk about how a lot of people are discontented and that’s how they come to their quest.

The second section of the book is called Journey. In this section there are a lot more stories and it looks at the values that these people have. I not only tell the stories but also what we can learn from it and how we can apply it to our own lives. I tried to focus on what I call everyday adventure and showing how people can cultivate the value of adventure in their own lives even if they aren’t ready to do it just yet. I talk about how people do these quests, how much money it cost and how much time it takes. I try to help people strategically craft a quest for their life no matter who they are or what their situation is.

The last section is called destination and that is about arrivals. I talk about when I came to the end of my quest and what exactly that was like. Often that moment can be bitter sweet so I show the ready how to process that and give advice on what to do next.

In all three sections I am essentially trying to give the reader tools for how they apply this in their own life and their own pursuit. My goal in writing this book is for the reader to walk away and take action. I want inspiration combined with action.

Notable Quotes From The Book (19:12)

“It’s better to be at the bottom of a ladder you want to climb than the top of one you don’t.” – Steven Kellogg

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (2:11)

I am a writer, traveler and entrepreneur. I have spent the past 10 and ½ years on a personal quest to visit every country in the world. I also wrote a few other books which are The $100 Startup and The Art of Non-Conformity.

This was probably my most personal book yet. It took me a little bit longer to write than the other two. I came to this 10 and ½ year journey and as you might imagine that was such an incredible experience for me personally. And so when it came time to write about it I didn’t want to just write a travel memoir but I wanted to look at something deeper. The model that we used for The $100 Startup was essentially a case study model of looking at all kinds of people who have started a business without going in to debt and without going to business school. I really liked that model because we pulled out all these different examples and showed how people had done it very specifically. I use this same model for The Happiness of Pursuit, and I look at all kinds of people who have taken a quest and try to understand why they did it and learn about their obstacles along the way. The goal was not just to provide a bunch of stories the goal was to present this agenda to the reader. Ultimately the focus of the book is on the reader and why a venture can be a good value for our lives.

A summary of things you should know about Powerhouse according to Mike Clayton:

Introduction

In this episode Mike Clayton takes a deep dive into his book, Powerhouse, where he presents proven ways to boost overall effectiveness and start making an impact immediately.

In his book, Clayton shows you how to raise your personal effectiveness to dynamic levels, make solid decisions, stand up for your decisions, and gain tremendous support from others. The goal of the book is to help you be able to meet any challenge you cross while boosting your performance and making the right choices.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs that are not performing at the highest levels or are not brightening the outlook of everyone around and need a roadmap to craft a solution.

The Book’s Unique Quality (2:48)

It goes beyond productivity to effectiveness and not just doing lots but making the right choices and carrying those choices through. Even beyond personal effectiveness I wanted to create a book which helps the reader to understand how to create contagious attitudes that will motivate the people around them so they too can be more effective and productive.

The Best Way To Engage (3:39)

For the first time reader the reader will get a lot more from reading it from beginning to end. But if you don’t have time you can skim through and pick where you need to start.

The Reader’s Takeaway (14:25)

There are two core ideas in there. The idea of the compelling cause, that to be a powerhouse you have to know exactly what you are focusing on and why. And then the idea of a powerhouse loop, the idea that if you follow that compelling cause blindly and you get tunnel vision, you run the risk of missing an even better opportunity. You must identify and analyze what’s going on to find your compelling causes, plan how you are going to do it and take action.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (4:32)

The book is divided in to 10 chapters and the first 9 follow a sequence. Each of the chapters has a theme hooked around a personal attribute that is going to bring effectiveness and real power to your work.

The first chapter is about self-control and the theme is really about doing the right thing. This chapter carries a lot of burden of the ideas of the book because it sets out the idea of a compelling cause and the idea that there are lots of things that you could be doing but what will make you successful is not scattering efforts across many ideas but making a real choice. I also introduce the idea of the powerhouse loop which is a cycle of identifying the opportunities, analyzing what those opportunities are and then making your choice of compelling causes to pursue. We then make time to plan on how we are going to deliver on those compelling causes and then take action. I think real effectiveness is about gauging your process at each stage and having taken action, getting a measure of the progress and identify what’s next.

The second chapter focuses on the idea of judgment and it asks the question why you are doing what you are choosing to do and it suggests that we need to do the right things for the right reasons. I give the reader some understanding of what I consider to be a good quality decision and the need for good proof for strong process. I also suggest that a good decision is not enough unless you are able to carry people with you.

Chapter three suggests that you have to do the right things right and this chapter really focuses on productivity. I divide it in to four stages which are planning, preparation, performance and my idea of post-paration. We prepare in advance, we post-pare after we have done something. I think a lot of work gets wasted when we do the bulk of the work and then we walk away and get caught up with something else.

Chapter four focuses on relationships to be successful in the world of work and creating a new business you have to work with the people around you. I talk about strategic networking and tactical networking in this chapter to give the reader ideas about to plan and manage a campaign of engaging stakeholders and building support for whatever it is that they are seeking to do.

Chapter five is also around people but now we are starting to take a leadership role and this chapter is about how to get the best from the people around you. In this chapter I talk about how to motivate your team, how to actively manage your team, and I introduce some of the ideas from a positive organization of psychology around evaluating, excellence and celebrating success. There is a pivotal diagram in this chapter that shows the difference between moving from under performance to standard performance.

