A summary of things you should know about Fueled By Failure according to Jeremy Bloom:

Introduction

In this episode, business expert and Olympian, Jeremy Bloom gives an in-depth preview of his book, Fueled By Failure, where he coaches you on turning failure into success.

In his book Bloom provides actionable advice on overcoming failure through the personal lessons he has learned from well-respected coaches, athletes, and business leaders that have brought him to the top. The goal of the book is to help you push yourself through hard times, learn how to rebound after being defeated, create an amazing business culture, and uncover motivation you never knew existed.

This book is perfect for aspiring entrepreneurs who have a desire to change the world, but lack the coaching and motivation of fighting through the difficulties of overcoming life’s challenges.

The Book’s Unique Quality (6:07)

I believe that my perspective is a little more different and unique because of the people I have had the privilege of sharing life with and the experiences I have gone through.

The Best Way To Engage (7:31)

One of my pet peeves is redundancy and so I wanted to write a book that was really concise and didn’t repeat things I was saying over and over again. You can pick up this book and literally read it in one afternoon.

The Reader’s Takeaway (17:21)

It would be to suppress your ego. I believe that our egos can get in the way of so many different things in our lives. Think about the decisions that you make in your life and how much ego is attached to them. If you think that your ego potentially has a larger control on your life than you’d like there are a lot of things that you can do to suppress that.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (8:36)

I’ll cover a few chapters and start with chapter one which is my most favorite.

My biggest dream in athletics was to win an Olympic gold medal. My dad is an Olympic historian and growing up he would often times get emotional during opening ceremonies and when US athletes would win medals. He was one of my biggest heroes in life, my mentor and coach, and I really wanted to win a gold medal not only for myself but also for him. I won three world championships, I won more world cups than anybody in history in a single season, and I was ranked number one in the world coming into the Olympics but I had 23 seconds to make a 22 year old dream come true and my one small mistake cost me that chance. In the book I talk about what a dark place that put me in and talk about what I call the 48 hour rule principle that got me through it. I think the most important thing to do in times of failure is to prescriptively with ourselves set a deadline for how long we are going to allow ourselves to revisit the failure. When I woke up the next morning after losing that 22 year old dream I gave myself 48 hours to be inside my head, try and dissect what happened, and to take the lessons out of that experience and move on. After the 48 hours I committed to moving on and about three days later I went to the NFL combine and competed well there and got drafted into the NFL. This is a concept that I use today in business and continue to use in athletics.

Another one of my favorite chapters in the book and something I believe strongly in is this idea of starting with culture. Before you have a business I think it’s incredibly important to define what your culture is. This should become a roadmap for you and your employees to look at to know exactly what needs to be done to become the best employee and/or leader. At Integrate, the company I run, we have five cultural pillars. The first pillar is performance and we define that as the most importance key metric is increasing the overall value of the business and everybody buys into that. When you set performance first in the culture it creates a different tone. The second pillar is being entrepreneurial. The third pillar is personal responsibility and we define that as you lead with conviction but accept when your ideas aren’t implemented with grace. The fourth pillar is creativity and we define that as you are a curator of originality. The last and the nonnegotiable pillar is humility and we define that as being quick to give credit for results and slow to take it.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 08:36

Notable Quotes From The Book (21:36)

“Don’t let the good days go to your head or the bad days go to your heart.” – Jeremy Bloom

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:04)

I grew up in Loveland Colorado most of my life. I first saw the Olympics on TV when I was 10 years old and was struck by how incredible they were. I had been a skier since I was three years old and after seeing the Olympics is when I realized I could do something with that talent. I was also a football player and I told my parents at age 10 that I wanted to ski in the Olympics and I wanted to play in the NFL. They both looked at me and told me that I could do that if I really put my mind to it and attack my dreams. Through a lot of good luck and fortune I was able to live out both of those dreams. I competed in two Olympics for the United States in freestyle skiing and then went on to get drafted in the fifth round by the Philadelphia Eagles which I spent two seasons there. I was with the Pittsburgh Steelers before launching into my nonprofit and now running a venture back startup.

My inspiration for writing this book came from my own personal experiences and also the observation of others. I grew up with some incredibly talented athletes and now I’m exposed to some wonderfully talented entrepreneurs and it’s been my observation in life that the inevitable setbacks that everybody encounters along their journey handles those moments a little bit differently. Along our journey we develop an ego and one of the things that an ego can do to be destructive to our dreams is over personalize the setbacks in our lives. I wanted to dive into this topic, talk to some of the most successful people, and share my journey in hopes of helping someone else accomplish their dreams.

A summary of things you should know about Earning Freedom according to Michael Santos:

Introduction

In this episode Michael Santos takes a deep dive into his book, Earning Freedom, where he shares his incredible journey from a 25 year prison inmate to super successful business man.

In his book Santos discusses the day he was arrested to the day he left prison and highlights the lessons he learned along the way that allowed him to build his bank account to $100,000 behind bars. The goal of the book is to help you build yourself upon the influences Michael Santos embarked upon, find your inner motivation to start increasing your value, and learn how to use your resources effectively.

This book is perfect for aspiring entrepreneurs who have a desire to become very successful in a niche but lack the motivation or inspiration to start making moves towards a goal.

The Book’s Unique Quality (4:49)

The difference is it’s the very personal nature. This is truly a memoir in the sense that I am expressing and helping the reader see what was going through my mind when I was in my early twenties and facing this monstrous sentence. What’s different about this book is that it shows how I was able to sustain a high level of energy and discipline as those days turned into weeks, those weeks turned into months, the months turned into years, and the years turned into decades.

The Best Way To Engage (6:22)

This is a personal memoir that is divided into three sections the first being I Came, second is I Saw, and lastly I conquered. The book would not make sense if the reader jumped around so I suggest reading it straight through.

The Reader’s Takeaway (14:12)

It’s that hope is what unites us all as human beings. It’s that as long as we have hope of something better we can make it through anything.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (9:01)

In the beginning of the book I define what it was that made it different for me. The first thing I had to do is define my values and if I don’t define that then the world is going to define me by the bad decisions I made when I was 20. For me those value categories began with making a commitment to education because I was projecting myself into the future of connecting with law-abiding leaders. These leaders became my avatar and role models and would expect me to educate myself.

Second these leaders would expect me to contribute to society because if I was contributing to society I would demonstrate that I don’t want to be a criminal but rather a good citizen.

And thirdly these leaders would expect me to build a support network because if I could get strong leaders to believe in me it might be easier for them to believe in me. Once I had my values it was about setting these clear goals that would define what it meant to educate myself, contribute to society, and to build a support network. To me educating myself meant I needed to get a degree. Contributing to society was to live a life of meaning and the reader will see that and be able to transfer those concepts to his or her own life. And building a support network was about finding 10 people that I didn’t know and who don’t know who I am and persuade them to believe in me.

The end result that the reader will get out of the book is that regardless of what challenges you face in life, there is always a path through. And that path begins by professing the values which you choose to live.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 09:01

Notable Quotes From The Book (15:23)

“Be the change you want to see in the world.” – Gandhi

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:14)

I made some really bad decisions as a young man when I was 22 years old. I saw the movie Scar Face and thought that that would be a fun way to live. I moved to Miami began trafficking and using cocaine and for the next eighteen months I was living that very fast and reckless life. I was arrested on August 11, 1987 when I was 23 years old and I proceeded to spend the next 9,500 days in federal prison which is a total of 26 years and one day. While I was incarcerated I spend every day working to reconcile with society, to build a support network, and to come back as a law-abiding contributing citizen. I have now been back in society for about 18 months and currently working really hard to inspire other people in showing them that we are all on a journey and we should look at the challenges that come our way and figure out strategies to overcome them.

The story is about going through a 45 year prison sentence but the inspiration is that we all as human beings face struggle and challenges. The context of my story may be about prison and overcoming it but the reality is that I’ve met many people in society who live in a much bigger prison than I ever did. I felt that if I could just share the strategies that empowered me through the time I served in prison people would be able to see those same strategies to could help them in their personal struggles. All of these strategies are none that I’ve created, they are strategies that I’ve learn from leaders and masterminds and I wanted to share those lessons with other people through the context of my own journey.

A summary of things you should know about The Self-Made Billionaire Effect according to John Sviokla:

Introduction

In this episode John Sviokla gives an in-depth summary of his and Mitch Cohens’ book, The Self-Made Billionaire Effect, where they discuss how extreme producers create massive value.

In their book Sviokla and Cohen provide extensive research drawn from interviews with some of the most successful billionaires in order to debunk the perceptions people have of high producing entrepreneurs. The goal of the book is to teach you habits designed to improve your business value, how to start thinking like a billionaire, and how to be highly valuable to your employees.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs that set very high expectations when it comes to business goals and are looking for solid ways to provide massive value when it comes to building a business.

The Book’s Unique Quality (2:00)

This book is the first ever systematic study of a self-made billionaire.

The Best Way To Engage (2:47)

It’s really a book you can jump in and jump out of. The introduction of the book tells you that these people are not who you think they are. 80% of them made their money in highly competitive contested markets.

The Reader’s Takeaway (10:11)

The one thing I would say is to follow your curiosity about an opportunity area and don’t separate thinking from doing. If you want to pursue it, pursue it yourself.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (3:51)

The core notion that the book talks about is underneath every billion dollar opportunity what you will see is what we call a Producer or a Producer Performer Pair.

A Producer is the kind of person that knows how to design a business from scratch and to get all those design variables and land them well. That’s true whether these people are doing it in pizza, coffee, or high-tech.

As I mentioned before these people are not who you think, they come from all walks of life. Then we look at what makes these billionaires distinctive and what we found were these Five Habits of Mind.