My personal favorite chapter is chapter six. The idea behind this chapter is conduct and the need to get the best from yourself. What I like best about this chapter is it opens with an analysis of the different ways that we think and the ways our brains work. I also introduce the reader to other modes of thinking which they can use to round out their performance. The final step in this chapter is to articulate what I think are five important powerhouse attitudes.

Chapter seven is about perception and the need to be prepared for the unexpected. I talk primarily about two things. One is reading the future and how to be alert for what’s coming down the line. And secondly I talk about how to read people and suggest there are five critical questions we can ask if we want to understand the people around us and anticipate their actions.

Chapter eight recognizes something I have found very important when I was managing projects and starting new businesses. And that is the need to be resilient and handle the unexpected and also to cope personally with the challenges that the unexpected throws at us. This chapter gives a range of different tools such as different modes of working when things go wrong and understanding how we ought to respond the stress and overcome the feeling of being overwhelmed.

Chapter nine is about growth, knowing when and where to stop, and how to harvest the lessons that you may have learned from delivering on your compelling causes.

Chapter ten sets out seven principals for taking your personal effectiveness ideas from powerhouse and extending them to an organizational level. I articulate seven principles that an organization can apply to start to create systemic powerhouse performance in its people.

Notable Quotes From The Book (16:47)

“The world is full of opportunities, start by focusing on the right ones.” – Mike Clayton

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:36)

I am a business author and speaker. My background is as a consultant with Deloitte consulting when I was delivering projects and program management services for my clients. For the last 12 years or so I’ve spent my time delivering seminars and training all around the UK and some of Europe as well. And over the last six years I have developed a writing career and Powerhouse is my 13th printed book.

Some of the ideas have been buzzing around since a much earlier book called Smart to Wise. These are the more practical aspects of wisdom that I wanted to get across of how to get things done. The sources of these ideas come from my experience as a project manager, my fascination with personal psychology, and my interest in positive organization scholarship.

A summary of things you should know about The Greatness Zone according to Jay Forte:

Introduction

In this episode Jay Forte takes a deep dive into his book, The Greatness Zone where he helps you know what you are good at, what you love and what is going on in your world.

In his book, Forte introduces this life-changing thinking in his compelling and heartwarming story of two kids in college. By following the stories of Mary and Mike, you will get to see the greatness formula in action which will guide you through the process of knowing yourself and finding your best fit in life.

This book is perfect for an entrepreneur who is bored with life, often listens to what others have to say, and does not know how to change things.

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:00)

An entrepreneur is somebody who is always watching for opportunities. I realized that the shift in the economy created a serendipitous moment for someone to guide other people in learning how to discover your core abilities and then connect them to the world. In The Greatness Zone we created it in story form so that not only would you learn how to do it but you’d see somebody in the book do it.

The Best Way To Engage (3:43)

My recommendation is to start at the beginning and read through to the end.

The Reader’s Takeaway (12:00)

The most significant concept is in order to succeed in today’s world the biggest thing we can do is learn to see things differently. And the way to see things differently is to realize that you have a unique advantage point. The moment you start to give it language about what it is and how you see things then you enter into a world that opens up to a huge amount of opportunity because you rule things in instead of rule them out. The clarity about you creates the ability for you to make great choices, to show up very confident and then to live courageously in the way you build ideas.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (4:36)

The story starts between two kids who meet in college who are in a freshman philosophy course. One kid has it totally together because her parents have given her the five rules for a really great life which turns in to the backbone of the book. She then explains this concept in a Venn diagram to a kid who sits next to her who has no idea why he is in college or what it is that he is supposed to study. These 5 rules show up on a Venn diagram that shows you that in order to know yourself you should know your abilities, your passions and your values. Mary has learned these rules because her family was determined that for them to be successful they should be totally present to who they are in their world. If you could know them and know their world they could always be able to connect the two and find a way to fit.

Mary introduces to Mike to the way that her parents showed her to figure out what she’s good at, what she loves and how to look at the world in a very different way. The idea is that if you know you and the world you will always be aware and capable of looking through the world for the things connect best to your unique vantage point.

As Mary shows Mike how to do it, Mike starts to do it himself. So as the reader sees Mike do it, the reader then starts to do it. You start to realize the things you are good at and what you’re passionate about and the things that matter to you. As you see that the real you develops and from that place you start to see and respect the fact that your view of the world is different than others.
Know yourself, find your fit and transform the world.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 04:36

Notable Quotes From The Book (13:08)

“To stand out you must be exceptional and not at everything because no one is exceptional at everything but everyone is exceptional at some things so identify those things.” – Jay Forte

“Most people play small because they don’t know they have the capacity to play great. What they miss is the self-awareness to know what their particular greatness is.” – Jay Forte

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:38)

I am a certified life and workplace CEO coach, an author and a speaker. Prior to that I was a CPA and CFO for years and then realized that most of my career I was in the wrong place. I’m a big idea person that just needed an environment to keep inventing. Now I work around the workplace and around helping people discover what the big ideas in life are for them.

The Greatness Zone happened as a direct effect of the first book that I had written called Fire up your employees and smoke your competition. It came out of my time as an education director just at the time the economy was shifting out of an industrial agent to an intellectual age. It came out as a process book to say regardless of your age you should know what you are good at, what you love and what is going on in your world. So that you can know you, know your world and put the two together.