The Five Habits of Mind are inventive execution, epithetic imagination, a relative view of risk, patient urgency, and producer performer pairing. For example epithetic imagination is a combination of understanding where markets going as well as a rational understanding of what the economic opportunity might be.

Throughout the book I give you a deep definition of each of the Five Habits of Mind and pair them with stories to help the reader get a visual of how each one works.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 03:51

Notable Quotes From The Book (10:55)

“The universe is a fight between habit and novelty and novelty is winning.” Terence McKenna

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:27)

I am a partner in the PwC consulting division and I hit up our Thought Leadership. I have been there for about four years and about a dozen years before that I was a consultant at a company called Diamond. And for a dozen years before that I was a professor at Harvard Business School in the area of technology strategy in innovation.

The inspiration was I was talking to my co-author Mitch Cohen and PwC is really about helping our clients create value and I told Mitch that we should study the people who created the most value on the planet. We took the self-made billionaires and made a book of all the things people could learn from their success.

A summary of things you should know about The Top Ten Mistakes Leaders Make according to Hans Finzel:

Introduction

In this episode Hans Finzel takes a deep dive into his book, The Top Ten Mistakes Leaders Make, where he shares the common mistakes leaders need to overcome.

In his book Finzel provides newly updated stories and strategies from very successful leaders who have once made continuous mistakes when it comes to effectively leading others. The goal of the book is to teach you what effective leadership looks like, how to overcome typical bad habits that come with being a leader, and how to take your leadership skills to the next level.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who are emerging leaders and wish to prevent or improve upon common bad habits that many leaders continue to struggle with.

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:50)

I think one of the biggest differences is that I have done leadership for 30 years and so I write from experience. This book is very practical, simple, and useable.

The Best Way To Engage (4:39)

You can easily jump in and jump out. Each of the ten chapters are standalone ideas.

The Reader’s Takeaway (14:19)

The one principle action item that I would want the reader to take away is to learn to be a servant leader, not a top down leader. A servant leader puts the good of the team in front of their own selfish desires.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (5:20)

Firstly, I want the reader to know that I have personally made all 10 of these mistakes and learned from them all. I chose these top 10 because as I went on my journey as a CEO of a 35 million dollar international nonprofit and I began to conclude that these were the top 10 of all the mistakes that I see leaders make.

Of all the leadership sins the number one mistake leaders make is the top down attitude. Most think that they are on top because they are the smartest, they founded the company, and they know best. This is the worst mistake a leader can make and I talk to people all the time that work under these leaders and they get very, very frustrated.

The second mistake is putting paperwork before people work. 90% of effectiveness in leadership is people skills, the software of working well with people. But the higher you go into leadership there is more paperwork and technology that stands in the way of giving yourself to people.

The third mistake is the absence of affirmation. What could be better than a pay raise? It’s been proven that people praise affirmation and sometimes this is a blind spot for leaders. People desperately need affirmation and it’s a huge piece of leadership.

The fourth mistake is that there is no room for mavericks. A leader makes a mistake if they don’t allow mavericks to thrive and a maverick is just an entrepreneur that doesn’t follow rules. This chapter will show you how to cultivate people who think outside the box.

Chapter five covers dictatorship and decision making, Getting Beyond I Know All the Answers. This whole idea of being a dictator in decision making frustrates people so much because they want to have a part in the big decisions of the company.

Chapter six is what I call Dirty Delegation, Refusing to Relax and Let Go. When I ask an audience what is it the most that frustrates them about their boss, I get this response all the time. In this chapter I go into all the reasons why really gifted and high power leaders don’t delegate well.

Chapter seven is Communication Chaos and this is just about clear lines and clarity in the organization.

Chapter eight covers missing the clues of corporate culture and a leader has to understand this if they are going to lead through it.

Chapter nine is Success without a Successor, Planning Your Departure the Day You Start. One of the final acts of great leadership is to cultivate the people who will replace you. I don’t think you should see that at a threat but a really great leader can go on vacation because they have trained other people to step in. If you can never go on vacation because the place will fall apart without you, you’re not cultivating successors.
Finally, Chapter 10 is Failure to Focus on The Future. We have to be listeners and learners because the future where we are going to sell our business is so very different from the past or the present.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 05:20

Notable Quotes From The Book (15:58)

“The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men and women to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.” –Theodore Roosevelt

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:54)

I was born and raised in Huntsville Alabama. My father was a rocket scientist and a part of NASA. I have spent my career mostly in the nonprofit world and became more and more interested in leadership after 20 years as a CEO of one of the nonprofits. I eventually left to start my own work fulltime helping leaders and managers do a better job. My passion is to really help leaders take their leadership to the next level. Today I do a lot of podcasting on leadership and I keep turning out books because I love to write about leadership. Lastly, I am a father of four kids and married to a wonderful wife.

The inspiration came after working under a bad leader. I worked for a guy that just totally frustrated me and stood in the way of my visions and dreams for what I wanted to do. He crushed my spirit to the point where I lost respect and finally left. When I became a leader I wanted to study how to be a good leader, not a bad leader and how to empower people instead of frustrating people.

A summary of things you should know about Vibrational Money Immersion according to Ray Higdon:

Introduction

In this episode Ray Higdon takes a deep dive into his book, Vibrational Money Immersion, where shares a network marketing guide to better help you make a living from home.

In his book Higdon provides a roadmap filled with practical advice, assignments, and principles that are designed to show you how to become the best network marketer in the field of multi-level marketing. The goal of this book is the help you train your brain to craft your own success, master the art of networking, enhance your sales skills, and overcome multiple obstacles that get in the way.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who want to be able to work from home and are interested in multi-level marketing, but want a better understanding of the principles.

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:24)

Some of the different things about my book are that I am not speaking from theory. I’m speaking exactly how I went from dead broke personal foreclosure to earning over a million dollars, becoming the number one income earner, and having over 85% of an entire network marketing company in my team.

The Best Way To Engage (4:35)

Originally this was a weekly audio course with seventeen chapters. My suggestion would be to go through the book once quickly and then look back to see which one of the chapters jumped out at you and go back through those particular chapters in more detail.

The Reader’s Takeaway (8:54)

Stop looking at what you think you know and look at your results. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard someone tell me, oh I’ve heard that before, but they are dead broke. If you do not have the results in your life that you wish you had then this book can help you understand why you are where you are at and how to get to that next level.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (6:11)

This book is all about mindset. It’s based on the original book of Think and Grow Rich but added with original stories on exactly how and why you have the type of results in your life that you do. So if you’ve been wondering why you’ve been working really, really hard but don’t have a whole lot of results to show for it, this book reveals that. This book will tell you exactly, in so many different scenarios, how your thinking is dictating your results.

I dive deep and talk about my divorce, my child abuse as a kid. I talk about how I got into foreclosure and what exactly got me there but also what exactly got me out of it. And so this is a guide to improving your mindset. Yes, it’s targeted for network marketers but I’ve had people in real estate, insurance, and car sales, go through it and tell me that it really helped them out because mindset is the major factor in anything you do.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 06:11

Notable Quotes From The Book (10:30)

“The ability to say woe is me shows the abundance of inactivity.” – Ray Higdon

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:48)

I was in corporate America and I didn’t feel like I was living my highest and best purpose and also spending more time with picture of my kids than the real thing. I would go to work when they were asleep and come home to them already in bed and that just wasn’t the life that I wanted to work toward. And so I went out on my own and started a real estate business that didn’t work out and in 2009 I found myself dead broke. It was then when I reinvented myself and have since built a multimillion a year coaching and training business. I also have a very successful blog and social media presence and because of all this my lifestyle is a lot different.

A lot of entrepreneurs attribute some of their successes from the content that’s contained within Think and Grow Rich. What I did was I took the public domain version of Think and Grow Rich and I kind of translated it not just to today’s world but also for the actual network marketer. I’ve been in network marketing for over five years and there are a lot of people that appreciate that translation of how this actually and directly applies to their profession.

A summary of things you should know about The Outside Edge according to Robert Kelsey:

Introduction

In this episode Robert Kelsey gives an in-depth look inside his book, The Outside Edge, where he discusses how outsiders can succeed in a world made by insiders.

In his book Kelsey provides a practical guide that explains the ins and outs of getting your voice heard when it comes to being an original thinker and helps remediate the insecurities of unappreciated creativity. The goal of the book is to help you accept yourself for who you are, motivate yourself to harness your creativity, and acquire the skills needed to get your ideas heard.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who possess a unique ability to create new ideas and need help overcoming the feelings of awkwardness when it comes to finding work.

The Book’s Unique Quality (7:47)

I think because of my personal experience of being an outsider myself I come at it in a very different way and write based on that.

The Best Way To Engage (10:50)

I write my books to be read from beginning to end and because of that it has a very strong structure to it that will act as a good reference guide.

The Reader’s Takeaway (13:05)

The one word that it all comes down to in the end is the word insight. I want an outsider to understand who they are and the reason why they think like they do. Lastly, I want the outsider to accept who they are so that it stops being disabling for them.

Notable Quotes From The Book (17:48)

“Focus on the second reaction and if you do that you’ll find that everything lines up in a much more constructive way.” – Robert Kelsey

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:57)

I am British and lived most of my life in London. I am someone that has always considered myself an outsider and didn’t fit my environment and ended up becoming an entrepreneur. What I’ve realized since then is that most entrepreneurs feel the same way I did and that’s often the reason they became an entrepreneur.

I realized that I had a mental disconnect from other people and it turned me into someone that felt like an outsider and I felt like it was important to write about. The real catalyst for me was reading Malcolm Gladwell’s book, David and Goliath, where he spent 200 or more pages saying that outsiders and misfits had an enormous advantage. I couldn’t believe what I was reading because I always felt outsiders were disabled from their mental blockages and sometimes they don’t even see it. What Gladwell was describing to me were not outsiders that had an advantage, they were eccentric insiders and they were using their advantages that they had inbuilt in them in order to succeed. My book at first looks like its accepting Gladwell’s premise but it’s not, it’s absolutely rejecting it. Ultimately I make the point that outsiders do have some attributes that they can employ to their advantages but they’ve got to learn to employ them.

A summary of things you should know about Business Dating according to Honoree Corder:

Introduction

In this episode Honoree Corder takes a deep dive into her book, Business Dating where she discusses how to apply relationship rules to business and master the art of business networking.

In her book Corder provides a roadmap where she personally coaches you on the best, practical ways to build business to business relationships using her special 12 x 12 matrix. The goal of the book is to help you not only become a master at networking but also overcome the fear of meeting people, know when networking opportunities are greatest, and fully leverage the relationships you build.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who frequent networking events and have a hard time creating professional relationships that yield a solid return on investment.

The Best Way To Engage (3:41)

I wrote it to be read from front to back. I build one thing upon the next.

The Reader’s Takeaway (16:26)

I think everyone’s favorite so far is the 12×12. Putting together your 12×12 matrix and having a visual of all of your business relationships and knowing who you have and who you are missing.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (4:24)

Chapter one is business dating and what in the world it’s all about. I talk about the correlation between person dating and business dating. Personal dating is when two people spend time together to try and determine what, if anything, they have in common and whether they should spend more time together. Business dating, networking, is exactly the same thing but a lot of people think that once you meet someone it’s an automatic open door to their American Express card. And so I talk about why that isn’t the case in this first chapter. I talk about how you do it right according to me and then I get people to think about why they are networking and business dating. I do this by having them take a step back and think about why they are in business, how long they’ll be there, and who they need to know in order to make the rest of their business career. I also talk about ineffective business dating and what I see people doing wrong.

Chapter three is the art of business dating and I talk about something called The Trust Bridge. When you are developing a relationship with someone you are on this side of a bridge. On one side of it is that I don’t know you and I don’t like you and I trust you. On the other side of the bridge is everything you could ever want from a relationship. In this chapter I am talking about the relationship stages. Stage one is nice to meet you, stage two is I’m getting to know you, stage three is I think I like you, stage four is the getting to trust, stage five is I trust you, then I have a bonus stage which you’ll find out about in the book.

In chapter four I go really deep into the do’s and the don’ts of business dating and the two components of what to do and what not to do. It’s very simple and I break them all down. Once you know what not to do and what to do, we then get into how to make a strong connection with someone. I literally give the language for if you want to make an introduction between two people, you want to reach out to someone you don’t know and do it in such a way that you have success every single time.

Chapter five is called The Structure Sets You Free and in chapter five I reveal the 12×12 which is a visual matrix of your network. This helps you identify who is in your network and needs to be in your network and then I actually break down how to find those people and connect with them. I break that whole system down and provide free downloads on my website because I think the more people I can help, the better. Step one is identify, step two is organize, step three is discover, and step four is connect.

Chapter six is getting to know you, getting to know all about you, and I think I like you. I describe what I think many people have gone through many times when they’ve had that person come at them and really want something from them and they just aren’t ready to give that up. I talk a little more about the trust bridge in this chapter and I also talk about how to nurture relationships with the people that you are in relationship with.

Chapter seven is called What’s Your Number and I think that every person has a number of time that they need to interactive with or hear from someone before there is trust. What’s interesting is nobody knows your number, not even you.

Chapter eight is know + Like + Trust = $$. You will not get to the revenue part of the relationship until you’ve crossed the trust bridge and got all the way to the other side. I give the qualifiers for how to know when to stay in touch with someone. Then I’m talking about keeping the love alive which is more follow up but this time I’m going into direct follow up and passive follow up.

Chapter nine is To Know you is to Love, Hire, and Refer you. So this is about your reputation, your code of conduct, your code of ethics, being friendly and I talk about the cornerstones of healthy relationships.

Finally, in chapter ten, I wrap it up with Business Dating for Ultimate Success. I get people setup for the journey ahead and remind them to keep the smile on their face and to get busy developing business dating relationships.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 04:24

Notable Quotes From The Book (17:35)

“You’ve read all the way through, now you know what to do, so go on your way, go and prosper I say.” – Honoree Corder

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (1:02)

I am an executive coach, speaker, and author. I work with professionals to help them double their income and triple their time off.

It’s not what the inspiration was; it’s more who the inspiration was. My clients were the inspiration. It’s a networking book and my take on how you can develop relationships in business using correlations between person dating and business dating.

A summary of things you should know about Nice Guys Finish First according to Doug Sandler:

Introduction

In this episode Doug Sandler gives a full preview of his book, Nice Guys Finish First, where he discusses how a great experience can make someone a customer for life.

In his book Sandler shares a very original consultative approach to putting the “human” back into client relationships in order to build trust that results in exceptional customer service. The goal of the book is to show you how to advise customers on making good decisions, build a longer lasting relationship with them, and develop a stronger sense of personal character.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who are having a hard time keeping customers and need a practical way to overcome the challenge of taking their business from good to extraordinary.

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:38)

I wanted to make a simple book and an easy read. There is no magic bullet in business today but there is a system that I’ve put in place that is so simple.

The Best Way To Engage (5:06)

You can pick this book up and read it from any chapter. Half of the book is based on systems and the other half is based on the behavioral approach you can take.

The Reader’s Takeaway (16:00)

That’s any easy one for me because the title of the book, Nice Guys Finish First, is really what it’s all about. The one concept that I would like the reader to walk away with is that nice guys finish first.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (5:49)

The book came together as a result of trying to figure out what I would like to read and what I thought entrepreneurs would like to read in trying to advance their business forward to the next level.

I start with a little bit of a background on me. The book is called Nice Guys Finish First because the philosophy behind this entire system is that you can be nice in business today and still be very successful. Being nice is giving back just as much as you are taking.

I talk about technology because in today’s technology age we really have a tough time with those sixteen digit numbers that we’ve all become to the company’s that we work with. I talk about how to use technology to your advantage as opposed to using technology as a tool to hide behind the issues that you may be having with your business.

Then I start to get into what it means to put the customer first in your business and how we can create an attitude that represents that.

As you get into three or four chapters of the book we start to get into the systems. We talk about the system of investing energy in your resources, investing your time in your client, inspiring your client to take action and come up with a plan, and then execute. It’s really not just about executing a plan to bring your product to this customer or to create a great culture of customer service; it’s to execute your plan excellently.
As we start to get into the second half of the book we talk about how your customer needs to trust you and how you want to take a consultative approach to selling.

As we get into the last 3rd of the book I talk about empowering others and how important it is especially as a solo business owner. This includes delegating responsibilities and not being the ironfisted leader. I talk a little bit about leaders and how important it is to be a leader that leads by gratitude rather than a leader that does not show the way but tells the way.

In the last couple of chapters of the book we take a look at the positive environment that you have to create within your own head.
As I get to the final two chapters I talk about the importance of failure as a part of success. As we conclude the book I really get into the important areas that you need to focus on in your life. You need to focus on time management, money management, and relationship management. I wrap up the book talking about where to go from there.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 05:49

Notable Quotes From The Book (18:06)

“The shortest answer is doing the right thing.” – Unknown

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:59)

I spent 48 years running an entertainment business as a DJ. About two years ago I turned a switch and decided that I could teach people to do what I have done which is build a business.

A few years ago I made a call to a credit card company and I was asked to enter my sixteen digit number followed by the pound sign. As I went through this phone call I kept thinking that there has got to be a better way than this. I figured that there had to be a way that I could teach what I’ve done over the last 30 years to those that are just getting started now so that they can avoid the mistakes that I made.

Introduction

In this special episode of The Entrepreneurs Library serial entrepreneur and CEO of VoterSnap, Patrick Stevens, guest interviews Wade Danielson on his entrepreneurial journey and this show.

Since the launch of The Entrepreneurs Library, Wade has been asked so many questions that relates to his entrepreneurial life and the driving force behind his idea for this unique resource. The goal of this episode is to give you a more personal look into the life of Wade, the failures and successes along his journey, what led him to creating a book centric resource for entrepreneurs, and how his first company got listed #786 on Inc’s Fortune 5000.

AFTER YOU LISTEN/READ: Whether you are a subscriber to the show or a brand new listener it would be very humbling if you left your feedback about this show by commenting on this post.

A Summary of The Interview

Will you give those that don’t know you a bird’s eye view of yourself? (6:30)

WADE: I was born and raised in Nebraska, moved around the Midwest a ton due to my father working for the railroad. I ended up back in Nebraska for college and then met my future wife and decided to move back down to Texas where I currently reside. As of recently we now have two boys, two years and eleven months old.

A little background on where it all started was as a college kid I got in front of an awesome group of people, an education system that taught me the importance of reading which completely changed my life. I had big goals and dreams and it was the education I was looking for. That led me to starting my own company, Guardian Network Solutions, at the age of 25 which I still run today and about to have our five year anniversary. We found a niche for something that was missing in the network security industry and decided to fill it. Every day we focus on helping small business owners keep their network secure. Over the years we grew organically and started to add people little by little to join our team and help us reach our goals as a small business. Our fourth year in business we hit a little over four million in revenue and have huge plans for the next couple of years and in 2016 we are looking to be a 10 million dollar company.

If Mark Cuban or Donald Trump were to introduce you, what would they say? (11:50)

WADE: I would hope that they would talk about me being someone who is more of a time crusader, someone who is always looking to maximize the most out of life. I’m a big believer in focusing on putting more years onto your life and then putting more life into those years that you have. I am someone who knows that he’s never going to be perfect but is always in the pursuit of perfection.

What was one of the first main defining moments in your life and reasons that made you make a decision to become an entrepreneur? (13:45)

WADE: One of the big things for me was getting married. I realized I was ok as a single guy being fairly broke and living at a friend’s house on a half inflated air mattress. But when I really got serious about proposing to my wife, the thought of bringing someone else on, I knew I was never going to bring someone else to live like that. So getting married was a huge part of it and it was the first time that made me think at a level that I’d never thought before. Another thing that motivated me was one Christmas I had asked my boss for an unexpected day off in order to drive up to Nebraska to spend time with my family before a big storm hit. I knew that if I didn’t leave the day before expected I would never make it there. So I called my bosses and could easily tell that they both weren’t supportive of it at all. It was then that I realized I was not in control and I knew that entrepreneurs have more control of not only time but more money. Those were two extremely big moment in deciding to become an entrepreneur.

What was your mindset in taking the leap from working for a company fulltime to actually starting a company where you have all the responsibilities to think about? (18:30)

WADE: I am glad this question was asked because mindset is such a massive part of winning and losing in the entrepreneurial game. Your kids are an excuse not to start a business or your kids are the reason to start a business and that’s the way I thought about it. Even though I didn’t have kids at the time but I worked really, really hard for that future child. The thought process was it was a bigger risk for me to actually keep working a job than it was for me to be an entrepreneur who bought back his freedom because that time as an entrepreneur allows me to focus on my marriage rather than working 11 hours a day.

You’re coming up on your five year anniversary at GNS and knowing that around 90% of businesses don’t even make it to the five year mark, let alone be as successful as it is. So what from your perspective are the reasons why Guardian Network Solutions has been so successful and made it this far? (24:50)

WADE: My personal belief is that most people fail in business because they are so specialized in what they do but they don’t know the business side.

Being a podcaster and in this specific niche within personal development, what’s the primary content that you’re seeing most successful entrepreneurs are consuming right now? And how do you see that changing over the next five years? (27:42)

WADE: From what I’ve seen I think the predominant sources are still books, blogs, magazines, and audio books. I think you will eventually see a large shift to audio-on-demand.

When did you realize self-education was the way to real and lasting success for you? (31:30)

WADE: I think the first time I realized it was in college, 21 years old, and going to classes that weren’t very specific. I was learning business law and more interested in business and marketing. I was the person in college who said that I will never read again and believed that reading was so unbelievably boring. This was until I finally read a book that I was actually interested in which was Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. It was from that point forward that I became addicted to personal growth and that came through reading.

How did you come across podcasting? (37:00)

WADE: After reading The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss, I began to do some research on him and ran across the podcast called Entrepreneur On Fire. It’s a seven day a week podcast that focuses on business owners and entrepreneurs. I fell in love with it real quick and started branching out and looking for other podcasts from there.

What sparked the idea of The Entrepreneurs Library? (38:06)

WADE: I was looking for a way to diversify from some of the other companies we own. I was always looking for my next great book but finding those is not always easy. I was using Amazon, Google, and trying to find a good, quick, clear, and credible way. I realized there was no podcast that helped people find their next great read and it was then that I knew I had to do something about it.

What separates other book review sites from The EL podcast? (43:00)

WADE: I think some of the biggest things are credibility, deeper dive, short and straight to the point.

What’s the “Why” behind The Entrepreneurs Library? (45:23)

WADE: The primary reason is to help entrepreneurs find that next great book that will change their lives. I want to help people find that next nugget that’s going to help them move forward. I also want to help the authors sell their book and I believe this is a great place for that.

What’s next for The Entrepreneurs Library? (48:30)

WADE: There are a couple things but the biggest is video. We are always looking at how to best serve the market and everyone likes different things. I have never been a massive blog reader but some of our audience is. What we are trying to do is really be able to capitalize on the different markets of helping entrepreneurs find great content. One of those things is we are launching a video podcast and more than anything it’s there to cover rapid reviews.

If you could write the perfect book for entrepreneurs, what would you title it? (51:00)

WADE: The End Game.

What is the one thing that you’ve implemented personally in your life that was an absolute game changer that you believe would add a lot of value to others? (51:36)

WADE: I call it Time Lining. I do this with my goals and use up a very long marker white board and draw out the next two years of my life. On that board I layout my goals, trips, action items, business idea, etc. From there my timeline gets even more specific as I break it down into months, weeks, and days.

Do you have a morning routine? (56:15)

WADE: After interviewing Hal Elrod on his book The Miracle Morning, I started waking up earlier, drinking plenty of water, and stretching. Then I wanted to take it a step further so now I wake up at 5am and the first hour is for me and the second hour is for my wife.

What is one habit you wish you had? (1:00:07)

WADE: Something I need to change and will change is that I need to eat slower.

If you could go back and redo anything in your entrepreneurial life, what would you change? (1:02:20)

WADE: The first thing would be the way we hired. We were really good at implementing systems and processes into the sales process but we didn’t include systems and processes into interviewing, hire, and firing.

What is the best advice you’ve ever taken from a book? (1:03:25)

WADE: I think the best advice from a book or point blank would be appreciation. Those that appreciate seem to live an unbelievably more fruitful life than those that don’t. And to go along with it, it would be time. Time is worth more than money.

If you were stranded on an island with only one book what would it be? (1:04:50)

WADE: Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.

A summary of things you should know about The Little Book of Clarity according to Jamie Smart:

Introduction

In this episode Jamie Smart reveals all his insights on The Little Book of Clarity where he provides you with a quick guide to focus and declutter your mind.

In his book Smart expands on his original book Clarity and provides you with new, powerful ways to improve your productivity, eliminate stress, and master the art of innate thinking. The goal of the book is to help you create more relationships, meet personal goals, pinpoint negative goals, and train your brain to start prioritizing your day-to-day life more clearly.

This book is perfect for entrepreneurs who are constantly bombarded with an extensive to-do list and need an effective manual that will clear their head in order to get things done efficiently.

The Book’s Unique Quality (3:18)

You’ll find that almost all other books about productivity and clearing your mind is going to give you a whole bunch of things to do, things to practice, and things to remember. It didn’t make sense to me how you could help someone to have a clear mind by giving them more things to think about and do. My book doesn’t give you anything to do, anything to remember, or anything to practice and as you start to understand how it all works then it starts to implement automatically. All you need to do is read the book and it’ll do the work for you.

The Best Way To Engage (4:25)

It really is one to be read in sequence and in fact one of the earliest chapters tells you about a way of reading in which I call reading for insight.

The Reader’s Takeaway (14:36)

A simple misunderstanding about how the mind works is the cause of pretty much all the struggles that you face in your life and all the struggles we face in society. When you clear up that misunderstanding your life is going to instantly improve.

A Deep Dive Into The Book (5:36)

The introduction is setting the scene and you’ll find it talking about things that you can relate to and it’ll be setting a different direction for it. You’ll also find that at the end of every chapter there is a QR code that you can scan with your smartphone and it’ll take you to videos that explain the chapters in more depth. I wanted to make this a book that you can use in an interactive way.

The first chapter is called Misunderstanding; the hidden trap and it kind of sets the perspective. The principles behind clarity are to our psychology what the discovery of germs was to medicine.

The second chapter is called The Power of Insight and that’s about how when you read the book you are going to read it for something that comes from inside of you. That may sound strange but the nice thing about it is that there is nothing you need to practice or remember.

Chapter three is a technical chapter called How Perception is Created and it’s just explaining how your senses and mind works. We talk about tricks of the mind because so many things we struggle with as entrepreneurs really are just tricks of the mind.

Chapter four is talking about The Power of Principles and that’s about the principles that run our minds and emotional systems. When you understand these principles it makes everything a lot easier. The other thing you’ll find in this chapter is what I call the clarity equation which is clarity equals capacity minus contamination. The idea of that is we all have the capacity for the good stuff but what gets in the way of it is what I call contaminated thinking. The other thing you are going to find in that chapter is what I call the deep drivers and they are eight powerful values that every single one of us has that help us create the things we want to create.

Chapter five is the Psychological Immune System. You know how you got a physical immune system? Well you’ve also got a psychological immune system. Just like your physical immune system is there to take care of your body, your psychological immune system is there to take care of your psychology.

Chapter seven is called Stress; the source and the solution.

In chapter eight you are going to discover what I call the ultimate leverage point. As an entrepreneur one of the most powerful things you can get is leverage so this chapter is about the ultimate leverage point.

In the next eight chapters you will dive into each of those deep drivers in depth.

Chapter seventeen is called There’s Only One Problem and that’s the one thing that gets in the way of that stuff.

In chapter eighteen I introduce you to what I call penicillin for the mind. Just like penicillin goes wherever it’s needed in your body to care infection, this penicillin for the mind goes everywhere in your psychology to give you what you need.
Chapter twenty is The Leadership Delusion.

NOTE: That was just a summary. To get the full deep dive, play the audio clip at 05:36

Notable Quotes From The Book (15:35)

“How secure can a person ever feel when they believe that their security comes from something outside of them?” – Jamie Smart

The Credibility/Inspiration Of The Author (0:35)

I’m an entrepreneur and my fascination is with how people think, how people motivate themselves, and how people get results. Very specifically what I’ve find is how the mind works is a huge area of fascination and I’ve been exploring that for years.

When I found myself having all the trappings of success but none of the feelings of success I went back to the drawing board and found that there was a fundamental misunderstanding behind how I thought life worked. As I cleared up that misunderstanding for myself and started clearing it up for my clients not only did I become more productive, more clear minded, more comfortable in my own skin, I also became more successful. It turns out we are designed for reality and do really well in it but we don’t do so well when we are caught up in our muddle thinking.
